Runaway Chicken

With daylight savings fast approaching and being one of the few runners who does not look forward to it, I have tried to get as many miles in after work as possible.   This can mean shorter than normal runs but I would rather run that than the treadmill sooner.

Tuesday I headed to the lake path on the chance that it was open like last week.   Unlike last week, the signs were out. Waah.  I stood for a few minutes and pondered.   Then I became a lemming and followed the 20 people ignoring the signs.  So bad I know but it was my last time at the path until spring.  I only managed 2.5 miles before I thought it would be too dark to complete another lap.    The path only has two lights- both near the playground.

I was stretching out on the fitness bars when I saw a Chihuahua looking dog coming down the street.  I waited a moment and didn’t see any owners.    This corner of the path can be pretty busy car-wise so I decide to see if I could figure out where the dog lives.  He was having none of that.   His barking made me laugh.  He didn’t sound mean, more like a petulant teenager.  “Leave me alone, mind your own business, what are you looking at”.   While I am trying to decide if I want to force it, I hear a rustling in the bushed across the street.   I looked up to see a chicken walking away from a house and going towards the street.  It’s making a jail break!

So now I don’t know if I should chase the dog or the chicken!  Or do I leave them both and just go back to my car?    A group of people was coming my way and a nice older man told me that the dog wanders on its own all the time.   He also agreed that it wasn’t the friendliest.   So I asked him about the chicken.   While we were chatting the chicken came back down around the house.  It walked to a gate in the fence and tried to squeeze in.  Then it tried to climb the bush running along the fence.  It wasn’t escaping, it was locked out!  Once again, it followed the path around the fence, I think there must have been another gate back there.  The man tried to open the gate but couldn’t get it open.    I was beginning to feel bad for the chicken, all it wanted to do was go home.  It knew exactly what door to go to but couldn’t open it.  So the nice man and I went door knockin’.    We found someone who lived in the same house but didn’t own the chickens.  He called the owner before heading out to try to catch it.

Apparently the chickens roam during the day before going back inside the fence.  I run this path 2x a week and have never seen or heard the chickens before.  Plus it’s a residential area.   After handling that, the man and I parted ways.  So I probably could have finished another lap but I wouldn’t have had the runaway chicken experience.  🙂  Last evening at the path completed.  10-29skyI work this Saturday, so I was able to get off a little early on Wednesday.  I headed back to town hoping for at least 6 miles but dreaming of more. Ha!  I completed 6 but it was so damn hard.  Nothing hurt, I just had zero energy.   It was also 87º… on October 29.  Ugh, where is fall.   I hit 4 stop lights between mile 2.5 to 3.5.   Then my stomach informed me that 4 miles would have been a better idea at mile 3.75.  I was 2 miles from my car.   There was a bench just past mile 4 and I took a break.  I think I sat for about 10 minutes before finally heading off to finish my run.  6 miles done and I managed to keep my overall average pace at 11:45.  Considering how I felt though, I will call that a win!

What was not a win was the bloody toe I found when taking off my socks.  Boo.

Did you know chickens were so good with direction?  I had no idea.

Simple Saturday

I have probably mentioned a lot that I have been super tired lately.  I even took an unplanned nap after Run or Dye last weekend.  It seems like all I do lately is go to the doctor.  So there has been a little change in plans.   I had planned on running my third half of the year on May 31st but have decided that it would probably be smarter to step back to the 10K.    Especially considering that I have 2 papers due in the next two weeks and should really spend some time on those.   See, I am a Slacker!  I feel bummed missing the half but I decided to use the time to work on training better and to work on my form.   I am signed up for a half in July that I am super excited for.  NikeC is going to run it too!  Woo hoo for race buddies!

The half in July is part of the same event that I ran a 10K in last July.  In fact Rock to the Pier was my first race recap on this blog, awww, nostalgia.    They also have a Rock’n Around the Pier half and that is what I am running this year.  90% of the race is on the beach and I can’t wait.   This year also has a little added excitement to it.  Due to the tides, the race starts at 6:30 but high tide is expected to start rolling in before 8:30ish.  So, the website warns that the half marathoners will get wet and may have to navigate some rocks at some point.  It also states that if runners don’t hit the turnaround point (10K) by the 1:20:00 mark, they will be bussed back to the finish line.  Yikes!   I’m still looking forward to it though. 🙂

Friday was a usual scheduled rest day, and unfortunately the cookies were victorious.  Seriously, no will power.  Did I mention they are from a french bakery?    However it has been a week since I had candy.   The only time I have a problem with candy is the beginning of the year.  My favorite candy is SweetTarts and I especially love the small ones.  For Valentines day and Easter they make special bags of hearts and bunnies.  It’s a problem every year.  I only eat the red, orange and purple so I usually delude myself until thinking its ok.   It’s not.   Thankfully, Easter candy is all gone and I’m not really a chocolate person so I am in the clear until next year.  🙂  Maybe by then I will have the strength to resist.

