Feeling the Need…To be Stupid

I stopped speed work a few weeks ago when I started feeling tightness in my hamstring.   After some slower weeks, and more stretching, I figured I would give it a shot.  The plan called for 6-8 400 repeats with a 200 m recovery jog in between.  Followed by 3 200m strides with a 200 recovery in between, all sandwiched between a 15 minute warmup and 15 minute cool down.  That sounded like too much of a push so I adapted it some- you know Slacker Style.   🙂IMG_9632My warm up turned into just over 16 minutes as I ran through a horde of gnats.  I then ran while flailing my arms around my face trying to disperse them.  Yuck!!    Oh well, the people in the playground area probably had a good laugh.    Since I was running the intervals at the lake path I figured I would run the intervals on the back side of the lake and take a longer recovery on the front side when running through the parking lot and playground area.  I completed 4 400m intervals and 3 200m strides.  Except the lake path isn’t the track and I don’t know how to program that into my Garmin so it was actually 4 1/4 mile repeats and 3 .12 mile strides.   That is what my brain was capable of computing.  🙂

So for my 1/4 mile intervals I hit 2:04, 2:08, 2:16, 1:59– 8:00-8:24 pace.

My strides (.11-.13 miles) came in at :49, :59, :59—7:32-7:58 pace.

I also didn’t check what pace I should have been doing so there was less pressure on me.   Which was a good thing because for a 1:59:00 half I should have been hitting 1:30 for each 400, ouch.   And when I plug in my last half, I should have been hitting 1:46.  Double ouch.   Whatever, the paces I hit were still faster paces than I have been hitting lately.  Bonus was that my hamstring never complained while running or later that evening.    I wasn’t all out sprinting ever, I made sure to keep my breathing fairly steady and I didn’t want to aggravate my left leg.  So I am happy with how my return to speed work went.  I was super excited that I finally hit 5 miles at 49:30, I was under 50 minutes for the first time in months, but I hit lap instead of stop on my Garmin.  Boo!!!

On to Thursday
On to Thursday
Stupid!!
Stupid!!

Thursday was supposed to be an easy run.  I was looking forward to both the easy pace and that I had a half day so I was able to head to the river path to get in a run.    It was a little warm but there was a pretty good breeze.   I really do like that path, it has black top, concrete and dirt.  It’s a good mix.  There are more than a few intersections (housing tracks) to cross but most of the cars always let me cross first.  Even when I would like the break.  🙂     I had a problem with the easy part though.   Stupid, stupid, stupid.  I should have been aiming for a 10:45 average this close to a race.   What do I do?  Run an 8:26 mile.  Seriously!?  Yes, I know I should have slowed down but once I was part way through, I wanted to finish it.   Stupid.   What was I thinking?

So, yeah, I was a little sore today.   I made sure to stretch and ice a bit.  I wore compression socks inside my boots as well- pinstripe dress and argyle compressions socks.  I’m so stylish.    Then again who dressed me for Thursday’s run-

Not even close!
Not even close!

Stupidity aside, I am looking forward to the race.  I am not treating it like a race but a long run.    Just with a couple hundred friends and aid stations along the way.   I love this race and I say this knowing the hill at the end will kick my ass, just like it has before.     I like to call it the death hill, partly because of its’ incline and partly because it’s at mile 12.       It’s time to add a new wine glass to my collection, too bad I don’t drink.    🙂   I just wish I didn’t have such a busy day tomorrow.   With work and errands and packet pick up, I already feel short on time.  Crap- I need to go to sleep!

For reasons why I am so nostalgic about Wine Country, read here and here.

Who else is racing this weekend? If you’re in CA, it’s gonna be a hot one!

Ever done the exact wrong thing on your last workout before a race?

Did you ever notice that average pace on the splits screen is different than that on the main screen?  The main screen has Thursday’s average pace at 10:18 but above says 10:47.

Surf City Half Marathon Recap

The type A personality in me was torn between posting this first or my January Recap- this won.

