GREW From the Vines 5K- Recap

A top 20 finish!  I got lost!  Have I peaked your interest?  🙂

Having been feeling under the weather for a week, hearing the alarm go off on Saturday morning was rough.   It was cold outside, I was tired and my bed was so warm.   What was I thinking?     Oh I know, it was my pride.  I wanted to prove to myself that even feeling crappy all the time, I could still pull a 30 minute 5K in a race.    Stupid, I know.  IMG_7259 Since it was a cold morning and I was fearing asthma issues, I layered up in clothing.  Yes, I know it’s cold air I breathe in that causes my issues but I just felt like the layers helped me be mentally prepared.   As I still wasn’t feeling great I told myself 31 minutes would be a good adjustment.  Like that made a huge difference.  Head games, much?IMG_7229It was a smaller local race so I headed out around 8:15 for a 9:00 start time.  My mom and the puppy were with me as well.  I knew what winery it was at and its general location.  Driving out I never saw any signs that said Villa 46, we came up on another winery that I had a run a race at and I knew that we had gone to far.   We turned around and headed back the other way, this time paying attention to the street numbers.  We find what we are looking for but it says Villa Toscana… and we couldn’t pull in the main drive.   Continuing on a little farther we found a delivery driveway with yet another name but same street numbers.  We pulled in there and parked next to some trucks that had already parked.    Seeing the number of cars parked and then seeing the page of pre-registered runners confirmed that this was going to be the smallest race I have ever run.  Only 17 people pre-registered.  I think we barely hit 20 by start time.  IMG_7212After a little announcement, a race volunteer told us there would be kids guiding us at each turn so we wouldn’t get lost.  He also mentioned staying inside the fence.  Then we were off!  The first mile started on a dirt road but it fairly flat and wide so it was easy to run on.  The kids directed us right and we headed out towards the street.    As we got to the street I saw an arrow pointing right again but it kind of looked like it was telling us to run on the uneven grass.  That didn’t seem right and everyone was running on the street so I followed.  Let me clarify that the grass was on the inside of the fence.

Wow, that looks like bad form
Wow, that looks like bad form

As we ran down the street, we passed the delivery driveway.  Some people turned up it only to turn around and run back to the street.  A volunteer was yelling something towards us but we couldn’t hear him.  A group of us chatted, figured they told us to stay on the street and all kept running towards the main driveway.  Turned in there, headed back across the start line and back to the first Y.  This time the kids sent us left.  Mile 1- 9:22.  I was feeling good so I was very happy with that time.

Then mile 2 came.  Going left this time sent us down into the vineyard.  Gorgeous views but I have run trails up mountains that had better maintained paths than that.  I should have worn my trail shoes.   By now I had decided to try to pace a tall guy wearing red in front of me and a woman in front of him.   Then the inclines started.  Ok, all were less than 100 ft but all were short and steep and on loose ground riddled with divets.    I know I have maintained an average base lately but I don’t have it in me to run hills right now.  However, I can power walk them faster than I can run them.   So that is what I did.   I lost red shirt here but was able to pass the woman who was struggling with the climb too.   From there it was another small climb and out on a grassy section.  Mile 2- 10:54.  Ouch.

Mile 3 led us around another set of vines and through the actual vines.  Have you ever tried to run between vines?  It’s hard!  Then a little down hill section that I flew down before heading back to the first set of vines.  This is where I passed a woman in blue, caught up to red shirt and passed him too.  I could have sworn we were going right and up that hill again but the kids waved us left.  Wait, what?  We should be close to done not running the opposite way of the start line!

I was also way too damn hot.  Capri’s and long sleeves were way too much for high 50’s.  I passed a guy in white shirt before rounding a corner and another little incline.  Red shirt caught back up.  No!  I sped up.   Another trek between two vines and it was up the last biggest hill and back towards the start.   I briefly checked my watch because I knew I had to be close to 30.  32:something, ugh.IMG_7261Then I noticed the mileage.  3.2 miles and I still had more to go.  What?!  Rounded a corner to the start and a woman waved me on through another gate and up the main drive way and finally to the finish.    Finaltime- around 34:4?  It took me a moment to stop my Garmin.  Finalmileage- 3.44.   My mileage was echoed by other runners watches as well.  According to my mother I was the second woman across the finish line.

