Ventura Marathon-Half- Recap

I had a feeling this post may border on wordy which is why most of the pictures were uploaded in the last post.   Now for what those photos didn’t show.

The Weekend-

I was able to get off work a couple hours early on Friday, so I headed straight home to finish packing and preparing.  I felt like I was both taking too much and not enough at the same time.   My mother and I headed out early Saturday morning, we planned on spending some time at the Ventura Mall before heading to packet pick up and the hotel.   I haven’t been in a mall in years and well it was kind of a let down.   The only upside was a Hot Topic for my inner nerd and I may have spent a little too much at Macy’s (damn Dooney!).  From there it was on to the hotel.

When I booked the hotel I looked for one that advertised as being near to the pier.  It didn’t occur to me to compare the addresses until 2 weeks ago.  Oops.  But I lucked out, the hotel was 1.2 miles from the pier on the same street and right next door to an In n Out, and I was able to get chocolate milk from the 7-11 across the street.  Sweet!   Dinner was at BJ’s Restaurant, where I indulged in a pretty good burger and fries.   That was followed by a 3.5 mile walk down to and around the pier to get my legs moving before trying to get some sleep.

Once checking out of the hotel on Sunday, we headed back to Santa Barbara for a little more shopping.   I was looking forward to a real Lululemon and just some window shopping.  The weather in Santa Barbara was amazing.   After that it was north to SLO for dinner and then finally home.  We were tired.

Not much to say here.  Packet pickup was a breeze, both easy and super windy.  Instead of a bunch of useless samples in the bag, they had a table or 2 of samples.   I only took a sample of KT tape.   The website looked like there would be a lot of vendors but most seemed more like local crafts and things.  Kind of like a farmer’s market minus the food.   I stopped by the ProCompression booth but there was no one working it?  There was live music playing and a little listening area as well.  A very nice (cute) police officer took a picture for us, but my mother deleted it- so there’s a selfie instead.  🙂

The Race-

Race morning dawned and I had no need of an alarm.   I hadn’t slept well the night before and had been awake off and on from about 3 on.   I wasn’t feeling so great but that wasn’t too surprising to me.    I had packed some candy corns for race fuel but they sounded nasty so I did not even take them.  I got ready and headed out the door, I had planned on walking to starting line.    While I was walking there the marathon runners were running up the other side.   They looked so ready to go,  to the point that 3 were bouncing basketballs while running.   Seriously?  It’s all I can do to run a half marathon and you are going to bounce a basketball (or 2!) while running 26.2!!!IMG_6222

Anywho, I made my way up to the starting line in time to jump into the first wave.  A few announcements and count down and we were off!    I had issues getting both my Garmin and my Nike+ app started but managed to get them going not too far from the starting line.    I was aiming for a 10:00 average so when mile 1 came in at 9:50, I was ok with that.  Mile 2 seemed a little tougher and fell to 10:17.   I was using intervals of 8:30 run and 1:00 walk as I knew going in I wasn’t 100%.  Even with this I was tiring quickly.  The weather felt way warmer than I would have liked.   The course went through a nice housing area before going back to the main street.  It turned off towards the harbor for a quick out and back to add mileage before heading back down the main street into Oxnard and out into some fields before turning around and going back the way we came.  Mile 5- I took 2 walk breaks, I was having trouble getting my breathing under control.   I had already used my inhaler 3 times.  Which was odd because I hadn’t used it on any run since my last half marathon in July.   I kept trucking along until my next walk break at mile 6.5.  Which is where I had to get real.

I only ran once in taper week leading up to the race.  It was 3.5 miles and it was the hardest run I have ever done.   I mentioned briefly that I had finally started my antibiotics.  Between those and my lovely stomach I was thisclose to deferring Ventura.  I was feeling so crappy.   I told myself I was being a big baby and would be fine.  In reality I had no business running a half marathon at this time.   Mile 6.5 was the beginning of this epiphany (and others but more about that later).

