Running Ahead

When 2013 started I had a few running goals that I mostly kept to myself.   I knew I had at least 2 half marathons in the year to come and by City to Sea in October I was hoping to break 2:15:00.  That would be 11 minutes off City to Sea of 2012, so I was a little nervous.  I also wanted to break 30:00 for a 5K again, just to make sure that the first time wasn’t a fluke just because it was the HOB fun run.   I figured it may have just been the adrenaline stemming from the literally almost 100 people I knew there, it’s a very popular local event.  Most races, I only know 1 or 2 other people, less stress. 🙂  In 2013, I wanted to get over the horrible mental block I had with 10K’s, I had only run 1 but I hated it so much, it was 2 years before I ran another.  Give me half marathon any day.   I was also aiming for 12 races through out the year.

2013 also began with a promotion and job location change.  I now commuted every day.  On top of that, work was insanely busy.  We were going through a merger, so most days including the commute were over 12 hour days.  I wasn’t getting home until after 7, and then I was so tired I usually just crashed.   This went on for a few months.  Running took a backseat and I became a weekend runner.   😦   My first 2 races of the year were in that time period as well.  A 5K in February and the Wine Country 1/2 in March.

Also the last time I had my natural hair color, ha!!
Also the last time I had my natural hair color, ha!!

I went into Wine Country feeling seriously under trained.  I had run this half twice before so I knew the course well.  I was hoping to finish near 2:25:00, so only a minute faster than 2012’s City to Sea.  Then 3 minutes to the starting gun they announced a last minute course change.   The out and back portion would be shorter to accommodate adding a crazy hill at the end, at mile 12.4.  Seriously?!   I figured I would run as much as I could and walk when I needed to.  I won’t lie, I walked that entire damn hill and some after that, cursing in my head the whole way up.  The shocker was that I crossed the finish line at 2:14:04.  Ummm, how now?   I still have no idea where that came from.   I had to double check Nike, the official time and the starting clock, I was in disbelief.  But then I was like, what now?  I wasn’t sure I could get faster.  So in June, I started Slacker Runner (thanks for joining me!), partially to hold myself accountable and to find motivation in all your stories as well (which are amazing, by the way).  And to stop driving my coworkers crazy with running talk.

In June, I also ran my first 10K in 2 years and it didn’t suck!!!  In fact, I ran another in July and loved it.   As for 12 races, I ran in 11 events but 12 races.  I am not sure how to count that.  🙂   And I finished City to Sea Half in 2:05:56.  I had discovered this great path at a park in the town halfway between home and work.   It helped with sticking to my training plan and I think that helped with my overall pace. I can’t wait to get back to it in the spring!

So now we are heading into 2014 and where do I go from here?  I am putting my goals in writing this year, so let’s do this!

5K- Finish under 27:00

10K- Finish under 54:00

Half marathon- Break under 2:00:00 in the first half of the year. If I do– see how close I can get to 1:50:00 by City to the Sea 2014. (yikes!)

money

So, in order to do that I need races!!!!  I am debating joining the 14 in 2014 (but more on that later). I generally plan my races only a quarter ahead and most of the time it also comes down to finances 😦   So for the beginning of the year, I am thinking-

Feb 1- Super Fun Run 5K
Feb 15- Buzz 1/2 Marathon
March 23- Wine Country 1/2 marathon ( dang hill!!!)
April 27- SLO 1/2 Marathon

So now I need to get moving, get running!!!  That first 1/2 marathon is less than 2 months away.  Which is making me regret finishing my Christmas shopping tonight instead of running, oops.

To everyone who has their race year mapped out, you seriously impress me.

Anyone have a goal race in the first half of the year?

Everyone ready for Christmas?

Turkey Trot and too much food

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope everyone had good food and a good time.

I don’t say it enough but I am truly thankful for my family and friends.   I don’t know where I would be without them.   They put up with a lot of my crap 🙂

When my alarm went off this morning, I admit to questioning my sanity in running a race on Thanksgiving.    Once I finally managed to drag myself out of bed, I was wishing that the race was a 5K and not a 10K.  I was feeling ill so eating prior to the race was not an option.  I got ready and then headed out to meet C and her husband.   It was going to be her first 10K 🙂

It was cold!
It was cold!

