A (real) Plan for the Slacker?

I’ve mentioned before that I have serious problems sticking to training plans I’ve found online or in books, etc.   They’re all a little too cookie cutter and it’s very rare to find one that has rest days on Fridays.  And with my pace being all over the place these days, the pace based plans just make me sad.    Then there’s the Slacker in me that just has a knee jerk reaction to being “told” to run.   Which is why I created my own plan back in November in my almost free student planner.  Which I still kind of love by the way.   🙂  FullSizeRender

Personalized plans are available from a variety of websites but have you seen the cost?  Now if I could promise myself that I would follow it and not rebel like a clueless 4-year-old, the cost wouldn’t be that much.    I’ve just never trusted myself to follow through.    So I had my plan for the next few months and I was good.  Then I got an email.  The SLO Marathon partnered with McMillan Running for course specific plans.   A limited number of free training plans were offered to the ambassadors.  A personalized plan, just for you.   The length of your choosing, designed for you.  For free.  Free?  Seriously?!

I was so torn!  I mean that is an awesome offer.  I use their pace calculator all the time and they have articles and videos filled with training advice.  With a limited number of spots, I had to think quickly.  I liked my plan but also knew that I will likely need a little (or a lot) of guidance to break 2:00 at SLO.   But would a plan stress me out?  Also with the 25K this weekend and Surf City next weekend, I didn’t really have the time for a 12 week plan.   After all most plans don’t have a 13.1 mile race the first week.  🙂   I checked out the website and saw that they offered an 8 week plan.  Hang on, that’s doable.   I would have a little time to rest after Surf City and surely I could stick to a plan for 8 weeks right?  I finally decided it was too good of an offer to miss out on and jumped on it.

I received the questionnaire email about a week later.    Mother of Toledo, it was 6 pages long.  It asked my goals, my running habits, my usual schedule.  It asked for my best times ever as well as just the best times from the last 12 months.  It asked what I wanted out of running after accomplishing my goal and how many miles a week would burn me out. Etc, Etc.   There was also a question about any races I may want to run before my goal race.  I answered all of the questions as truthfully as I could.  I do admit that I left out the 25K part.   For some reason I was scared to put that in.  🙂  There was also a section that asked about any planned trips or events that would require schedule changes.    I may not have any planned trips but I put Fridays in that section.  Fridays usually end up being a longer (open to close) day plus my commute each way on top of that.   That combined with the fact that Fridays are usually busier and I take Friday as a rest day 99.9% of the time.   I wanted that to reflect in my plan so I made sure to specify that.   I submitted my answers and was told it would be 1-2 weeks before I heard back.  Even knowing that, I stalked my email everyday.  It came on Sunday night.

Woo hoo!  Included in the email was their half marathon race guide, their training philosophies, as well as a nutrition guide.  Ok, cool but what about the plan?  I opened the excel file with trepidation… and then blinked.  Wait, what?  I paid more attention to the dates and workout before going back and reading the comments, if I had done it in order, I would have been less confused.  🙂

Fallon, thanks for choosing McMillan Running to help you train optimally for your upcoming goal race. As you head into your San Luis Obispo Half Marathon training program, remember that recovery between key workouts is the key. If you simply perform the workouts and get to the race healthy, you give yourself the best chance at success. Consistent, smart training will produce the best results. Run hard, but run smart. Listen to your body to know when to push and when to rest. For each workout in your plan, there is a corresponding training pace listed in the McMillan Running Calculator (www.mcmillanrunning.com). I know you requested 8 weeks of training, but I wanted to give you a full 14 weeks so that you will have some guidelines over the next few weeks to help you transition into half-marathon specific training in the final 2 months before SLO.

14 weeks?  That’s a long time but the more I read it, the more I felt like it was doable.  Most of the runs are time based as opposed to distance based.   I’ve been transitioning to that since December so seeing that built into the plan was kind of awesome.   Specific speed work drills are built in, no paces but guidelines that I can follow and actually accomplish (fingers crossed).  Surf City 13.1 and Wine Country 13.1 are built into the plan as long training runs.   The weeks following those are built as recovery weeks. snapshotHmmm, I think I can do this.  I was actually super excited to start. Now, if only I was feeling 100%!  I am still coughing up a storm at night so I thought it would be smarter to only run 3x this week.  Boo!

