The Weight on my Shoes

Thursday’s run hurt.

My calves were tight and my arches were sore and achy.  I think my PureFlow 4’s are dead.  Which is not cool as they only have 146 miles on them.  I think… I lost most of my shoe data when Nike updated their running app.  Boo.   But they felt dead on my run and since is my third pair of them, I am pretty familiar with the signs of a dead shoe.

So now what?  I am not hugely fond of the 5’s I have been testing.  Granted, I’ve only put 5 miles total on them.  The toebox feels small- which I usually like- but the ankle area feels very floppy.    I tried re-lacing them on my last run in them but they still felt off.  No bloody heels though, so that was a plus.

So while I was running, ok well, taking lots of walk breaks, I was thinking.   I’ve dropped thoughts about my weight recently- this still isn’t that post- but what if my weight is affecting my shoes?

Am I too large for my shoes?

I am honestly wondering this not trying to stir anything up.  When I was heavier I ran in support shoes.  Over the years as I both ran more and lost weight, my shoes kept getting lighter and with a smaller heel toe drop.  And things were mostly fine.   But now, I am heavier than I want to be by a decent amount.  Let’s be real, I am closer to the weight I was when I first started running than I am to when I was at peak fitness  2 years ago.    Could that be affecting my shoes?

I know the weight affects my form at times.  Especially if I wear the wrong pair of shorts on a run.   It could have all the markings of a great run but the wrong shorts right now will turn it to a crap storm real fast.   Which then throws off my stride.  So why couldn’t that be happening with my shoes?

Problem is that I don’t know how to test this little theory of mine.    I mean I could by another pair of shoes but all this shoe buying is getting a little expensive.  I am hesitant to return the PureFlow 5’s as I’ve only put 5 miles on them.   It took me 20+ to break in the teal pair of 4’s that I had but then I put another 200ish miles on them.    The last pair of normal running shoes-i.e more support- I owned was well over a year ago.  I actually gave them to my mother to be gardening shoes.  So that’s out as an option too.

Then on Saturday, I ran 8 miles in my Nike’s and my legs felt better than they have in weeks.   They have even less to them than my Brooks.  But, I was also in compression socks.  Is it all in my head?!?!

I would love to say I as going to lose the weight and all would return to normal.  But again, let’s be real, I’ve trying that for a year and failing in numerous ways.   So now what?

Help me, blog land, you’re my only hope!!!

Week 7 Training Recap

Upcoming Races– SLO Marathon- Half

Focus– Recovery

This will be a quick recap.   This week shaped up a little fluffier than planned.   Not a lot of exercise but eating like I ran a marathon.  Or 2.   Oddly, I was fine during race weekend and even Disneyland.  It wasn’t until Tuesday that I went off the rails.  A post race week combined with hormones = #eatallthethings.

Monday- Disneyland!!  According to my Up band, we walked around 7 miles that day.  Not too bad.   My legs held up pretty well, I didn’t really feel sore from Surf City but there were moments my mother left me in the dust.  Mostly going up, walking up to Super Hero HQ was a little rough.😁

Tuesday- Rest My chest was hurting pretty badly on Tuesday.  I had the day off and thought about riding the bike or going for a short run but decided to pass on it.  Instead I caught up on all the laundry from the weekend and worked on some computer issues that I had been having.   The computer is fixed but I want to throw my printer out the window.

Wednesday- Rest  Back at work and I had a meeting a few towns south in the morning.  I kind of feel like I spent the day driving all over the county, so it was a planned rest day.   Plus my chest was still sore.

Thursday- 12 miles stationary   I had packed my running gear and was looking to try for a short run after work.   I still felt a little bruised but nothing like the past few days.    However a dense marine layer rolled in around closing time so I took it as as a sign to not push my lungs.   I headed home for the bike instead.

Friday- Rest   Like always. 😛

Saturday- Shoes!  With spring races on the horizon and big plans for the summer, I need to figure out my shoe situation.   While my Pure Flow’s aren’t making me bleed anymore, they are not making my feet happy either.   My left foot in particular.    With that in mind, I headed down to SLO for a little bit of shopping and ended up at the Running Warehouse.     Uh oh.   It was busy but someone was able to help me fairly quickly.  I’m horrible because I don’t remember his name!  After explaining all the issues I had been having lately, he brought out 3 pairs of shoes for me to try- New Balance Vazee Pace, Saucony Kinvara 6 and the Pure Flow 5’s.