The race was small as was expected.  Could it have been better organized? Yes but they still did a good job.  Start and finish was in actually in a supermarket parking lot, which was hopping.   More people than I expected were out getting last minute items for Thanksgiving.   We started on time and we were off.   The race was an out and back along a back road.   It was primarily flat with a fairly decent downhill around mile 2.3 until the turn around.   Thing about that downhill?  It was uphill on the way back. Ugh.  But there have been way worse hills in other races, so I sucked it up and ran.  I passed C and her husband on the way back up.

Mile 4, my stomach cramped and it never really went away.  It made for an uncomfortable last 2 miles.  Heading back towards the parking lot, I could see my family on the corner.  It was a Thanksgiving miracle, my pops and brother were there with my mom as well.

The brother, did I mention the cold?
The brother, did I mention the cold?

I crossed the finish line at 56:21.   I felt like I was slower than that so woo hoo!   We were told our times at crossing and then had to report them to the registration table.   There were only 3 age groups- Amateur (high school), Open (18-35), and Master (35-up).   I was either 3rd in my age group or just 3rd to report in, not sure which.    I then waited to see C and her husband come across.  I think I will always try to get one these in our races (well until they become faster than me)-

Leaving him in the dust!

The rest of the day was spent with my family, possibly eating too much food.  But it was yummy.   We watched some TV (Independence Day- we were holiday confused) and played with the puppy.

Tomorrow is Christmas Tree day 🙂 I will avoid all stores as much as possible.  I plan to meet C and another friend for lunch and maybe hit the gym in the afternoon.  Hopefully neither of those places will be too crowded.  I really should do homework as well. Ha!

On the upside, today’s race pushed me 5 miles passed my Pile on the Miles challenge for November!!  I followed through with something!!!! And I have 2 days to spare.

I hope that everyone had a truly wonderful Thanksgiving!

Almost Turkey Time!!!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!!!!

Anyone racing tomorrow?  Have to rationalize the calories someway right?

A puppy is tiring and she isn’t even mine.    Just playing with her is exhausting.    She passed her first vet check with flying colors.  What is it about the vets office that makes all animals want to cuddle?  She didn’t even have a frame of reference, but she was not happy.   She also finally has a name.  Meet Zoey

Hi!!!
Hi!!!

Vacation brain has somewhat set in but I was able to get in a 5 mile run on Tuesday.   It started out really sluggish but all in all it was a pretty good run.  I never quite got up to speed but I felt good at the end.  This run also put me within 1.1 miles of my Pile on the Miles goal!  Woo hoo!   I may succeed at a challenge!

Tomorrow’s Turkey Trot will be the final push needed to meet my goal.   It should be a smaller race, there’s only race day registration available.  But it’s also fairly cheap and it benefits the local high school wrestling team as well as the food bank.  I am planning on meeting C and her husband there tomorrow morning.   It’s close, so I can pretty much roll out of bed and head over there.  (See- Slacker!!!!)  I would not say that I am super prepared for this so my goal is just have fun.   It will be more for the camaraderie than the pace.  I say that now, we’ll see if I follow through or bolt at the starting line 🙂

I thought by this point of vacation, I would be going a little stir crazy. But, nope, just slacking it big time.   I should be Christmas shopping, I have an advertising plan that I am woefully behind on.   Actually forget Christmas, both my parents birthdays are next week.  I need to register for classes, etc etc.   I did manage to get my car to the dealer to fix the door locks and made it through a dentist appointment with flying colors.   🙂   I also met some friends for a yummy lunch today.  We couldn’t decide where to go, so we hit the Irish pub.  I had never been there before.  Pretty sad considering it’s 2 blocks for where I used to work…for 5 years.    We ate some of the largest salads I have ever seen.   M’s made me laugh, it was called the “Man Salad”.  It looked amazing though.  We may have gone over their lunch a bit, oops.

Now its time to get some rest for tomorrows race and family fun to follow.  Plus puppy time!

I hope anyone who’s traveling has safe journeys.

Anyone else running a “trot” tomorrow?  Good luck!

