While my fueling game is stronger than it ever was (Thanks Gatorade Endurance), my actual endurance is up for debate.
I had big plans for getting back on track post October chaos, but I swear the universe laughed and said hold my beer. November was more of the same plus some extra crazy which saw me changing my running MO. Actually still a work in progress, my week day running has been completely derailed. The farthest I’ve run in 2 months is 10k. And it wasn’t a walk in the park.
We finally said goodbye to lingering summer warmth and rain came for the first time since April. And hasn’t stopped. Don’t get me wrong, we need the rain as we are in a constant state of drought, but too much too fast brings along a new set of chaos.
Saturday is currently showing an 80% chance of rain.
25K is 15ish miles. 2ish giant climbs. The first one the hardest and the shale rock is tough on a good day… what will it be when wet?
That’s more than double the longest I’ve run in months. In less than optimal circumstances.
There is a 13K I could drop to but my pride stings at that. I set a half cocked goal for a 50K this year and if I dropped I wouldn’t even be completing half of that goal. But would pushing myself to finish the 25K just hurt my odds of training for a 50K in the first half of 2020? And training healthy at that??? The greatest fuel (did I mention I love it?) in the world won’t help me if I hurt myself.
So, decision time. Smart or stupid? How may Blackberry gels should I pack?

Then I spent the first few months of the year more sick than not and things got put on the back burner. Well, the race dropping my distance and changing locations and dates didn’t help either but that’s another story.
Then I circled back around. Why not? Let’s do this.
And that is a 50K.
Some of you are possibly saying hell yeah! While others are saying, yeah no, you just need to stop.
Don’t get me wrong- I am not aiming to run this thing tomorrow, or even next month. I realize this is going to take some time. I need time on my feet, miles under my belt, mountains to climb.
I also need to practice my fueling. Because well, I don’t. I may have been able to skate through 2 marathons that way but that won’t work if my aim is for dirty trails and steep climbs.
I will have time to practice my fueling over the next few months. As I have more than a few races planned that I’ve not yet mentioned.😆
At this point I am tossing around 50k races happening early 2020. Typing that year was kind of scary. Makes the race seem less frightening, ha! However that means I have a few months to get my act together. Which is good as some my options are BEASTS.
The calendar tells me that fall officially starts this weekend but I think it lies. We may not be hitting 100* days at the moment but it is still hot out there.
Yet the heat didn’t make me any less lazier. If I was given the option to run in the morning when it was a little cooler or in the afternoon when I would melt, I usually chose the stupider option. That said, I made it through a summer of stupid, hot running with no hydration issues and no headaches due to running in the heat.
I give credit to my watermelon Gatorade Endurance Formula and Endurance Energy Gels. It’s been a few months, I’m calling it a committed relationship. I am still in love. I don’t know how I ran without it. I now have a tub of the Endurance Formula powder at home and one at work. I tried a little travel size tupperware thing for a while but that just didn’t work for me. Then for awhile I was just carrying the one back and forth. 🤦♀️ No worries, just get another canister!
Now- you may be thinking- do you really need an Endurance Formula for a 4 mile run? When it’s 90+ outside, yes I do! I also dilute it- so a little less powder in the scoop and a little more water.👍
I admit that long run fueling is still a work in progress. I am getting better at it- the ease at which the Mango Gels go down helps- but I seriously need to a set a reminder for myself. ⏲ Every run where I actually fuel usually ends on a better note than when I don’t but I struggle with the actual remembering to do it.
I’ve also actually branched out to trying actual mango things which I never had before. I always assumed I disliked mangoes. But now I can’t remember why. So, thanks for broadening my horizons Gatorade!
