Week 45- Dark

Daylight savings never used to bother me. This year I feel like it smacked me in the face.

Which is odd because I thought it would be better now that I work so much closer to home. Doesn’t make a difference, I still don’t get off work until it’s full dark. Boo. Someone want to come run with me?

On the work front, things are looking up and we should hopefully be fully staffed in a couple of weeks. Fingers crossed, I think I can, I think I can.

I watched more Christmas movies this weekend. I am trying to wait until Thanksgiving but I am losing the battle. This is one way the stupid 80* weather is helping.

I also slept. A lot. I really mean a lot. I took the weekend to reset after a rough few weeks… well, truthfully I didn’t plan but that’s what my body dictated. Surprisingly no naps were involved.

Monday- Wednesday- Dark
I packed clothes to run after work but I kept putting it off. I told myself I hadn’t had time to test my lights since spring. I even went so far as to order new ones. I mean extra light never hurts, right?

Can you see me now?

Thursday- 1.6 miles
The plan was to run and then meet my mom for dinner. What I didn’t account for was traffic on the freeway being at a standstill. One fender bender had turned into 4 and they backed up both sides of the freeway. Thankfully it looked like everyone in the accidents were just irritated. I made it to my running spot but I only had 20 minutes. So I ran. Slower like I do in the dark… maybe I should use winter as a way to work on my heart rate?

Friday- Nope
Another open to close.

Saturday- 4 miles
It’s freezing overnight and 85 in the day. Should I be melting on runs in November? No! I rode the struggle bus the whole time. I know it won’t be long until I am complaining about the cold but right now, it’s welcome.

Sunday- 4 miles
I was so tired. I woke with a headache so went back to sleep. Even with that, by afternoon, I had zero desire to run. Hell, I didn’t even want to move. I wanted to nap. I forced myself to get up and drive to my running spot. Less than a mile in, I knew running was not going to happen. I could have thrown in the towel and quit but instead I walked. 4 miles and I even managed to negative split the thing. Better than nothing!

9.6 miles for the week. Not too surprising considering it was the first week of Daylight savings and it usually takes me awhile to rip off that bandaid. Missing a long run is what really killed the mileage. But let’s be real….when was my last long run??

How was your week?

Week 36- Chaperone

To all those with kids or those who teach teenagers, I don’t know how you do it.

I felt broken after 2 days, ha!

However prior to that, I had a decent week. Well, except for the sudden bout of insomnia. How did I used to survive on so little sleep???

Also tried to change up my typical pic🤣

Monday- 3ish miles
I had not slept at all the night before. I had hoped to get my long run of the week out of the way but had zero energy. I ended up heading out for a few miles in the heat of the afternoon and it was rough. Partly due to the heat and partly due to the 2 days of no sleep.

Tuesday- MM100
Another night of no sleep. Yay. I headed home and just did a low key home workout.

Wednesday- 5 miles
Still no sleep. I thought about not running but I decided to just head out and see what happened. I wasn’t expecting much, especially when I realized I had no idea where my headphones or new sunglasses were. I just wanted to turn my brain off and tire myself out. Mission slightly accomplished.

Thursday- 4.5 miles
After a slightly better night of sleep, I briefly considered trying for my long run of 7-8 miles after work since the weekend was going to be busy. My body quickly let me know that was not happening. So instead I settled for 4.5 miles with a little push in the middle.

Don’t all high schools have massive diving platforms😮

Friday/ Saturday- California Classic Tennis Tournament
And the chaos started. Once again, I was chaperoning and driving for my mother’s tennis team. We left town around 5:30 on Friday morning and didn’t return until late Saturday. 3 matches on Friday and 2 on Saturday. I was fried and exhausted. I wasn’t even playing! At least the Expedition I was driving was better than last years Tahoe.

Sunday- Rest
I had planned for an afternoon run but everything caught up to me and I napped for 2 hours. Ha! I did feel mostly human after that though.

12.5 miles for the week. Considering I was running on fumes all week, I have no complaints.

How was your week?

Rambling On – 59

Happy Friday!!

I love Fridays but this one is a doozy. As this goes live, I will be driving hours away with a car full of teenage girls. Send help. And caffeine. Please.

I’ve dealing with a bout of insomnia this week. It’s been a bit rough. It used to be the norm for me actually but the past few years have been better. And my migraine meds put me right to sleep at night now. Just not this week. I can’t brain anymore.

According to the news, this has been the coolest summer in years. Yeah, what? I know I am gettign older but I’m sorry 106 is not handable anymore. And yes, I realize this is coming from the person who said 3 miles in 100* last week wasn’t bad. Where is fall?

Then again, I want the fall temps and not the early darkness. So picky!

I need something new to watch. I finished Teen Wolf and now I feel lost. I’ve too many Hallmark movies and Ridiculousness lately. Any suggestions?

I may have taken advantage of some of the Labor Day deals on running gear. Or maybe they took advantage of me? But new gear is fun, right?

What are you up to this weekend?

Week 35- Way Back

How is it September?? Seriously?

The 106* temps aren’t helping me adjust. On one hand, I am anxuiusoly awaiting Fall temps but I am not looking forward to it getting dark sooner. Also, I am not looking forward to the Pumpkin Spice- everywhere. Sorry but it’s true.