Spooner’s Cove 5 mile- Race Recap

Thursday and Friday were crazy days at work.  I don’t know why, but I think they made me stupid.  By the end of Thursday, I could barely speak without stuttering.  It was ridiculous, but my co-workers thought it was hilarious.

I packed my running gear of Friday, thinking optimistically that I would try to run on my lunch.  Then I got a call inviting me out after work.  One of my coworkers from my old location was moving and Friday was her last day, and they were going out to dinner to say goodbye.  For some reason being slightly run worn at work was ok but being funky for going out- not so much.   There was no time to get home and change in between work and dinner. So no run for me.   The dinner was fun though, it was sad to see her go.   Quite a few people went for drinks after but I had a race in the morning!  I headed home like a good girl.

This morning was the Spooner’s Cove Trail Run.  They offer a 5 mile, 7 mile, 25K and 50K.   The races are small, only about 160 people overall.   Which is good, because the majority of the race route is single track.

Black was the color in 2013
Black was the color in 2013

This was also my mother’s very first race.   She could have chosen an easy one like the HOB 5K, but she chose a trail race.  She’s crazy like that.  🙂  Sign in and shirt pick up was organized and super easy.   No goody bag, but who needs random flyers anyway?  All races started at the same time and on time.    And we were off!

Along the bluff
Along the bluff

First 100 yards was uphill (woo hoo), on a paved road, and then it was trail bound.  The first 2 miles weaved along the bluff and it was the widest part of the trail.   I said that this race would be run at my mom’s pace and that is what we did.  We ran when she wanted and walked when she wanted.   And, like I said before, she walks fast!  As the trail narrowed into single track, it was amusing how frustrated she got when we got stuck behind someone who had slowed down.  We eventually got passed her and we were running again.

We were heading into the real climb part of the trail when I felt something stab me in my shin.  I was momentarily confused, the trail had widened and there weren’t any bushes with branches on the side.  I tried to ignore but it just seemed sharper.  So I looked down at my shin and there was a giant wasp/ yellow jacket on my sock.  I had been stung by a freakin’ bee!    I had to flick it off; luckily it seemed my knee socks took the worst of it.  However it stung for the next couple of hours.   For the next ½ mile, I was trying not to turn into a hypochondriac.  I was just out of breath because of the incline, I was not allergic!

Going up, before it got hard
Going up, before it got hard

Miles 2-4 were pretty much all uphill.   There was no running just walking, hard to feel bad though, most everyone else was walking too.   We tried to pick up the pace on every slight downhill when switching hills but it was harder than we thought.

The area has had very little rain.  The last time I did Valencia Peak, the mountain path was hard packed.   Not so much this time.  The sand was very loose; we were either sinking in it or sliding on it.   That did not help our time.  We finally hit the split, the 7 miles, 25k and 50K runners continue up the mountain another mile, and the 5 milers headed back down.  At this point, we had about a mile to go.

We ran down as fast as we felt we could, at one point being overtaken by the speedy 50K’ers.  They were hauling.  We hit the road and walked for about 30 seconds.  Another 50K’er ran passed and told us were so close.    They had 23 miles to go and they were cheering us on.

We ran down the hill, and across the finish line.  We crossed at 1:06:??.  My phone was in my jacket pocket and by that time it was tied in knot around my jacket.  I couldn’t get it to stop it, so I am unsure of what the exact time was.   My mom is a bad ass and finished her very first race ahead of me.   And it was a hard one.  She just kept pushing.  We got our medals and were stretching by the cove when she asked when the next one was!

Her first medal!!

It was a good race and I am proud of our time.  We followed it up with a good lunch from Woodstock’s, a great salad and a slice of pizza.   Now it’s time for bed for me, my legs are kind of sore!

Anyone running Las Vegas this weekend?

Good luck to those bloggers (everyone else too!) running half-marathons, marathons and ultra’s this weekend.

Operation Run- Race Recap

First off, thanks to everyone and the well wishes.  It was a great way to go into a race!