The New Balance felt great when I was sitting but horrible once I stood up and walked around.   The Kinvara’s were super snug.   I didn’t want to go up a size because I regret it every time I do.  The newer Pure Flow’s were odd.  They are firmer than they used to be.  I didn’t feel any pinching in the heel and the arch support felt ok but the tongue was ridiculous!  It’s harder now so it felt like a piece of plastic digging into my ankle.  What is with that?!   Based on what I liked and didn’t like, he then brought out a pair of Brooks Launch 3’s.    They felt the best out everything but they still felt like a lot of shoe.   I’ve really liked the lower heel- toe drop of the Pure Flow 4’s and the smaller foot print of the toe box.    He then brought out a pair of Nike’s- the Free Run Distance.  Say what?  

I’ve tried on numerous pairs of Nike’s over the years and hated every single one.  Which is odd since all my tennis shoes were Nike’s.   I was predisposed to hate this pair, then I put it on.   Holy crap, it felt like a slipper.   Snug but not tight and with a 4mm drop.   Now, it felt great in the store but running could be a different story.  But it was the best fit and I ended up leaving with my first pair of Nike running shoes.

Oh and I had dvr’ed the marathon trials and watched them that night.  How awesome was that?  Shalane and Amy were amazing and the perfect example of #runningrelationshipgoals.  

Sunday- 6 miles  First run in a week and it was rough.   I was hoping that all the extra rest would have helped my lungs but not so much.     My training plan called for a 90 minute progression run but I had mentally changed that to an easy 8 since I wasn’t feeling great since the race and hadn’t run.   I started out the run in my new shoes but knew I might end up looping back to the house if they didn’t work.  Usually I try to break in my shoes with 3-4 mile runs.  My warm up walk was a little longer than usual and felt pretty good but running was hard.  I was huffing and puffing a mile in.   I wasn’t wheezing, it just felt like it was harder to get in a decent amount of air.  I ran slowly and took regular walk breaks.  I called it at 6, I didn’t have another 2 in me today.   The shoes felt pretty good.  I started the run with some soreness and twinging in my left knee but that’s been there since Thursday.  It actually got better by the end of the run.    They held up well today but I am cautious to see how they do once I run in them more.

So this week ended up being on the lazier side of recovery with only 2 workouts.   But I am ok with that as I needed a wake up call to make me go to the doctor and Surf City was that call.  My appointment is Monday and I am really hoping that it is something that can fixed fairly quickly.   Fingers crossed!  I am trying not to plan to far ahead into next week until I hear what he has to say.

A new pair of the same shoes that leaves you bloody?

Great choices, right?

Ok, backing up.   This is week is a mess of doctor’s appointments so I was keeping my running plan fluid but since Monday was appointment #1 I figured it would be a rest day.  Plus Monday workouts rarely work in my favor.   Except the late afternoon appointment went faster than I thought it would.  Driving home I realized I had enough time to change super quickly and get in a run outside before it got dark.   Since I still don’t feel 100% I figured any more ventures into running in the dark would wait until next week.    I changed as fast as I could and was out the door.

My right shoe had felt off on Sunday’s walk but I figured I was cold and just getting over my sickness so I was probably walking weird.   I didn’t think about it until I was about 5 minutes from my house.  You know the feeling when you have a sticker or a burr in your sock?  That’s what it felt like.  1/2 mile in, I stopped at the top of a hill to adjust my sock and check it out…holy crap- blood!

My sock was bloody and there was a large red spot on my new shoes.  Well, crap, that’s not good.   I sat for a moment and debated what to do.   I didn’t see a blister, just a tiny hole.  Hmm.  I put my shoe back on and ran another half mile.  I stopped and checked again,  Hey look, blood was now down the inside of my shoe.   Ok, I get it, time to call it.  I rerouted to home.

