Week 24- Landed Wrong

How is halfway through June?  I am so in denial.

I finally had my CT scan on Monday for my ever present side pain and I was glad to finally get that completed. Scheduling it for the afternoon wasn’t too bright but I made it work.

Later in the week I felt like I was run over by the tired truck. I was so damn tired from Wednesday on and I couldn’t figure out why. I fell asleep on my lunch Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and took a nap on Saturday. Everyone around me seems to sick with something so maybe I was fighting a bug or something? I don’t know.

Then there was my foot but more on that below.

Monday- 3.41 miles  Maybe heading out for a run after a day of fasting and drinking a ton of barium wasn’t a good idea. Combine that with 95* weather and while this run started out ok, things turned south on me at the halfway point and my stomach let me know that I needed to to back at my car sooner rather than later but could I please not run to get there? 😂

Tuesday- Rest

Wednesday- Rest I was planning on running but then the brother offered to take the family to dinner so food won out.

Thursday- 2 miles  This was not the plan for this run.   However a little over a mile in, I landed wrong on my left foot and felt a shooting pain.  I stopped, walked but it felt ok so I adjusted my shoelaces and my shoe and ran on.  Only to pull up short less than 1/2 mile later by the same stabbing pain in my foot.  And this time it didn’t go away.  I turned around and hobbled back to my car.

Friday- Rest I never run on Friday’s but I really wanted to make sure to take it easy on my foot.  The odd thing was that it didn’t feel horrible when I woke up or throughout the day.

Saturday- Rest Once again, I was resting the foot but it really did feel ok.   I actually spent the morning helping my brother buy a new truck.   When you’ve bought as many cars as I have, you get called in for reinforcement.  Well that and your resting bitch face.  😛  However it’s hard to be as helpful as possible when the Toyota dealership gets a shipment in the night before and one of those trucks happens to be the exact truck your brother was eyeing on the Toyota website right down to the color.  They were literally pulling the plastic off and he looked like a kid in a candy shop.  Poker face! Poker face!

Sunday- 3.1 miles Not the long run that I hoped for.  As soon as I put on running shoes, I knew my foot wasn’t happy.  What gives?! My foot had felt fine until then.   Grrr.  I still headed out for a run hoping that it would ease up.  I tried to run nice and easy and just focus on my form and sometimes it worked.   Mostly, not so much and then I landed in a pothole.  I kept the run short and on the slower side so as not to aggravate the foot any more.

8.56 milesfor the week.  I didn’t think I could run less than last week but I did.  Boo to landing wrong.

Week 23-Vacation

Upcoming Races-

  • Nada!

I do not have a race in the immediate future and y’all, I am so good with that.  I need a break.  Even though the marathon and San Diego were a month apart I think they were too close.   My body kind of rebelled during May, maybe it was trying to tell me something?

Currently, my next scheduled race is October.  I won’t last that long, I am already looking at race or two in July but a little break will do me good.   Which my body reinforced last week.

I took all of last week off work and that was so nice.   I caught up on a few things, ran- err attempted- a few miles and slept.  A lot.  I mean a lot.  I also ate way too much but let’s not go there.

Oh and the puppy got to go to the beach!!

Monday- Rest I didn’t get home from San Diego on Sunday night until after 8.  I woke up on Monday tired and sore.  So I didn’t do a whole lot- it was glorious.

Tuesday- 3 miles Not good.   Nope.  I couldn’t even force myself to round it out to 5K.   My legs felt ok but the rest of me felt exhausted.  Exhausted like I sat on a bench partway through the run just to chill, I was abnormally tired.  Grrr.

Wednesday- 3.1 miles Global Running Day!  However the smart thing should have been to skip the run.  I could feel that my hips/glutes were angry before I even started and I was still tired.  But it was Global running Day- how could I miss it?? Stupid.    Not my brightest move.

Thursday- Rest So this time I listened to my body and whining legs and rested.

Friday- 3.1 miles Sense a theme here?  I headed out for a run in the afternoon but knew 1 mile in it wasn’t happening.   Glutes said yah, no.  So I walked it out.    I tried to look on the bright side and think that at least I was able to finish a podcast that way.

Saturday/Sunday- Rest I took the whole weekend off!  It didn’t start out that way, I was supposed to go on a hike with my mom on Saturday.  However, it turned out she woke up sick and I was feeling an increase in my lovely side pain.   Yay.   So with that being said and still feeling off in my hips and glutes, I decided rest was best.

9.2 miles for the week.    Could be worse for a chill week but I think I needed it.😀😀

Week 22- Wrong Side of the Tracks

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock n Roll San Diego 13.1- race week!!!!