Today I took part in the first annual Operation Run, an 8 mile run put on by Amazing Surf Adventures and their Operation Surf.  I thought I had seen this run advertised last year, but I guess I made that up in my head, oops!  First time races normally make me a little leery but there were no fears here.   Check in was quick as no bibs were handed out.  Turns out the county has restrictions on “races” that may not apply to “fun runs”.  Who knew?   The start finish line was in a Gymnastics center parking lot.   There was also a huge American Flag on display-

The announcer was amusing with the right touch of snark. Love it!  He was with Operation Surf and he handed the mike over to another man, wearing a Boston jacket from 2012! ( nerd moment).  He described the course, basically an 8 mile rectangle, watch out for traffic as no roads were closed.  He also mentioned that end of the race would involve zig-zagging though the parking lot?  Why,  because he knew that if us runners showed up for an 8 mile race, we would be very upset if it came in under 8.  So true! There were 2 aid stations along the course and Grizzlies monitoring every intersection.  Shirts and medals were handed out after crossing the finish line.  Official race times are supposed be online soon.  All in all, it was a very smoothly run race, especially considering it was the first year!   And the race shirt was great, even if it ran a little small-

and the shirt...
and the shirt…

It was 34 degrees when I left my house this morning so I dressed in capris and a long sleeve shirt.  I also had my gloves and an ear warmer.   I had a bottle with Gatorade and a few candy corns for fuel.  This would be my first 8 mile race, so I was trying to be prepared.  It never hurts to be a little extra prepared.   I got Mr. Nike going and then paused it for the National Anthem and the short walk to the start line.   And then we were off!  The guy in front of me and I almost plowed right into a photographer who thought it would be a good idea to take pictures from inside the crowd. No!!!

Miles 1-2.5 were a long slow incline.  I was hot about .5 miles in, oops.    Coming up on mile 1, I was sucker punched by Mr. Nike.  His voice comes and says “mile 1” ok good so far, then “20:32 minutes”.  Umm what?!  Guess when I thought I had paused it, I didn’t.   WTF.  Well that is not the way that you want to start off a race.   I had no idea what my first mile was and my average pace was just a guess from then on, based on the overall time.  Plus the distance was slightly off due to that little walk to the start line.  Ugh, every time Nike would give a status update, I just became irritated.  But I ran on.

Mile 1-3 seemed pretty good, warm but good.  I was tired but thought I had a decent pace.  Had to lose the over shirt by mile 3 and didn’t want to walk so I managed to get it off while running, very awkward.   🙂 After mile 2 we were off the main road and running the back roads in between wineries.  It was very pretty today, I should be used to it, seeing as I live in wine country, but today seemed prettier.  The first aid station was run by ROTC members, nice!

I rounded the corner for mile 3 and I was tired.  I felt like my crappy week had caught up to me.  Mile 4.5 was uphill and I caved.  I had to take a walk break.  I was frustrated because I had run 10 miles of my half before needing a break.  I walked to the top and told myself I was running the rest, and I was going to do it faster.  I think the slight downhill had affected my judgment.  But I kept running.

At mile 6, I was bummed that this wasn’t a 10K.   I had 2 miles to go.  I was tired and cranky but just kept pushing.    Ran passed the Grizzlies with their great signs and kept going.  Mile 7-8 was the longest mile ever, I hit the parking lot and really wanted to say screw it to the zig zag, I’m ok with 7.7.  But somehow, I had enough in me for an actually speedy finish.  I managed to pass up one of the people I had been pacing for that last 5 miles.  Woo hoo!!!  Even though Nike was all jacked up, I feel fairly confident in saying that I ran a negative split!!! How unlike me.

yay, I'm done!
yay, I’m done!

After filling out the finishing card, I finished 52 out of ?,  and picking up my shirt and medal, I tracked down the woman I had passed.  I didn’t want to wait for the times to go up, I wanted some idea of my time and I figured she finished nearest to me.  She came in at 1:17:11.  Seriously? Hell yeah!  Now I just want to see the posted times to confirm it.  Also the medal and race bag were awesome.

Great Medal!
Great Medal!

It was a tiring race, not course wise, mostly just me, but I felt like I pushed through it.  Plus it was a well-organized race for a good cause, our veterans. There were some amputee runners out there today and I was inspired by their perseverance and bravery.

Where's the food?

I completed the day with a good lunch and a little shopping.  I then headed home for a last bit of Slacker-ness before work tomorrow.  Shout out to mom and her race photography skills- Thanks!

How are we halfway through November already?