Leading up to the finish line
Leading up to the finish line

So no, I did not hit the arbitrary time goal that I had set myself.  But I felt good throughout the race, my lungs and my stomach behaved for the entire thing.  And I passed people!!!!  It has been so long since I have done that, it felt kind of awesome.  Childish, I know, but still awesome.  🙂 IMG_7255The finish line was kind of gorgeous so we took enjoyed the scenery for a while before heading home.   There was a man who ran the race with his chocolate lab so we let Zoey and her meet.   Zoey was so excited to meet a dog that wanted to play and not attack her.   The lab was small for the breed and super sweet.    She put up with Zoey’s hyper level well.    So it was a good morning all around!  🙂

Can you guess where we all got lost?  The kids did a good job directing us which way to go.   However there were no kids at the corner where we went on to the street.    When we were supposed to stay inside the fence.  Yeah.  Oops.   Poor listening skills aside, getting lost driving there as well, it was still a good race.   I felt a little bad for the poor turn out.   I hope they try it again next year.   This time, I’ll wear my trail shoes.    Oh and blogger fail, I didn’t go back down into the vineyard to get pictures of the course.

Ever get lost at a race?  This makes my 3rd time.

Ever run a super tiny race?

Every Other Day

With Monday being a day off for me and my team not making the volleyball playoffs, it was the perfect day for a run.    However after running on Saturday and hiking on Sunday, that would be the third day on my feet.  I haven’t run back to back days in months.  Since cutting back a little I have been trying to run every other day.  So I wasn’t too sure how it was going to go.

Get away from the zombies!! You run!! lol
Awe, Pinterest, you rock

It was kind of warm when I headed out but better than last Thursday.  Once again I as running from Zombies.  Actually I noticed that I have the chase feature disabled in the app so mostly I just listen to the story.  Oops!  Oh well, I will save that feature for when I feel up to speed work again.  Sounds like it would be good for fartleks.    My legs were tired and I was a little warm so I kept it to a short 3 miles.    I clocked a low 11 mile for mile 2, woo hoo!

I admit that this week’s workout were planned around washing my hair.   Is that pathetic?  I have an all day work trip tomorrow, and getting up around 4:30 means I want to be ready as soon as possible which means no flat iron.   I have to say that running every other day has helped my hair feel a little healthier.  🙂  But that’s not the point.  A lazy quicker Thursday morning means no workout on Wednesday.   Which in turn meant running on Tuesday.  4 days in a row?  That was either going to be the worst run ever or not.

stormy weather
yeah, it never rained

Sometimes the craziness of Tuesdays after a 3 day weekend makes me wish we had worked on Monday.  I was late getting out of work and there was chatter of a storm coming in.  By the time I got back to town the light was fading rapidly due to clouds and the wind had picked up.  The river path runs adjacent to the street, so I figured I would try to squeeze in 3 miles.   With my slower pace I wasn’t sure I would have the time and I also thought I might get cold since I hadn’t packed for a temperature drop.    But bonus for packing a neon colored shirt!    After walking a bit, I started running but still took walk breaks when needed.  I thought I was going to have a problem breathing since the humidity was 63% but all was good.  Maybe I finally figured out my inhaler?   When I turned around and headed back it was pretty dark.  I had the aid of a slight downhill section so I booked it.   My lungs and stomach held and I ended up clocking a 9:47 in mile 3.   Best mile I’ve run since August, woo hoo!    I’m not sure if it was the weather or feeling rushed or if it’s because my stomach has been slightly better but I’ll take it.  🙂

Now it’s off to bed for me, I have a long drive in the morning and I do not like long drives.  Let alone ones followed by a day long seminar.    Any tips for staying awake?  I slept through almost every college class, something about enclosed places and no air.   I’ve already plotted the locations of McDonald’s along the way.  🙂  Not for the food but for the cheap Diet Soda.  Caffeine is a must tomorrow.

How has your week been?

Run any awesome miles lately?

Tell me I’m not the only one who washes their hair every other day?

Seriously, tips for staying awake at a seminar?  Oh that’s followed by an exam?

Changing it Up

I hope everyone had a good weekend!

Last year I went on numerous hikes/ trail runs.  I would power walk up and run like a crazy person down them.  It was fun.   🙂   This year, with so many races and wanting to PR  a few, I was leery of trails.   Too afraid I would do something stupid and hurt myself.  Ego got in the way of fun.   😦     With my recent inability to maintain pace, I have decided to treat it like  good thing and get back off-road.  With that line of thought, I went and bought myself something pretty-trailshoesI figured that maybe an actual pair of trail shoes would be a good idea.  A little more traction for the times I careen wildly down a hillside.    Plus the purchase would help me guilt me into following through when I am feeling like a slacker.   🙂   Trails are the place where I have fun and don’t mentally berate myself for my pace.   I took my shoes for 3.5 mile spin around the lake in the dirt on Tuesday.   They felt great, so today is was time for a baby trail.