I walked it in from there.  I called my mom at mile 7.5 and told her she had more time to relax at the hotel because I wasn’t going to be near 2:10:00.    I just kept walking.  I was so hot, my hamstrings were cramping, and my left shin felt super angry.    I took 2 cups of water at every aid station.  One to drink and one to dump over my head.  I alternated my Gatorade and their water to stay hydrated.   I had Honey Stingers in my belt but the very idea of those made me ill.   I grabbed a Cliff Shot around mile 9 and carried it for a while.  I eventually ripped it open around mile 11.  I had somehow managed to grab one with caffeine and I was hoping it would help the lungs.   I know it didn’t have enough caffeine to do anything but one can hope right.    I jogged a tiny bit each mile both to keep the pace below 14:00 and to loosen up my stiff legs.   The volunteers and the crowd support was pretty awesome.  Around mile 11.5, there was a little boy dressed as the Flash giving high fives. The last 2.5 miles or so I was keeping pace with a women who was race walking and a guy who would run ahead and then walk.  I always caught him on the walking portions.  I couldn’t tell if he was doing intervals or if he was as spent as I was.  I never saw the 13 mile marker but did see the 26 one.  I figured I could run the last .2.   Ha!  That was the longest .2 of my life.  I thought the finish line was never going to arrive.   I did leave race walker and interval guy behind.   Finally there was the finish line and I was done.  Half marathon #9 complete, not my best, not my slowest but probably the most walking.   I won’t lie, I did get a little teary eyed at the finish.  Thank goodness for sunglasses.Ventura Marathon Results

Since I had finished later than planned, I barely had time to limp back to the hotel to shower and check out.  I hurt badly.  I don’t think I have been that sore after a race since my very first half marathon.  I gimped the 1.2 miles back to the hotel, stopping to stretch along the way.   The chocolate milk in the mini fridge was the best thing ever.   After checking out, we hit In n Out for food.  I was suddenly hungry.   Finding out that they still sold extra large drinks was the second best thing ever- that Diet Coke tasted amazing.   I did feel bad for my mom though, she had to be seen in public with me- jean shorts, teal tank and bright purple compression socks.  I was styling, ha!

So no, this race did not go according to plan but it was still a good weekend.  Shopping was fun, the food was yummy.  I also learned that I have serious problems tolerating humidity (74% WTH?!).  I got a few compliments during the race about my use of neon and I got a shout out from a fellow SLO ambassador when she ran by me.   So while I am rethinking some things, I still call this weekend a win.  🙂

How do some of you deal with humidity on a regular basis?  Seriously, anything over 25% is rough for me.  Maybe I am spoiled?

Ventura Goals

My next half is only 2 sleeps away!  I am leaving for Ventura tomorrow morning.  Half marathon #9 is on Sunday. 🙂

With my recent rough patch, I have readjusted my goals for this race.  When I first signed up back in June I was hoping that the flat course would help with my goal of breaking 2:00 for a half marathon.   While that would be amazing, I don’t feel I am in the position to do that right now.  Frankly, I don’t think I should even try.    So in an effort to be smart, I have a new goal this weekend- have fun.   Plus this will be a race weekend of firsts-

  • First race I travel to

  • First race out of the county

  • First time sleeping in a hotel in I have no idea how long

  • First time eating dinner somewhere random pre race?

I am heading down tomorrow morning and dragging my mother along with me.   We are planning on getting in some shopping at the mall before picking up my packet and checking into the hotel.    I also don’t remember the last time I was in a mall.   With those plans I will be breaking quite a few pre-race rules.   Which helps the choice to just have fun.  Now I would like to have fun and still be around 2:10 but it will all depend on how I feel.   I ran that in SLO with hills, so fingers crossed.

I got off a few hours early today so I had plenty of time to pack.  Packing is stressful!  I am only going for 2 days/ 1 night and I feel like I am both packing too much and not enough.    I have had my race outfit planned for a while but am still taking extra shorts and compression socks.  Maybe I will change my mind?  Who knows.   I am looking forward to hitting the expo too.  The race sounds like one giant beach party, so yay!Ventura beach party

I also updated my playlist.  I am in weird mood, so it is kind of all over the place.  Some good stuff, some bad.  🙂   Headphones are discouraged but I am not at the point where I can run without music.  The site recommends only running with one in and I already do that anyways.  Plus I still like hearing Mr. Nike chime in with how I am doing.  Yes, my Garmin buzzes but I like hearing it too.  I tried to take a screenshot of it, but apparently I don’t know how to get the whole thing in one image, oops.

