I am at the point of fitness where sometimes a rest day is smarter than pushing it before a race. But that also makes it way too easy to remain a Slacker.
Last week wasn’t horrible and I did get out for 2 days of runs. They weren’t bad either. Both were short but both were decent. Slower than crap but decent. The only downside was the humidity during Saturday’s run. What was that all about??? We don’t do humidity here! 100 degrees, sure but humidity, no. Yuck.
Then I rationalized that a long run on Sunday wouldn’t help me for the race but could possibly hurt it. I was feeling an odd ache in my left leg and was freaky tired. Nap time!
I still had a shoe dilemma though. The farther I had run in the Torin’s was 6 ish miles and that makes me nervous for Santa Rosa. So I figured I would try a short in the Wave Riders even though Idaho made me want to burn them. Nope, no change. In fact, I took my shoes off and finished my run barefoot. Well, let’s be real- I was walking. Only crazy people run barefoot on concrete. Or people with stronger feet than me.
Then the week ran away from me and now Santa Rosa race weekend is here. What????
Don’t get me wrong, I am looking forward to it but I have some concerns. First is obviously my fitness level, well lack there of. Next is smoke. It’s hard to find somewhere in Ca that isn’t affected by smoke at the moment. Worse is the fires causing the smoke.

Holy crap people, it’s Vegas weekend!!
How did that happen?
My bags are packed, I’ve purchased my monorail pass, my race confirmations have been printed- twice, once for each bag- I’ve checked into my flight, I’ve charged all my devices.
What have I forgotten?😛 How did I pack wrong?
I am heading into my first double digit double race weekend- while I’ve run 2 races the same weekend before, once I ran 3, but I’ve never crossed the 10 mile mark when combining those races. This weekend I will run 16.2 miles along the Las Vegas Strip. And I recently discovered that the Strip is not flat. Not sure why I thought it was.😛 Oh well, I don’t like flat anyways.
This will also be my first time in Las Vegas so this will probably be very much “small town girl lost in the bright lights” situation. Whatever am I going to do with myself? Luckily Kate is coming in on Saturday. Yay!!! Follow along on Instagram as we run 13.1 miles of lights and sounds and Kate runs her first half marathon!
I am also having a shoe dilemma. I think my Ultra Boost are dead. But I’ve never run more than 5 miles in any other pair of shoes. Do I take 2 pairs of shoes? Can I fit two pairs of shoes? Even then that would leave me running the half in the Ultra Boost. My last 8 miles in them left me with screaming shins for 4 days. More on that in my weekly recap. Or lack there of. 😛 So do I wear old shoes that definitely hurt me or newer shoes that could hurt me?
I am looking forward to the expo. However I am hoping to not spend too much. Rock n Roll knows how to do an expo and I can be very easily tempted. Shiny new gear! Except I have to remember that I have to be able to pack it all and bring it all back. Bummer.
Plus I get to meet more BibRave peeps! Yay! And hopefully some blog buddies too!

It’s race weekend!
Man, that one came up fast! Well, actually, how is it August? 😛
It’s time to head on up to Salinas and meander my way through back roads enjoying the sites of crops, check another Mission off the list, and enjoy half marathon #27 in Steinbeck country.
My training has been ummm, a little absent this month. With work going through a conversion, I tried but my running took a hit. As did my sleeping.
So with that in mind, I have zero goals for this weekend other than to have a good time. I plan to just go out there and enjoy the views and the course. I know I will be slower than normal and that’s fine. More time to enjoy the course, right? I here there’s a great BBQ at the finish- I think I’ll finish just around the time a BBQ craving hits. 😛
I am hoping this odd heat wave with mugginess breaks though. The weather stalking has commenced and right now it’s looking like a warm morning. I will be drinking lots of water.
My next half is only 2 sleeps away! I am leaving for Ventura tomorrow morning. Half marathon #9 is on Sunday. 🙂
With my recent rough patch, I have readjusted my goals for this race. When I first signed up back in June I was hoping that the flat course would help with my goal of breaking 2:00 for a half marathon. While that would be amazing, I don’t feel I am in the position to do that right now. Frankly, I don’t think I should even try. So in an effort to be smart, I have a new goal this weekend- have fun. Plus this will be a race weekend of firsts-
First race I travel to
First race out of the county
First time sleeping in a hotel in I have no idea how long
First time eating dinner somewhere random pre race?
I am heading down tomorrow morning and dragging my mother along with me. We are planning on getting in some shopping at the mall before picking up my packet and checking into the hotel. I also don’t remember the last time I was in a mall. With those plans I will be breaking quite a few pre-race rules. Which helps the choice to just have fun. Now I would like to have fun and still be around 2:10 but it will all depend on how I feel. I ran that in SLO with hills, so fingers crossed.
I got off a few hours early today so I had plenty of time to pack. Packing is stressful! I am only going for 2 days/ 1 night and I feel like I am both packing too much and not enough. I have had my race outfit planned for a while but am still taking extra shorts and compression socks. Maybe I will change my mind? Who knows. I am looking forward to hitting the expo too. The race sounds like one giant beach party, so yay!
I also updated my playlist. I am in weird mood, so it is kind of all over the place. Some good stuff, some bad. 🙂 Headphones are discouraged but I am not at the point where I can run without music. The site recommends only running with one in and I already do that anyways. Plus I still like hearing Mr. Nike chime in with how I am doing. Yes, my Garmin buzzes but I like hearing it too. I tried to take a screenshot of it, but apparently I don’t know how to get the whole thing in one image, oops.