The easy part
The easy part

I was looking to start small, so my mom and I headed to the trail from the Firehouse 5K run.    It’s around 3 miles, give or take.  We headed up the back way, thinking we would hit the switchbacks on the way down.  Fine by me, switchbacks suck.     My shoes felt great in the loose dirt.  The only problem was my huffing and puffing.  It wasn’t humid so I thought I could get by without using my inhaler.  No luck, but I also hadn’t been stupid enough to leave it behind.    Gaining 500 ft in 3/4 of mile didn’t help either, but after using it I was fine.   The rest was mostly downhill, ha!

We made it! ( a little windy, too!)
We made it! ( a little windy, too!)

IMG_6789 IMG_6759The view from the top* was great as usual.  My mom wanted to go down a different path just to see where it went.   I think we lost most of that 500 feet in 1/4 mile.  I like downhill but this was ridiculous.  The sand was so loose, we kept sliding.  We slowed to a crawl-like pace but we made it.   Thank you shoes.  We came across a Y in the trail so we just picked one.  It led to another Y and again we just picked one.  The mountain’s not that big so we figured we wouldn’t get too turned around.  Plus this leaves more trails to explore another day.      IMG_6762

Where I started sliding
Where I started sliding

A little past 2 miles, we could see the road and figured that we had accidentally cut the hike super short.  It was getting pretty hot so we decided that we could deal with that instead of heading back the way we came.  Coming down the trail we came across 2 rows of white stone boxes on the right side and a few more on the left.  One was open, empty and a little broken.     Being the smart asses that we are, we start cracking jokes about the X-Files and vampires.

very large and ominous looking
very large and ominous looking

It looked like we were coming into the back of a park.  As we got closer we realized it was a cemetery.    Ok, the boxes make a little more sense.  But still stone?  Bad form for our previous wise cracks.   It was very pretty as we walked through to get back to main road. But I was also confused because the headstones seemed really close together.   I did Google it later and found that due to flooding over the years, not only have headstones moved but some graves have as well.  Some were moved to other cemeteries but the records are not the best.   IMG_6784

We came out on a rural highway.  We were actually about 1/2 mile away from where we parked but the road had wide shoulders.     Walking back put us around 3 miles.  It took us about an hour though, so it felt like a good workout.   So now it’s on to the next trail.  🙂

*I took a pretty cool panorama but it refuses to load-ugh.

How was your weekend?

Ever get turned around and end somewhere totally random on a run/ hike?

What’s the strangest thing you’ve encountered?

HOB Fun Run Recap

91/94 would be a pretty good test grade, right?  It’s less awesome however when it is your race standing.  But let’s backup.

I worked the packet pickup- late registration table for the race on Saturday.  It went really smooth, mostly pickups for the 10k.  It seemed like most of the 5k runners were going to pick up on race day.  It also looked like there were more runners this year.   It’s kind of cool watching things go up from the other side.  And seriously how cute is this?

Race day dawned gray and early.   Gray–clouds and fog–bringing humidity.   Ugh.  I honestly can’t think of the last time this race didn’t happen in perfect sunshine.  I used my inhaler and told myself not to think about it.    I was the only one of my group running the 10k so it was just me and my nerves at the starting line.    Knowing so many people at this race always stresses me out, and that was before I saw the Aggie’s show up.

The Aggies are a run club based in northern California and they have some serious talent.    They show up en masse, all in black and just run.   They usually do multiple loops of the course outside of the races.  They have zero body fat and hardly ever look winded.  This course is flat and fast and used to be a USATF certified race.   There used to be 2 10k’s and 5k’s, one for the Open/Masters runners and one for the rest of us.   Even without the certification and extra races, the HOB fun run stills does one rare thing for small races- cash.  Prize money is rewarded to the top finishers.  Spoiler alert- Aggie’s won both races.  Seriously fast and intimidating.IMG_6477

Then it was go time and we were off!  My only goal for the 10K was to run a solid race.  I wanted to maintain a 10:00 pace.  I set my Garmin for intervals- 6:30 run and :30 walk.   I felt pretty good in mile 1 so I was hopeful for the next 5.     Mile 2 I was hit with the worst side stitch ever.  I don’t get side stitches, I think I have had maybe 3 in 5 years of running.  Those 3 were all up under my right ribcage, this one was low on my right side.  It hurt so damn bad I briefly wondered if that was what an appendix bursting felt like.  I am used to stomach pain but this hurt.  What gives?