Rock’n Around the Pier 13.1- Recap

The one where I went into damage control at mile 3.  😦

If 2013 was the year of the PR, then 2014 is shaping up to be the year of the bonk.  At least as far as half marathons are concerned.   But I have to say that this is first race I ever seriously considered quitting.  Even when I ran out steam at mile 7.5 at SLO, I still knew I was going to finish, it was just going to be slow.IMG_5481

For once, I felt like I slept really well the night before this race. I woke up on time and made it to pick up NikeC by 5:30.  My stomach was being its usual self, so I did not eat prior to the race.  This is typical though, so I don’t think it affected me too much.   Parking was easy but time-consuming, the race was smaller than last year, it had about 200 for the half marathon and just under 1000 for the 10K, but parking was limited.  Once parked, we geared up, met up with NikeC’s friend and headed to the bathroom.  Which was where we were when the starting gun went off.    Last year I was still running to the chute when the gun went off, oops.  Thank goodness for chip timing.   We made our way to the chute and were off.IMG_5447

Slowly as there were 100 yards of softer sand to get through at the beginning.  Once on the hard pack, it was easier to run.  I lost both of them fairly quickly.  One moment they were to my left and then they were gone.   Last year’s race was overcast, this year the sun was shining and the ocean was gorgeous.  Last years 10K went so well (easy) that I had minor hopes for a birthday PR but I knew my speed was iffy thanks to my month of stomach issues.   Realistically, though, I was aiming for under 2:10.  So all I had to do was stay under a 10 minute mile- I got that right?  Ummm…IMG_5457

Mile 1- 9:45 -ok, slower than I’d like but there was soft sand
Mile 2-9:45– hmmm felt way faster than that, but consistent at least.  If only this stomach cramp would go away.
Mile 3- 9:51 felt like I had already run the full 13, shifted to a run/ walk method
Mile 4– 10:02 I just choked on air, walk break, take a few pictures.  Now the cramp is on the other side.
Mile 510:09 Wheezing, need air, where’s my inhaler?  Yes nice man in front of me I see the dolphins (which now I think was awesome but then, not so much.)
Mile 6- 9:47 I refuse to hit the turnaround (10K) past the hour mark, pick it up!
6.2 mark– Turn around 59:08-Man, I wish I was doing the 10K.
Mile 7-10:18  oh, my god, why is this so hard
Mile 810:24– my run .9/ walk .1 is falling apart, walking more often and longer
Mile 911:09 another sudden need for my inhaler. Man the water is so much closer now.
Mile 1011:25 oh hell, I could take my shoes and socks off and just walk leisurely back to the finish.  I’m mostly walking anyways.  Oh fisherman, please don’t cast your reel at me, that would hurt.
Mile 1112:15 Oh, what hell is this?  To make 13.1, we had to go up through the dunes to run a mile on a paved path.  I could have crawled faster through the sand. Is it hot? Why am I so hot?
Mile 12- 11:57  Made it to a 9:20 pace on the pavement, soft sand on the way back to the beach brought me back down.
Mile 1311:15  Why is this mile so long!!  I feel like I have been staring at the finish line in the distance forever.   Ugh, just keep running.

Finish- 2:20:21   Ouch.  Literally and figuratively.   My calves were on fire.  Even with running in compression socks, I was so sore by the time I crossed the finish line.  My chip was cut off as I was handed my medal.  It’s freakin’ awesome!  That helped alleviate some of my irritation.   I drank some water and chatted with my family while waiting for NikeC to finish.

Running a race with a friend was awesome.  It was great at the starting line, and we passed each other twice on the course which was a great little pick-me-up.  The finish line was fun too.  I am looking forward to our next race.  🙂IMG_5533

The race course itself was amazing.   Blue skies and blue ocean, and the beach, come on.  Seagulls and dolphins, too.   Given how close the water was on the way back, I understood the early start time more.   There was plenty of water stops.   They had volunteers directing where to turn around and when to turn off the beach.   My only 2 slight negatives were- no on course bathrooms, and I never saw a mile marker.    Now I was pretty much head down in misery from mile 3 on but I still think I would have seen at least one.  As for bathrooms, I realize that it was on the beach and I have never used a bathroom during a race but it’s nice to know they are there if you need one.IMG_5465

For the cost of this race, 50 bucks!, the swag was amazing and I think the medal may be my new favorite.  Plus there was live music and an amazing breakfast buffet at the finish line, eggs, sausage, orange juice, etc.   I only wish I felt like trying some of it.IMG_5459

We headed out shortly after that.     I was having a little shindig that evening for my birthday that I had to get ready for.    Yesterday I was oddly sore in weird places.  My butt and my lower back hurt, guess I ran differently on the sand this time than previous races.

Overall, this race was part of a great day.  Yes, I was seriously disappointed in my performance but hey, I didn’t quit!  I need to figure out what is going with my stomach so I can get back to speed work.   Right now I have no idea how ever ran a 2:05 let alone trying to fathom breaking 2:00.  My next half is in 8 weeks, and it’s flat and paved, so fingers crossed, my time will start heading in the right direction.