A 1.51 mile run is better than none right?  Except I didn’t like that.  So after a quick clean up, a sock change, I slapped on a band-aid and my old shoes and was out the door again.  I figured I had enough daylight for another 1.5 mile loop but I decided to run it backwards.   My foot felt ok so I added on a little more.  😃  2.19 miles for a total of 3.7 for the day.   I’m calling that a win in my book.  ✅  And that last 2.19 miles felt pretty good.   It was a great run mentally speaking.

  

What was not great was that 2 miles in old shoes was enough to make the arches of my feet start to ache.  Which was why I switched to the new shoes.  They are the same brand and model just a different color.   I have never had a blister problem in any shoe.  Any time I ever felt even the slightest hot spot it meant I needed new shoes or new socks.  A quick switch and the problem was solved.  So now what?

I have an 8.2 mile race on Saturday, I already knew it was going to be rough, being so undertrained and after a week of being sick.  I wasn’t anticipating pain with most of my steps though.  I don’t spend most of my time in the air like Usain Bolt.  😝  Do I wear the old shoes and suffer arch pain?  Do I wear the new shoes and hope for less bleeding?    I have an old pair of Mizuno’s but they made my knees and left calf hurt.  It’s why I switched to the Pure Flow’s.    I’ve even considered wearing my trail shoes.

So, in short- HELP!  Any tips on blisters?  Actually it still doesn’t look like a blister but that’s not the point.  Any suggestions on how to make the new shoes work?  Or should I run in the old ones?  So many questions!

A Few of my Favorite Things

Jumping on the bandwagon here!     And multitasking for the win. 😃    If you’re reading this on a computer, you may have noticed  a menu item called “Goals and Gears” up there to the left?  No?  Well, that’s good then as I forgot all about it and hadn’t updated it in about a year.   Ooof, it was rough.   As I was working on updating it, I realized it could be tied in with the holiday season.  🎁  Gift guides are the all rage right now so why not join in?     And if you’re looking for more details on my favorite things, check out my new page- The Slacker Runs With.

As runners we can all list things we would like to have, things we want, things we desperately need, etc.  I like learning what other runners love  though, what is their tried and true and keeps them running everyday?    There must be a reason right?  So before we get to the wants, how about-

A few of my favorite things-

Shoes– Can’t run without those!

Brooks Pure Flow 4 – current fave with no aches or pains
Mizuno Wave Hayate-   For those times I want to hit the trails.

Socks– Did you know some people run without socks?  How does that even work?

I love my Pro Compression socks.  I’ve always been a bright and funky sock person and rock knee socks on a regular basis so these were just a match made in heaven.  Compression, knee high and awesome patterns? Sold!

Skirts– I never thought I would run in a skirt but I gave it a shot and they rock.  My favorites are both by LululemonPace Rival II and Pleat to Street.   I thought the pleats would drive me batty but then I discovered that there are 5 pockets. 5!   I also love their Speed shorts for training.

Lulu, PRO Compression, Sunski’s Fitletic all in one shot!

Belt  Fitletic I’ve owned 3 of these belts.  I’ve tried many others but I always come back to to Fitletic.  I hate bounce and wear my belt super low (like butt lift low- I got that comment at a race once😉) and this works great.  It fits everything I need and I can attach my pepper spray to it as well.

Hydration

For most runs, I grab whatever water bottle is nearest to me but for races I carry my own sports drink in an Ultimate Direction Jenny Handy 10oz.    I tend to over hydrate in races so this smaller size works for me. For hikes and trail runs, I have a Nathan Fire Catcher.   I don’t have a bladder for it, I just rely on the 2 10oz bottles in the front.

As for that sports drink- I love Skratch Labs.  I love the orange hydration mix.  Yum.  🙂  Plus it’s fun to say.  For some reason my mother finds it hilarious when I say I am out of Skratch.

WatchGarmin Forerunner 220.  I love numbers and everything it tracks.  Truthfully it probably tracks way more than I know.  I wish they still made real user manuals.  Am I showing my age here?

Sunglasses–  Sunskis  I have really poor eyesight and issues handling too much brightness so shades are a must.  I also tend to destroy sunglasses very quickly.   I love Sunski’s.  Polarized, very affordable and cool looking too?  Score!  And both pairs lasted at least a year.  Win in my book!