Ever follow a McMillan plan? Or use their pace calculator?

Think I can stick to a plan?  Or will I slack off?

Standing is Not the Same

I survived!

Haha, but in all seriousness, this was a long week.  It also has had very little running so far.    Tuesday was taken up by prep and Wednesday the lovely test.    Tuesday was one of those times where I thought maybe I should be a morning runner- but nah- I like my sleep.   No solid food for almost 2 days and the horrible taste of the prep aside- the test was easy.  I went to sleep talking about my hair color and woke up in the recovery room.    My mother says I was a little hyped up from the meds they knocked me out with.   Apparently I reminded her of one of those funny internet videos.

Hmmm, I don't remember taking this
Hmmm, I don’t remember taking this

I took my running gear with me on Thursday hoping I would feel up to running but that may have been a little optimistic.   I felt super achy all day.  I don’t know if it was a side effect of the test or the biopsies but I just hurt.   I figured the smarter thing to do was rest.   Which ended up working out because my mom called needing me to run to the pharmacy for my dad.  He went for a hike and came back with a ton of ticks!!! Yuck!    Also, my mom is skeeved out about the 25K now.  He had hiked part of the course and I know he never sat down.   But late January should be fine tick wise… I hope.  Yuck again.

Last Sunday, when I was shopping I treated myself to a little gift.   I have been feeling a little uninspired and truthfully a little fluffy, so I picked up a new activity tracker, a Fitbit Flex.  Not a Fuelband this time, come on I went through 3 of those in less than 18 months.  Have you noticed you hardly ever hear about the Nike trackers anymore?   I really considered the Garmin Vivosmart and Vivofit but I was really only interested in step tracking and sleep tracking.   Plus it was kind of a steal as it was part of a Christmas sale.    So far I am liking the app interface as well.

Oh, that's not good
Oh, that’s not good

I really wish I could say the Fitbit was defective but I know I was just lying to myself.  I have worn it everyday since Monday and Monday was the only day I cleared 10,000 steps.   But even that doesn’t really count- it includes my 3.5 mile run.   Even if I cut myself some slack for Tuesday and Wednesday due to the test- that still leaves Thursday and Friday.  Did I mention I have a stand up desk?  Standing is not the same as walking!!!    I didn’t even clear 5000 steps on either day.  I don’t see how that is possible on a Friday, I felt busier than that.   Thursday, we were down two people and the number was still low.  Apparently I need to step it up.  Pun intended.  I kind of already knew this but seeing it spelled out on the phone means no more denial.   IMG_8168I’m all for being a Slacker but that’s just sad.  Oh, and as for sleep?  I’m averaging 6 hours a night.  Ouch.   The only thing I am successfully completing/ exceeding is the suggested water intake.

What stands out about your week?

Are you ready for Christmas?   I am so not.

Have you ever used a tracker? Thoughts?

A Week of Whine

Well, November is off to a roaring start.  Please read that with the heavy sarcasm intended.

I started to feel a little under the weather last week so I took Saturday off.    My stomach has decided to be a littlecrankier this week.  I must have jinxed myself.  Sunday’s planned 6 turned into a slower 3.5. However on the cooler side, I ran in pants and a short sleeve shirt.  I couldn’t tell you the last time I did that, it was odd.   But 3.5 is better than none, right?

Can you see the tiny deer?

And none is how the rest of this week has played out so far.   I was looking forward to getting going on my training plan.  Particularly now that I put my crazy plan out there in print.    Since daylight savings means I will be treadmill running during the week I decided that Mondays would be rest days.  The gym is always super busy on those days and since I would like to run trails every other weekend I figured Monday would make for a good rest day.  Of course that’s the only day I felt good.  Hindsight really is 20/20.