Wild Run 5K recap

I hope everyone had a good 4th of July!

Wild Run 5K brought a couple of firsts for me. One was a rare opportunity due to the race size and something I never thought would happen. What I am most proud of was that I ran a smart race from start to finish-negative splits and all.

Choosing the Wild Run 5k, I knew it was going to be a smaller race and I was a little leery considering the past experiences that I had with races put on by this gym. However, I was pleasantly surprised-for the most part. Packet pick up was a breeze on Thursday. Parking was in the zoo parking lot so super simple. Previous races by this gym had a spray painted starting line, a megaphone start, and an orange cone finish line. So I was impressed to see tents set up, an emcee leading a warm up and a designated start. Granted it was pop-up tent but still a huge improvement. There were about 100 runners for the 10k and 5K combined. A little smaller than even I was previously thinking. The only glitch I saw prior to the race was the start time. I had confirmed that the start time for the 5K was 8:10 but the schedule on the board said 8:30. Umm? Turns out 8:10 was correct.IMG_5331

It was go time and we were off. After looking at the map the previous night, I saw that the first ½ mile of the race had a hill and the last ¾ of a mile were on the lake path that I run. Everything in between was a mystery but for the most part was pretty flat.   I started off in the middle of the pack like I always do. We ran through the parking lot to the lot of the baseball field nearby and then up the street. We were still running in a pack when we hit the hill.   It wasn’t the elevation, less 100 ft., but it was short and vertical.   I walked near the top. .3 miles in and I was walking, waah. It was short, about 20 seconds and then I was running again.   I pulled away from the pack and there were only a couple people in front of me. I figured that wouldn’t last long so I may as well enjoy it. After that small hill, it was flat, yay! My watch buzzed at mile 1 -9:37. Ouch, I knew I wasn’t in top shape speed wise, but I was hoping for better than that. I knew I could pick it up so I that is what I tried to do. I kept a guy pushing stroller in my sights. He seemed super comfortable at that pace so I knew I probably couldn’t catch him so I tried to always be able to see him.  IMG_5374

I heard someone coming up behind me and that gave me the incentive to run faster. They fell back and I kept going. Rounding a corner I found the only water station but I didn’t need it. I managed to pass a guy in blue shirt here. I just kept watching stroller guy. We went right and there were some rolling hills. The elevation was almost negligible it was just that there was like 6 of them in a row. Stroller guy got farther away. No! So I picked it up again. Mile 2-9:00.   A little more street and we were back to the lake path. I knew the path well so I was hoping to pick it up but I wasn’t going to look at my watch again. This was also where I started to realize that no one had passed me yet, I also hadn’t seen another woman since the start of the race. As I was coming up on one of the bridges on the trail, a biker rode past me and then the 10K leader thundered past.   I got hung up right before the bridge, 2 women and 4 dogs were in the path. I had to walk the little bridge until I got around them.   Then I had like .3 of a mile to go. My goal was to finish strong and not let anyone pass me.   Usually I am dragging and breathing hard by the end of a 5K but I felt like I had the energy for a final kick, so I kicked. Mile 3- 8:30.

Hot damn, that’s a new PR! Not by much, but it still counts.   Here’s where it got really interesting. I was the first female 5K finisher. What?!   Seriously?   How is that possible? Another woman finished about a minute behind me. She looked hardcore, how did I pull this off? I was super excited and a little bit in shock. I realize that it’s because it was such a small race but it’s still a huge pick me up after I had a few rough races.

While waiting for the awards ceremony, we got to cheer on the other runners coming in.   There were people finishing for the 10K, 5K and 1 mile.   The kids running were so adorable.   But hands down the coolest finisher was an 85 year old woman with a walker. She completed the 1 mile course. Talk about awesome.

This is also where they kind of fell apart. They were having computer issues so the awards were delayed; so delayed that quite a few people went home. When they finally started announcing, there were so few people there. The awards were for 1-3 male and female for each race. When they announced my name they also announced my time as 24:48. Ha! I wish!IMG_5379

Even with it’s little issues, it was a good race and a fun morning.  Well outside of one thing.  For whatever reasons, my iPhone had a little glitch. I ran the entire 5K with one song playing repeatedly.  27 minutes of Wrecking Ball over and over and over.  I deserve props for not chucking my phone.  I came pretty close.  🙂
