Peace Out 2020

I really shouldn’t have said so many bad things about 2019. 2020 was just cackling in the background.

However, instead of digging into the dumpster fire that it was, lets talk about something else.
So, yes, last year went according to no plan but there were some things that didn’t suck.

I ran 2 IRL races. One local 8 miler in January with no medals or bibs or shirts so I kind of feel like I have nothing to show for it. Oh wait- a blog post here!

I ran half marathon #40 on March 1 in Napa. Yeah, not what I had hoped for half #40 but maybe indicative of the shi**storm that was coming. If you missed the sh*tshow- here’s a post!

Then the world went, well you know and my motivation took a huge nosedive. My first canceled race was in mid- March and it went downhill from there.

But moving on.

Work went cuckoo in April and then I received news that I was transferring offices in May. 3 times the size of my current one, so I guess I’m doing something right? I feel like I hit the ground running and haven’t stopped since.

Most of my canceled races transitioned to virtual, very few deferred or postponed. I also signed up for a few virtual challenges. However it took months for any semblance of motivation to come back. I’m still not sure it’s back but I am getting there. Maybe. That’s another post.

So…. yearly mileage. Yeah. I saw a number I haven’t seen since the first year or 2 when I was running. I ran 327 miles in 2020. Yay??

No, it’s not great but it is better than it could have been. When I say I was lazy outside of work- I was lazy. I am only now beginning to realize my stress level and my coping are not where they should be.

For a year with no miles, I may have the biggest medal haul yet-

Not sure how I feel about that. And some are not in this picture as I don’t feel I earned them. Something for 2021 right??

Oh- I did escape to the Grand Canyon and Sedona in the fall. First time as an adult and now I can’t wait to get back there.

Also, I have either optimistically or naively signed up for real race in 2021. Fingers crossed!

26- Fade

Remember when we thought 2020 was going to be so awesome?

I take it all back.

My poor little town needs a break. Fire is a common occurrence out here, very common but I wasn’t ready for fire to come roaring out of the riverbed into the surrounding neighborhoods. And this a week after the southern part of the county had the largest fire we’ve seen in years. All homes were saved in the southern fire, not the same can be said for our small town. There was another midsize fire over the weekend too. Which again is sadly normal.

And for the love of Pete, stop it with the fireworks!

Ok, running…

Monday was lost to fire, and Tuesday was pretty smokey too.

Just cuz she’s cute..

Wednesday turned into a tilt-o-whirl. Is that what those things are called? The day started out normal but turned south just before lunch. The world started spinning and it didn’t want to stop. I ended up leaving work early which is something that does not come easily to me. I then slept the day away.

The tilt-o-whirl then left me fuzzy for a few days. At least I know it was migraine related but that does make 2 world spinning trips in the last 5 months and that is not normal.

My weekend was spent mostly napping but I did drag myself out for a sluggish 5K on Sunday. My heart rate throughout those short miles let me know I was still a little rough. And a lot out of shape. So it makes total sense that I just signed up for a mileage challenge right?

Ha!

How was your week?

Rear View- 2019

2019 was not what I would have expected. Nor was it what I hoped for at the beginning of the year. It is what it is, however it’s up to me to how I respond to it.

So what happened in 2019?

shiny

  • Ran 8 races
  • Met some great running peeps in real life
  • Promotion at work
  • Transfer to a much close location
  • Finally made it to California Adventure
  • I ran.

dull-

  • DNS’ed 2 races- Castle to Coast in January, RnR San Jose in October
  • Spent January through March sick
  • Both parents in and out of hospital
  • Gained 20ish pounds (on top pf the 20 I gained in 2018)
  • Beachbody
  • Fewer miles than previous 3 years
  • No 1st 50K- my only real goal of the year
  • Not enough trail time
  • Nowhere near 1000 miles- yes, an arbitrary goal- actual total- 591

2018 was kind of a mess- I didn’t even write a year review, my usual Shiny and Dull. I had high hopes for 2019 but I also never even published my goals post. It’s still in my drafts folder even now.

2019, I aimed for something higher. But I didn’t really try. I don’t even know if I can say I phoned it in. Admitting it is only half a start. I need to make a change if I want 2020 to be different. Even if typing 2020 just broke my brain a bit. This is no new year, new me bit- merely me admitting that I’ve become a little comfortable being lazy. So comfortable, it’s going to be very hard to follow through. And hard. Some of the weight gain is on me (literally, ha!) and some is due to my lovely GI disorder but the docs are stumped, yay me. However I have become a little too comfortable using that as an excuse. The Slacker will find a way, haha.

So now I need to unlearn all my bad habits (ok, most of them) and stop rationalizing everything I do or eat to increase my Slacker-ness. It’s going to be an uphill battle and likely a long climb.

So here’s to a lackluster 2019 and lessons hopefully learned.

Ok, 2020, what you got?