Last week was both good in ways and rough in ways. Running was better but I find myself in a funk I am having trouble swinging my way out of. People’s new penchant for making fun of my name isn’t helping.

I also had an appointment with my gastro last week. Which was good because I received a med change as well an appointment for an endoscopy. He also finally addressed the elephant in the room that is my weight. Do we have a direction to go? Not really but the fact that I’ve put on 40+ pounds in a not long period of time is finally ringing someone else’s bell than just mine.

I am still running plan- less as I prepare for all my October races. Which I was fine with because I somehow convinced myself I had plenty of time. Only to have the realization last week that I actually only have 5 weeks until my next half. What?!?

40 minutes of slogging and we drop 3 degrees

Monday- 3.1 miles
I was a little concerned how this was going to feel after essentially 2 weeks off but it felt pretty ok. Granted, I backed off on pace a lot as it was still 100 degrees by the time I ran and this idiot packed pants. Really?

Tuesday- 3.6 ish miles
I had new shorts to try out from Athleta and I was hoping they would be a good fit as they were cute. I was also feeling like running so I set out for my 5 mile route. Instead around 2.5 miles in, I was trying to map a shortcut in my head. The shorts and I were not getting along. I even tried Vaseline lip gloss as a substitute body glide but I feel like it just made things worse. The last mile was probably more bowlegged hobble than a run.

Wednesday- Recovery
The wounds of Tuesday needed time to recover. Plus this was my doctor’s appointment day.

Thursday- 3.1 miles
This was a kind of stressful day and I just wanted to turn my brain off. I went back to basics and ran the route I ran back when I was first starting out years ago. I just wanted to turn off my brain and run. And I maybe should have carried water- 95 felt hotter than I thought it would.

Friday- Nada
The beauty of no training plan is that I no longer have to lie to myself about running on a Friday. I don’t even attempt to plan it anymore.

Saturday- oops
I set an alarm to run but then didn’t get up. I also didn’t make it out in the afternoon as even I’m not stupid enough to run in 106*.

Sunday- 2.94 miles
See above and repeat. I did drag myself out after dinner for a few miles but as it was literally 10 minutes after eating, this was a walk. But something is better than nothing right?

12.9 sluggish miles for the week. Still an improvement on the previous 2 weeks. Small victories, right?

How was your week?

Week 31- Listen

Last week was… yeah.

I don’t know if it was cumulative fatigue with it being week 15 of my training plan or if I was fighting something. I was so damn tired all week- it was a struggle to get up in the morning, every morning. I was coughing more and every thing felt hard. To the point where when I found out I had been in close contact with someone with pneumonia, I thought “oh, that would make so much sense”.

I also took more than a few liberties with my training plan. Ok, a lot. But it wasn’t all bad- I took a great nap on Saturday. I went and saw Hobbs and Shaw– loved it. I did some shopping- possibly too much. I added 2 new beauties to the family too-

Oh and I started a new workout program- Morning Meltdown 100. Cuz’ that makes total sense 2 weeks before a half marathon, right? Oh and mine is more like evening meltdown.

Plan vs Reality

Monday- 1.5 miles/ 1 mile- MM100 1- 1/2 mile dog walk
I was moving really slow for some reason and I learned that my new running shorts did not agree with me, ha! I bailed after a mile. Instead of being lazy though, I started the new Morning Meltdown 100. Yeah- not in the morning. Then I grabbed the pup and headed out for a short walk.

Tuesday- 6 miles @ HMGP/ 5 miles trying not freak out
And once again, I have a panic attack during the run. What the what?? This is getting annoying. So instead of trying to nail the pace and make it worse or bailing on the run- I slowed down and made it a game instead. I changed my watch face to heart rate only and just tried to keep it under 165. I didn’t care about any other metrics, just tried to go slow and easy- walking if need be. I did one big loop back to my car. So not a total loss.

Wednesday- 1.5 miles/ ?????? MM 100 2
I ended up getting off early since I worked last Saturday. Normally I would have said no but this was one of my most tired days so I went with it. I made an appointment to finally get my tires rotated and my car washed. While I was waiting for my car, I headed over to TJ Max for some browsing time. Apparently I bumped my watch at some point and it turned on. I realized when it buzzed at the mile mark. Can I count that as a workout?

Thursday- 1.5 up/down, 5x 800 repeats/ 3 miles MM 100 3
Yeah, I didn’t even try the repeats. I just played the heart rate game again. It kept my mind distracted and wow, I have to run slow to stay under 165.

Friday- 1.5 easy/ nope
I worked in 2 locations so I didn’t even bother packing a bag of running gear.

Saturday- 7 miles/ 2 hour nap
Another one of those so stinkin’ tired days. In fact I was so tired, I decided my long run wasn’t happening. At all. Over both weekend days. At this point, the missed run isn’t going to hurt me at Oakland next week but pushing things might.

Sunday- Rest/ shopping and .5 mile puppy walk, MM 100 6
Shopping counts as cardio right?

10ish miles for the week. Not great but could have been much worse. I don’t regret missing my long run. For once my common sense out weighed the guilt of missing the run completely.

How was your week?