Today was a work day for me so no sleeping in for me.   The drive was pretty, no fog in sight  and I kind of wished I had a real camera.   I passed classic cars going east for a car show and hordes of bikers going north for the Criterium.  Plus Saturday work town was gearing up for the AMGEN tour next week.  Everyone had a bike, I’m jealous!  I have been looking into borrowing one but no luck yet.  That’s ok, I still have time.   Once off work, I headed home.

The weather was mid 70’s and breezy, so I headed out for an early afternoon run.  I read a quote on Twitter the other day and for some reason it was a light bulb moment. I can’t remember who tweeted, I can’t even remember who originally said it (but it was some famous runner) or even the exact wording- blogger fail!    But it said something like this-“if you don’t take your easy runs easy enough, it will make your hard runs easy”.  Or in my case- races.  Easy means eeeasssy; which I already knew but sometimes reading it from someone more talented helps. 5-10

I am still working on my form so today was going to be an easy day.  I determined that I had to warm up before trying to focus on my legs.   I tried to do it from the beginning and just felt like I was running with a limp.   So I went back to the old way with a short walk for a warm up.   Once I felt warmed up, I went back to working on actively using my right leg.   It’s harder than it sounds. 😦  I felt like there was an army drill sergeant in my head- right, right, right.   I’m not even sure I am doing anything, other than I am sore in new ways.   And oddly enough, the first 3 miles were a bit faster than I thought.  Focusing on my legs meant I focused less on pace and somehow that made it seem easier?  At least until mile 4, I hit that last hill and felt tired for the first time, I walked a bit.    I finished 4.5 miles and stretched.  I was a little hot but nothing a little water couldn’t fix.

After that I took Zoey for a walk.  I haven’t taken her for a puppy jog in a while.  She didn’t bark at any cars, well except for a Directv van, guess she was mad at them for some reason.   🙂  She was feeling pretty lazy though, she kept lying down on the first mile.  She’d trot along and then just plop down on the ground.   After we turned around, I took her to the school so she could play in the grass.   She was very excited and wanted off the leash but that wasn’t happening.  Then we headed for home.  She was a very good puppy.  🙂

All in all, it was a pretty good Saturday!  Now I really should do some research.

Sometimes You Listen

Sometimes You Listen

In my March Recap, I likened March to a truck that had run me over.  Well, April is a freight train barreling through.   I have been trying to stay upbeat, particularly when I post but I am not sure if it worked.  🙂

Work has been crazy busy since the beginning of March and it’s likely to stay that way through late August.   I did not think it would affect me as much as it has.   But I am tired, so very, very tired.  But again, I tried not to say much because, 1- who wants to read a Debby Downer all the time, and 2- my boss reads this blog.  (Hi awesome boss!)  I think with work being crazy and then trying to stay trained for 3 half marathons (plus 5k’s) in 3 months may have been a little more than this Slacker was ready for.   I still love my job, I’m just a little worn out and somehow when I was planning my race schedule, I wasn’t paying a lot of attention.  My next few weeks look like this-

April 19– Firehouse 5K -may be a 5K but there’s a 500 ft elevation in    less than 1/2 a mile
April 25-27SLO Marathon weekend- half
May 3– Run or Dye
May 10– work

My last post mentioned an irksome migraine, and it hasn’t really left.  This is not horribly unusual; I average a lingering one around once a year. 😦     Between that and being overly tired, I got a little emotional driving home on Friday.   There may have been some loud, off-key singing involved as well.  🙂  Maybe a little Let It Go.

Saturday was a work day and I was trying to psych myself up for the 10 mile run that I needed to do.     Meanwhile, both of my co-workers were lecturing me that I needed to take of myself.  After work, I headed home for the usual lunch and errands.  It was while I was in Target with my mother that I had to face facts.   I jokingly mentioned that a nap sounded like a great idea.  She looked at me, paused and then said that it was a good idea.   Ummm, what?

My mother is not the type to suggest that.   Growing up, one of the things we argued about most was my inherent laziness.    If there are hours in the day then there are hours you could and should be doing something.   The name of my blog came from her; one day I said I didn’t feel like running, she called me a slacker.  So for her to say I needed a nap meant I must look like a train wreck.  Ha!

Even then I still thought about trying to get in my run.  I was telling myself I could start with 5 miles and see how it went.  Finally common sense prevailed and my planned *2 hours of running turned into 2 hours of napping.

I was still feeling a little rough today, so I took it easy again.  That’s not to say it wasn’t a good day.  I headed down to SLO for some more hardwood shopping with my mom, seriously, how long does it take to make a choice?  The choice was finally made, so now I just get to look forward to helping her rip out the carpeting in the near future.  My brother gets to install the hardwood.  🙂   So that’s coming up in a few weeks too.

I ate some yummy food, didn’t buy too much and finally managed to get this shot-freemontThis is the local landmark that inspired this years medals for the SLO Marathon and 1/2.    I can’t wait to earn this crossing the finish line.  🙂

Tomorrow, depending on how I feel, I will get back to running.   If I am still tired, I may rest another day.   I would rather feel rested and slightly under trained for the half than exhausted and sore.    Work is likely to be just as busy in the coming weeks, we will down a person, so I am thinking of dropping my training back to 3 days a week.  I need to think on it a little more though.