The pain finally eased as I hit mile 3.  Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, I noticed that breathing was getting harder.   Oh come on!   Out came the inhaler again and the rest of the race was walking interspersed with bits of running.   I was lapped by the lead runners (Aggies!!) on my first lap.  Ouch.  I kind of wanted to hitch on a ride on the police motorcycle leading them.  As I kept trucking I decided that my new realistic goal was to just not be last, I thought I might be able to pull that off.  91 out of 94- not last!  Time- 1:08:03.

doesn't everyone do this?
doesn’t everyone do this?

I crossed the finish line as a pale, shaky mess.  My inhaler helps loosen my chest but my heart was racing and I could not stop shaking.   I drank some gatorade and grabbed my bib for the 5k.   This pissed off my mother.   She wanted me to quit but I know that standing still and sitting make the shakiness worse.   The more I think about it, the more anxious I get and that just makes it worse.  Walking helps so I figured I would walk it out in the 5k.    R hadn’t been feeling well so I figured we could walk it together.  I had trouble getting the new bib on but managed just before the whistle.

C and I
C and I

I’m not completely crazy, a little over a mile in I felt a little better.  We just kept walking.    From mile 2.5 on, other racers are coming back on the other side of the road.  R and I got to wave to C and her husband as they ran by, they broke 30!   Right behind them was T and her husband.  She roped him into running it at the last-minute and it was their first race.  They rocked it, finishing under 30 too!   I was able to take action shots of them running.  🙂  It was R’s first race as well and I felt bad for slowing her down but it was fun walking it together.   Then we crossed the finish line and we were done!    Time- 42:37.

R and I
R and I

Other than the requisite lingering tightness in my chest, I felt better.  The walking did help.  We hung and chatted a bit and took a bunch of pictures.  T and R really had fun so hopefully I can get them to run more races with me in the future.  Insert evil genius laugh.  🙂  I was also looking for my mother; turns out she was so mad at me that she walked home.    Oops.

Diaper Dash Time

The kids half mile race was up after the 5K.  As time was getting closer to start, more kids were coming to the start/ finish area. The DJ changed to Gangham Style and 90% of the kids started busting a move.  It both hilarious and adorable at the same time.  Some of those kids had moves!   I actually headed out before the race began, I felt better but I knew I needed rest.  No pancake breakfast for me!

Neither race went how I had hoped but I had a fun morning.  Friends really can turn around a rough morning.  Especially when we are all wearing the same shirt.  🙂  I was also able to catch up with another SLO ambassador who ran the race as well.   This is still one of my favorite races.     Next year I will conquer the Fun Run… and have fun.  🙂  But T?  No tutus.

I’ll leave with my new medal model- Kimi-IMG_6534

Ventura Marathon-Half- Recap

I had a feeling this post may border on wordy which is why most of the pictures were uploaded in the last post.   Now for what those photos didn’t show.

The Weekend-

I was able to get off work a couple hours early on Friday, so I headed straight home to finish packing and preparing.  I felt like I was both taking too much and not enough at the same time.   My mother and I headed out early Saturday morning, we planned on spending some time at the Ventura Mall before heading to packet pick up and the hotel.   I haven’t been in a mall in years and well it was kind of a let down.   The only upside was a Hot Topic for my inner nerd and I may have spent a little too much at Macy’s (damn Dooney!).  From there it was on to the hotel.

When I booked the hotel I looked for one that advertised as being near to the pier.  It didn’t occur to me to compare the addresses until 2 weeks ago.  Oops.  But I lucked out, the hotel was 1.2 miles from the pier on the same street and right next door to an In n Out, and I was able to get chocolate milk from the 7-11 across the street.  Sweet!   Dinner was at BJ’s Restaurant, where I indulged in a pretty good burger and fries.   That was followed by a 3.5 mile walk down to and around the pier to get my legs moving before trying to get some sleep.

Once checking out of the hotel on Sunday, we headed back to Santa Barbara for a little more shopping.   I was looking forward to a real Lululemon and just some window shopping.  The weather in Santa Barbara was amazing.   After that it was north to SLO for dinner and then finally home.  We were tired.