Tuesday and Wednesday were out due to my little bugger of a stomach.  Today I was gung ho, the gym was going to happen.      Then I got super dizzy at work, felt like I was running a fever and just felt wrong.    I didn’t even want to eat, which is odd for me, because I love eating.  I ended up going to lunch early and napped the entire time.     Once off work, it was home bound for me.   My poor gym bag has come into work everyday since Tuesday but never used.  😦   Well, I did pull out my long sleeve layer to use as a blanket while I napped but that doesn’t count.

A coworker thought this was amusing... and I had no running pictures. :(
A coworker thought this was amusing… and I had no running pictures.   😦

I am trying a whole mind over matter thing right now.   Work has been crazy busy this week with the emphasis on crazy.  I have never been one to believe in the “lunar effect” but the way people have been acting this week make me doubt my doubt.  Driving home seeing the almost full moon yesterday was like a light bulb moment.  Either that or I am grasping at straws.   My boss is going on vacation so sick is not really an option.  Oh and I have a 5k on Saturday.    “Rested” legs are a good thing right?  Oh well, at least it is for a good cause.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for listening to me whine.  🙂

Ok, how was your week?

Anyone racing this weekend?

Do you believe in the lunar effect?

Too Many Lightbulbs

Happy Thursday!!!  This post kind of ended up as a brain dump, so join me for a random ride.

Getting Nowhere-

Yesterday was my appointment at USC.   I was nervous going in.  I was afraid they were going to say there was something really wrong with me.  I equally afraid they were going to tell me that it was all in my head.   I was concerned they might tell me stop or cut back running.  What I wasn’t prepared for was a cranky older doctor with such a thick accent I asked him to repeat himself at times.    He implied that my current gastro is not the brightest and disregarded my previous diagnosis and 4-5 years of symptoms and focused only on those of the last 4 months.    He is sending a list of tests to my doctor for him to run.  One of them is something I have been asking for so I guess that’s a win.   Actually everyone there was a cranky pants.  They need to work on their bedside manner.10-9

Getting Slower-

I’m trying to adjust to the fact that 11-12 minute miles are my normal now.  And that sometimes even that normal is hard.  Today’s run was closer to 13.  Then again, it was 95º and I have had less than 9 hours of sleep in the last 48.  So I was happy to get it done and still felt good about it at the end.  Forward motion right?  On the downside, I ran the lake path on Tuesday and saw a sign saying they are closing the path.  Effective yesterday.  Boo.    I though at least another month before I lost it to darkness, now it’s gone so they can clean the lake bed.  But I did get one last day in the dirt to break in new toys.  Still more on that later.  🙂 trailshoes

Zombies-

Even though I have accepted that I need run slower right now, sometimes seeing it makes me cranky.  So I finally downloaded Zombies, Run as a distraction.  Yes, I am about a year behind on that.  It sounded silly but I thought why not.   It’s amusing and I found that listening to spoken words slows me down better than when I was pacing myself.   Apparently I need more brain power to process the story, ha!   It doesn’t require anything more than running and the story plays out in the background.    I also talk to it, oops.  So the character just survived a helicopter crash and is running for their lives.  But along they way they are supposed to pick up supplies.  Like batteries and water and first aid kits, etc.  Oh and underwear and sports bras.  Did I miss the part where I stole a horse and buggy to carry all this?!  The first run picked up 28 items.  How would a person carry all that and still out run a mob of hungry zombies?  Oh, and 4 of those items were boxes of light bulbs.  Maybe the runner wrapped them in the underwear and sports bras?  Otherwise how are they not just shards of glass?    Ok, maybe I am thinking too much about this.  😛  But like I said, it’s a distraction.IMG_6677

#bakingfail-

I saw a recipe for Halloween Bark over at backatsquarezero.com.   Let me preface this by saying I have no talent in the kitchen.  None.  But this only had 3 ingredients, I thought I could make that.  Yeah, umm no.  Did you know chocolate could burn?  In a microwave?  I didn’t.   After that I had to scale back the amount I was making.    I sort of stumbled through the rest.  The end result- not pretty.  But damn tasty!  I took it to work and we ate all of it.   🙂

So what random thing did you do this week?

Ready for the weekend?  Anyone racing?

Ever run with Zombies?

Have any baking tips for dummies?