Security

Road ID– I don’t carry my ID when I run.  I misplace my debit card all the time, my license would probably run away just as quick.   This bracelet has my name, 2 emergency contacts and any medical alerts I might need them to know.    Stylish and smart all at the same time.  😃

Pepper spray–  Always be prepared.  You never know what you may run into.  They even make stylish colors now.  😊

Other ideas- Wants-

A new PR–  but we can only give that to ourselves, right?

Race entries–  We love our bling but those shiny medals cost a pretty penny- anything helps.  😝

Awesome running shirts–  In the last year, I’ve come to love shirts with sayings on them- inspirational and funny alike.  The internet is full of them.  My favorite?  Check out Pavement Runner and the #WeRunSocial gear.

So, Brooks is doing this #thankyourunning campaign on social media.  It’s kind of cool.  Funny thing is that I’ve had parts of this post sitting in my drafts for a while.  Except I was calling something like Lessons from Running.  Deep right?  Anyways, I figured now would be a good time to dust it off and pretty it up.  So here goes-

Thank you running-

I have discovered so many cool and scenic places that I never would have seen without a pair of running shoes on my feet.   And you know where most of them are?  Right in my own backyard.    At most a short drive and I can just take in the view.   Mountains, ocean, dirt and asphalt, all are within reach.    All very run-able.    All awesome.  Thank you running for showing me the view. 

Thank you running-

For reminding me I can do hard things.  I’ve been a procrastinator all my life.   Sometimes I think it’s because I work better under pressure.  Mostly though it’s that I’m just lazy.    My second race ever was a half marathon.  I crossed the finish line in pain and exhausted but damn proud that I committed to a goal I had made on a street corner on a cold morning in January.    As I stood there spectating and seeing the people running Surf City, I told myself that I wanted to do that.  I wasn’t sure if I could but I was going to try.     I crossed of the finish line of Wine Country half in April.  I was in pain, exhausted and damn proud that I had followed through.    Later on one friend commented that they were surprised that I had both completed the race and stuck (sort of) to a training plan.   Thank you running for showing me that I can.

Thank you running-

For letting me be comfortable by myself.     I dislike crowds but hated being by myself.  I always felt so needy and worried that I was going to be left behind.    I’m not even sure who was doing the leaving but it made me anxious.   Running was something I had to start on my own, no one was pushing me out the door, no one was meeting me out there.  Running can involve spending a whole lot of time getting to know yourself and suddenly you realize your own bullshit and that it’s time to move on.  Not saying everything’s awesome now but I have a better acceptance for who I am and I am fine on my own.   I love my friends but thank you running for helping me like myself.

That said, friends are awesome.

I have become a little less of a germ-a-phobe.  Seriously it was borderline OCD.    My hand washing alone would drive  my mother crazy when she observed it.    I’ve had GI issues for years but a port-a-potty or gas station bathroom?  Oh hell no.   I admit my first trail bathroom scared the hell out of me.    As we all know, when running we have to take what we can get.  Right?  😃   Along those same lines- I never left the house in anything that resembled exercise clothes- I had to be in jeans or a dress.  There was no other option.  Period.  Now?  5 mile run? Why not run errands after?  Just throw a sweater on.  Thank you running for making me get over myself.

For giving me some truly odd music taste.    It wasn’t too long after I started running that I discovered I have a hard time running to rock music.  My cadence kept getting thrown off by the bass line.   Enter some truly annoying pop.   Think I’m kidding?  I ran yesterday’s intervals to “Gotta Be Me”- it’s a Disney channel song.    All laughing aside- there is no way you can run slowly to that song.   Which is the point.  I dare you to try it.    So thank you running for making me laugh even if it’s at myself.

Thank you running-

For calming me down.  Seriously, I have a short fuse.    I could stay mad and resentful for eons.  Little things would piss me off.    The string of words I could put together would make a trucker blush.   While I think commuting has  also helped; running has gone a long way to calming me down.  It takes a lot to make me mad these days.    Thank you running for making me less “Hulk” like.

For you!!!!!  Without running, I never would have started reading blogs, never would have started this blog or “met” all of you.  Seriously you all rock.  I love reading about your adventures- running and non running.   You’re all real and inspirational and amazing.   Thank you running for expanding my circle.
