Week 13- Crash

In so many ways.

After returning to Oakland, even though I felt like crap, I figured would only need a couple days with no running and I would kick it. Not so much. I barely made it through Monday at work and ended up going home early. Tuesday I actually called in sick and spent all day either in bed or my chair.

Had to get sick to get her to hang out with me😂

Wednesday I should have stayed in bed. I went to work partly because I am stupid and partly because I had an interview in the afternoon. And adding to the chaos of the week, someone backed into my car outside work. I have parked in the almost the same spot for the last 6 years with no issues. Until Wednesday. We couldn’t open the driver’s side door in the beginning. Well crap, how do I get to my interview?? Luckily, my boss was able to force it open. Yay.

Thursday I still felt like crap and had the bonus of a swollen left eye but made it almost through the entire day of work. I had to leave early as the body shop was able to fit me in for an insurance appraisal. Now I wait for the insurance companies.

I managed to make it through a whole day of work, this time with a swollen right eye. Yay, the weekend was here except I was working Saturday. When I originally volunteered to work the shift, I had no idea I was going to wind up with the plague.

By Sunday, I felt a pain in my throat that reminded me of strep throat. I took my lazy butt to Urgent Care. No strep but acute bacterial pharyngitis. Which I think is fancy terms for a bad sore throat. But it got me antibiotics. Now, we wait to see what this bill will run as my fancy insurance has no in-network providers for urgent care.

So yeah, that was a crap week. 0 miles run and let’s be real here, I barely moved more than was required last week. Fingers crossed these antibiotics do their job and I stop feeling like a creature soon-ish. Oh and I missed one of my favorite local races this past Sunday. Verdict is out on whether or not I’ll be able to run the other one coming up this weekend.

How was your week?

Week 50/ Vacation Week 1 Recap

Otherwise known as Disneyland fail, the flu and a DNS.  😛

I had so many plans for this first week of vacation.  They were good ones too!  Since when do I have plans?  It was kind of exciting.    So how did those plans go?  Ha ha!

I came down with the flu.  I spent Friday through Sunday alternating between my bed or my comfy chair.   I stopped eating on Wednesday.  I know I talk about wanting to lose weight but not like this, this was miserable.  My back hurt from coughing so much, stomach muscles I forgot about were aching in protest.    I’ve slept too much and yet not enough.    But let’s backtrack to the one fun day of the week.

With my mother’s birthday and Christmas both being in December, I thought it would a great gift and a fun way to spend a few days if we went to Disneyland.  The plan was to drive down on Tuesday, check into the hotel, hit the main park all day Wednesday and then California Adventure on Thursday.  Neither of us had ever been to California Adventure before.

After some nightmare traffic in La, we arrived at our hotel like planned.  I had a tickle in my throat but I was trying to ignore it.   I was hoping a good night’s sleep would make things all better.    My throats didn’t hurt and I felt super tired in the morning but I always wake up a little rough so I put my game face on and we were at Disneyland before it opened.  Yay!

I’ve always wanted to see Disneyland at Christmas and while it was just as awesome as I had hoped, I hadn’t anticipated how crowded it would be.    Ouch.  As crowded as it was, the wait times for the rides weren’t too bad.  We were able to ride every ride we wanted to except for Indiana Jones as it was having technical difficulties throughout the day.   Boo.   I rode a couple of rides for the first time- Autotopia, It’s a Small World, Storybook Canal.  I think I have the name wrong on that last one.

The problem was is that I was losing serious steam throughout the day.  I thought I was doing a decent job of hiding it until my mom pointed out that I was walking hunched over.  Oh, oops.   I had some troubles in the Pirates of the Caribbean line and leaned against whatever I could.   Luckily Pirates is a longer, low key ride and one of my favorites, so it was a good way to get off my feet for a bit.

We were having fun but I was fading fast.    We hoped food would help, but instead I could barely finish it.   Then Space Mountain made me a little green.    Once drenched by Space Mountain, we decided to find a spot to watch the parade from.     The parade was great but oh so cold.    We wandered through a few shops before deciding that we were both cold and tired and heading back to the hotel.   So instead of staying at the park until late in the evening, we were back in the hotel by 6.  😢

The next day I was worse.  So bad we checked out and headed home instead.   I was so ill that I gave my mom the keys so she could drive while I hung my head out the window like a dog.   The proximity to me and an open car window did my mom no favors and instead of a second fun day, I got her sick.  #birthdayfail   We made it home by early afternoon where I showered and then crawled into bed.

And I’ve barely moved since.   I’ve put off errands and Christmas shopping.  I was supposed to run with Ashley on Saturday.   Wah!  And Sunday?  Sunday was supposed to be my last race of 2016.   A 5 mile trail race out at Montana de Oro.    But considering walking to the bathroom tires me out, I probably shouldn’t be running up a mountain.   Wah.   I love this race.

At the rate I am going, I have no idea when I am going to run.   I may end up binging on too many Christmas movies.   One day I’ll be hungry again.  I did manage to drag myself to the DMV though-

How was your week?

Ever go to Disneyland during the holidays?

How long does the flu knock you out?

Of Choices and Coughing

I have a great new ab workout- coughing!

Oh, it doesn’t work like that?  Well, it should.  If you can’t count that than the only thing I have been even slightly productive at since my last is sleeping.  And even that hasn’t been done well.

My hope that resting on Thursday would get me through my long runs turned out to be in vain.     I was miserable all Thursday night but made my way into work on Friday.   I have this thing about calling in sick, I hate it and rarely ever do it.  Particularly on a Friday or Monday.  That’s a huge no-no for me.  But with a 45 min to an hour commute, I really need to get over that.  I made it 3 hours before heading home.     I proceeded to spend the next 2.5 days alternating between my chair and my bed.  It turned into some cold- flu thing and I have had body aches and chills and a pounding headache.  I spent a lot of time sleeping and it wasn’t even good sleep.  Ugh.

Running did not happen at all this weekend.  I am hoping that I feel up to a few miles on Tuesday but I know they won’t be easy.  The last time I was sick was actually last January and it kicked my ass energy wise for a few weeks.   Doing laundry exhausted me today.  This has me a little nervous.  The 25K is in two weeks and I was already doubting it.

My left leg has been a little achy lately, and my mother has had a bum knee.   She is ok going uphill but as we all know, down hills can be evil.   And the 25K has a lot of downhill.  She did see a doctor about it but he left it up to her.   One of the points of the 25K was that we were going to do it together.   Now I am concerned that both of us may push too hard when we really shouldn’t.  This weekend was supposed to be a 18-20 mile weekend, half road, half trail.  I feel unprepared and don’t think I can catch up.   Plus there is the fact of Surf City 7 days after the 25K.

I am torn.  I feel like backing out would be the smart idea but it feels icky.    Between coughing fits and naps today, I went online to look at other races my mother and I could do in the area.  We are pretty sparse on trail races but I did find a half marathon on an army base in a month that looks like a better fit.    Just not as scenic.   So yeah, torn.

Alright, sorry for the downer of a weekend update!

Tell me how awesome your weekend was? What kind of running did you get in?

Thoughts on the race conundrum?