Short weeks always seem to be just a little bit harder than they should be.  Short weeks right before you go on vacation and you’re trying to make sure you get everything off your checklist done so no one else has do it? Just that much harder.  However I had the prizes of both a race trip to San Diego and vacation at the end so I just buckled down.

I think.  I feel like I forgot something.

Monday- Rest (Memorial Day) I hate wasting a non work day with rest, I usually love getting more miles in but I also needed to get a few things done first.  One of those things was cleaning out the inside of my car as it was long overdue and I managed to overheat while doing so.  I mean, yes it was 95, but still that is kind of sad.  It took me super long to cool down and by then I just decided to make up the miles sometime during the week.

Tuesday- Rest The day back after a 3 day week is usually super busy so I prepared for that and did not take running gear.

Wednesday- 4.1 miles I headed to the river path for a few miles.  I have a training app that told me to do intervals and the Squadrunner app that had a mission of 6K but I was feeling fussy and not sure what I was going to do or what my glute/hip was going to let me do.  So I just let my legs do what they wanted.  It turns that was a 4.1 mile progression run.  Who knew?   My hip/glute felt super tight for the first 2 miles, I warmed up with my usual 1/2 mile walk but also did a few lunges and some other stretches at that point.  It eventually loosened up and I felt ok by the end of the run.  Sitting; later was a different story.

Thursday- Rest I took my running gear to work but I needed to get some things at the store before the weekend’s race trip so I decided to do that instead.   I planned to start packing as well but I all I really did was pull together part of my race day outfit.

Friday-  Packing– Holy crap, work was so damn busy.  I drove home feeling fried.  If I run this race next year, I am taking the Friday before off.  I was scrambling to pack and now wondering why I put it off and had the feeling I was going to forget something.  It was damn near my sports bra.  I packed everything and had finally sat down for a moment to relax when I suddenly realized I hadn’t packed one!  How did I forget that?

Saturday- Travel day  Oh for crying out loud, it took us 7+ hours to get to San Diego.  I didn’t get to the expo until after 3.  Thankfully picking up my bib and shirt was a breeze.  I almost forgot to get my shuttle band but remembered at the last minute.   The Brooks booth had a lot of cute merchandise but I told myself I didn’t need anything at the expo but then lost that resolve at the Sparkle Skirts booth when I bought my first one.   Then it was off to check into the hotel before meeting Kate for dinner!

Our hotels were near each other so we met at a Claim Jumpers that was nearby.  I had never eaten there before.  The food was so-so, the service interesting but the company was excellent!     Seriously- the waitress like forgot Kate’s dessert and when confronted about it they had no reason for it.  Then when she was taking away the dishes, she dropped one the sharp knives but in a way that it came right for my stomach.  Yikes!  But it was great catching with Kate and making our game plan for race morning.  Then it was back to the hotel to relax a bit and get to sleep.

However I realized what I forgot to pack- the soft flasks for hydration that go with my pack.   So, how was I going to carry water?

Sunday- Rock n Roll San Diego -13.1 miles Race recap to come.

17.2 miles for the week.  Considering I only ran twice, that’s not horrible.  And now I am on vacation- woo hoo!

*Oh and the title of the post?  When we were leaving San Diego on Sunday, we turned up a street and it was really confusing but due to traffic and lights, we got stuck on the wrong side of the boom barriers for the railroad track- we couldn’t go forward and we couldn’t go back and there was the coaster coming.  Eeeek!!!!! Runners just leaving the event in the park assured us we were far enough back- which we all hoped so as they were standing level with us!  The train went through fine, barriers raised, lights went green and we went on our way but I thought that was a fitting title for the post.

Week 21- What is in the Air???

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock n Roll San Diego 13.1

Dudes, this week- last week, whatever- was flippin’ weird.  Was something in the air?

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all bad- I ran, I ate pizza, I watched movies, I slept in, it just started out Rough.

Monday and Tuesday were so rough at work that by Tuesday evening I had somehow convince myself it was Friday and we had worked an entire week. When my alarm went off on Wednesday I almost cried.  😂 I’m not normally that emotional.  I pulled it together and got through the week.

In better news, I ran!  I also went to the movies- twice! I saw Solo and Deadpool 2.  Both were good in very different ways.   I also went into Solo with very low expectations but I did like it.😀

Monday- 3.51 miles- I was a little leery of how my hips and legs would after the previous week of pain so I decided to stick to the lake path and keep things nice and easy.   Any thing more than a twinge and I was calling it and going right back to the car.  It took a long time to warm up but I felt ok and decided to do 3 laps of the lake before calling it a day.