The Expo-IMG_6249

Not much to say here.  Packet pickup was a breeze, both easy and super windy.  Instead of a bunch of useless samples in the bag, they had a table or 2 of samples.   I only took a sample of KT tape.   The website looked like there would be a lot of vendors but most seemed more like local crafts and things.  Kind of like a farmer’s market minus the food.   I stopped by the ProCompression booth but there was no one working it?  There was live music playing and a little listening area as well.  A very nice (cute) police officer took a picture for us, but my mother deleted it- so there’s a selfie instead.  🙂

The Race-

Race morning dawned and I had no need of an alarm.   I hadn’t slept well the night before and had been awake off and on from about 3 on.   I wasn’t feeling so great but that wasn’t too surprising to me.    I had packed some candy corns for race fuel but they sounded nasty so I did not even take them.  I got ready and headed out the door, I had planned on walking to starting line.    While I was walking there the marathon runners were running up the other side.   They looked so ready to go,  to the point that 3 were bouncing basketballs while running.   Seriously?  It’s all I can do to run a half marathon and you are going to bounce a basketball (or 2!) while running 26.2!!!IMG_6222

Anywho, I made my way up to the starting line in time to jump into the first wave.  A few announcements and count down and we were off!    I had issues getting both my Garmin and my Nike+ app started but managed to get them going not too far from the starting line.    I was aiming for a 10:00 average so when mile 1 came in at 9:50, I was ok with that.  Mile 2 seemed a little tougher and fell to 10:17.   I was using intervals of 8:30 run and 1:00 walk as I knew going in I wasn’t 100%.  Even with this I was tiring quickly.  The weather felt way warmer than I would have liked.   The course went through a nice housing area before going back to the main street.  It turned off towards the harbor for a quick out and back to add mileage before heading back down the main street into Oxnard and out into some fields before turning around and going back the way we came.  Mile 5- I took 2 walk breaks, I was having trouble getting my breathing under control.   I had already used my inhaler 3 times.  Which was odd because I hadn’t used it on any run since my last half marathon in July.   I kept trucking along until my next walk break at mile 6.5.  Which is where I had to get real.

I only ran once in taper week leading up to the race.  It was 3.5 miles and it was the hardest run I have ever done.   I mentioned briefly that I had finally started my antibiotics.  Between those and my lovely stomach I was thisclose to deferring Ventura.  I was feeling so crappy.   I told myself I was being a big baby and would be fine.  In reality I had no business running a half marathon at this time.   Mile 6.5 was the beginning of this epiphany (and others but more about that later).

I walked it in from there.  I called my mom at mile 7.5 and told her she had more time to relax at the hotel because I wasn’t going to be near 2:10:00.    I just kept walking.  I was so hot, my hamstrings were cramping, and my left shin felt super angry.    I took 2 cups of water at every aid station.  One to drink and one to dump over my head.  I alternated my Gatorade and their water to stay hydrated.   I had Honey Stingers in my belt but the very idea of those made me ill.   I grabbed a Cliff Shot around mile 9 and carried it for a while.  I eventually ripped it open around mile 11.  I had somehow managed to grab one with caffeine and I was hoping it would help the lungs.   I know it didn’t have enough caffeine to do anything but one can hope right.    I jogged a tiny bit each mile both to keep the pace below 14:00 and to loosen up my stiff legs.   The volunteers and the crowd support was pretty awesome.  Around mile 11.5, there was a little boy dressed as the Flash giving high fives. He was cool. 🙂IMG_6228[1]

The last 2.5 miles or so I was keeping pace with a women who was race walking and a guy who would run ahead and then walk.  I always caught him on the walking portions.  I couldn’t tell if he was doing intervals or if he was as spent as I was.  I never saw the 13 mile marker but did see the 26 one.  I figured I could run the last .2.   Ha!  That was the longest .2 of my life.  I thought the finish line was never going to arrive.   I did leave race walker and interval guy behind.   Finally there was the finish line and I was done.  Half marathon #9 complete, not my best, not my slowest but probably the most walking.   I won’t lie, I did get a little teary eyed at the finish.  Thank goodness for sunglasses.Ventura Marathon Results

Since I had finished later than planned, I barely had time to limp back to the hotel to shower and check out.  I hurt badly.  I don’t think I have been that sore after a race since my very first half marathon.  I gimped the 1.2 miles back to the hotel, stopping to stretch along the way.   The chocolate milk in the mini fridge was the best thing ever.   After checking out, we hit In n Out for food.  I was suddenly hungry.   Finding out that they still sold extra large drinks was the second best thing ever- that Diet Coke tasted amazing.   I did feel bad for my mom though, she had to be seen in public with me- jean shorts, teal tank and bright purple compression socks.  I was styling, ha!

So no, this race did not go according to plan but it was still a good weekend.  Shopping was fun, the food was yummy.  I also learned that I have serious problems tolerating humidity (74% WTH?!).  I got a few compliments during the race about my use of neon and I got a shout out from a fellow SLO ambassador when she ran by me.   So while I am rethinking some things, I still call this weekend a win.  🙂

How do some of you deal with humidity on a regular basis?  Seriously, anything over 25% is rough for me.  Maybe I am spoiled?

What’s your post race reward?