Tuesday- Yah no-  The day went south real fast when we lost the server at work and it never came back.  Any post work plans were put on hold as I had to drive to another location to take care of some things.

Wednesday- Rest- My overly emotional day.   And there was reason I didn’t run but I can’t remember what that reason is.😛

Thursday- Rest- So, I changed into my running clothes after work and drove to the river path after work.  I was exhausted but the entire 45-50 minute drive I kept telling myself I could run a few miles.  I could.  Then I parked and the weather was just cold and miserable.  I changed into my running shoes, I grabbed my running pack and put on my hat.  But I could not make myself get out of my car.   For whatever reasons, I just couldn’t do it.  And FYI- I park in front of a friends house so if they had looked out the windows at the moment they would have wondered what the hell I was doing.   I tossed the pack into the back and just drove home.  I don’t regret it.  I later fell asleep in the chair.

Friday- Nada- Typical Friday but we were down 2 people and I was so glad that it was actually, finally Friday.

Saturday- 5 miles- After a leisurely morning, I headed out in the afternoon.   I was expecting much as I had woken with another migraine but this was a surprisingly steady run.   My pace was relatively steady and I actually had to reign myself in a few times.  My playlist playing 3 fist bumping songs in a row didn’t really help with that.  The only issue was that my stomach cramped up twice.  The odd thing was that my stomach cramped at the same geographical location but miles apart in the run.  Dude- was there something in the air?

Sunday- 3.61 miles trail– Instead of a long run, I hit the trails.   My mother and I decided to do 3 Bridges again which while nice and short does give you a good climb.   We power hiked up and then I let myself run like crazy down half of it.  I knew the pounding probably wasn’t good for my hips and I didn’t want to leave my mother far behind but I think I needed that mad moment of freedom.  Even taking a hairpin too tight and almost going off the side of the trail was fun.  Well, after I saved myself it was fun, while I was teetering I was wondering just how far back my mother was and why wasn’t I wearing neon colors? But I did not go over the side.  Yes, I realize I tend to run a little recklessly on trails- which is why I am never completely by myself.

12.1 miles for the week.  Better than last week!

How was your week?

Week 20- More of the Same

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock n Roll San Diego 13.1

Last week did not go like I planned. Have I ever said that a week has gone according to plan? But this went south real fast in my first run of the week which was a drastic contrast to the awesome run I ended week 19 with. Maybe that should have been a sign? Who knows.

I did make it to my gastro last week to finally see about the left side pain that’s been nagging me since January.   He’s scheduling a CT and politely recommended a few dietary changes, haha.   Is it sad that I’ve just become used to the side thing??   Actually I prefer the side pain over the migraines. 😛

Monday- Rest As awesome as Sunday’s run was, I was cognizant to the fact that I was running faster than I should have been and I am only 2 weeks past a marathon. I figured running would probably be stupid so I just did a few of my PT exercises and squats/ lunges. Plus I had a headache again.

Tuesday- 1.5 miles I headed to the lake path hoping to try for some speed work. It might not have been the best idea but I was feeling like some 400’s. Things started to go wrong in the first 100 yards. I always walk the first 1/2 mile of my runs but I was keeping pace with someone on the path and it was awkward. Instead of running ahead, I like power walked to get ahead and then stay ahead and something in both my hips just felt wrong. I figured I would walk it out.  No dice.  It just kept getting worse… I tried to run and whimpered out loud. I felt like my legs weren’t connected to my pelvis correctly. What the hell? I thought about pushing through but this was straight up pain so I turned around and hobbled to my stretching bars then my car.😒

Wednesday- Holy migraine hell. Are you kidding me?? This is getting old, not only did my head hurt, now my jaw hurt. Oh and my hips still hurt.

Thursday-2.5 miles Shouldn’t have done that. My head still hurt but the hip pain had faded slightly and I really wanted to run. I kept moving forward in hopes that I just needed time to warm up but it just hurt. I finally grew a brain, turned around and hobbled back to my car.

Friday-Nothing Work and a little bit of stretching and rolling. I stopped sitting in my recliner- I think it’s making things worse. Oh and I still had a damn migraine.

Saturday- Rest I slept in knowing that the smart thing would be to take the weekend off, both for my head and my hips. I ran some errands then took a nap in the afternoon. On the ground. Funnily enough- that helped my head more than I could have guessed. (Better not have jinxed that)

Sunday- Rest More of the same. Sleeping in, stretching, rolling, and all tv watching is happening from the ground, usually with a foam roller not far.

4 miles for the week, if they even count. I knew May wasn’t going to be great mileage after Big Sur but I didn’t think I was going to fall apart. Grrrr.