On the drive down
On the drive down

I first thought of running Surf City back in 2011 when I drove NikeC down so she could run it. I have thought about running it ever since but the timing was never right.  It still wasn’t the best timing this year but I decided screw it, I’m gonna run it anyways.   Even spectating it that once, from the finish line and mile 4ish, did not prepare me for the size of this thing.  I knew going in that it was touted as 20,000 runners but I didn’t completely comprehend that until Sunday morning.    My mother and I made a road tip of it and headed to Huntington Beach on Saturday.    Other than parking packet pickup was fairly simple.  Parking made it kind of nightmare-ish.  I was less than impressed with the expo.  For such a big race I was honestly expecting something better.  But at least I got out of there cheap since all I bought was a new Fitletic belt.IMG_8953 IMG_8941

That day we planned that my mom was going to drop me as close to the start as she could then go back to the overflow parking and kill some time before heading to the finish line.   That worked out great as she got me within a half mile and we wouldn’t get stuck in the parking lot trying to leave after the race.  It just meant I had a 2+ mile walk after the race.    We got to the start so much quicker than planned so I had about a little over an hour to go.   After some unfortunate experiences with Apple maps and the freeways the day before, we didn’t take any chance.   After walking to the start line, most of my time was spent waiting in the bathroom lines.  IMG_8962IMG_8969The race start was 7:45 but I knew my wave wasn’t scheduled to start until 7:55.  Even so I headed over around 7:30 because this was my first experience with a wave start.   This may have been my first time but even I know corrals only work if the guidelines were followed and I saw so many of the wrong bibs in my wave.  At one point I was shoved out of the way by some spectators making their way through the corral- really?  Thanks for stepping on my feet too.    I crossed the start line at 8:01.

So many people!!
So many people!!

Miles 1-3  9:48, 9:55, 9:46

The goal for this race was to treat it like a long run not a race.  I had been concerned that I would try to push it too hard at the start like I do most races.  Luckily there were so many people, I don’t think I could have run any faster.  What was concerning to me was that I hurt.  My shins, calves and knees hurt right from the start and that is not normal.  I’m not sure if it was because of waiting in the bathroom lines so long or the short beach walk the day before or hey the 25K the weekend before but I was hurting.  The two hours of sleep I got the night before probably didn’t help.   My goal was to keep the 2:10 pacer in sight.

Miles 3-6  10:11, 9:59, 10:12

Holy crap, the water stations were a cluster f***.    There was just so many people and most just came to a completer stop mid run.   And who flings their arms out at water stations?  I am surprised I don’t have bruises from how many times I was pegged.    But there were plenty of aid stations and volunteers on the course, so that was huge.   My legs were still hurting but I was determined to keep the pacers in my sights.IMG_8936Miles 7-9  10:23, 10:38, 11:13

I lost the pacers around 6.5 when my lungs protested the humidity.  Honestly I knew it was coming at some point I was just hoping it held off longer.  When I had checked the weather that morning, I saw a scary number next to humidity- 95%.   By the end of the race it had dropped to 70% and the temp was mid 60’s but by then my asthma was cranky.  So from then on it was intervals of run til I wheeze, walk it out.    I also felt like a disgusting mess thanks to the humidity.    My arm warmers, which were unneeded, worked great at wiping down my face.   I also started dumping water down my back at aid stations.

Miles 10-13  11:22, 11:49, 11:04, 11:09

I slowed down more but managed to pick it up a bit by the end.   I was still surprised at how crowded it was even then.    I am used to it thinning out but it never did.    I underestimated how much the bobbing and weaving was going to take out of me and I was ready to be done.

Finish- 2:19:00   Pace 10:37IMG_9026Once crossing the line and receiving the medal, there were a few photographers taking pics there so we bottle necked.  Then there we went through little stations about 20 feet apart- water bottles, space blankets, bag of snacks, bananas.  Then there was a row of finishing pictures before walking through the medical tents.  I felt so nasty from sweating that I didn’t even put on my medal, I didn’t want it be all nasty.     I just held it up for the finisher pictures.

Then we were finally turned loose into the crowd of spectators.   I had no idea where my mom was and texts weren’t going through but I finally got a call through.  The lifeguard stations worked as great landmarks.  🙂  I so wanted to just go sit in the ocean but wasn’t going to walk the 2 miles back to car barefoot nor was I going to put wet feet into my running shoes so I passed.

I'd dried off a bit by then :)
I’d dried off a bit by then 🙂

My overall pace was actually right where it was supposed to be for a long run according to the McMillan calculator.  My pride would have preferred to be under 2:15 but considering the humidity and how unused to that many people I was, I am actually fine with my time.   First half of the year complete and I finally got my surfboard!!  Yay!

The Oddest Taper

It’s almost Friday!!  And I’m on vacation!  😛

But let’s back up.  Even before the reality of a trail 25K kicked my ass, I knew I may have to adjust some things this week.   I figured if I was feeling extra achy and sore after Sunday, I would push Tuesday’s run to Wednesday and Thursday’s to Friday since I took a few days off for Surf City.  Ummm, what was I thinking running a 25K and a half 7 days apart?

13.1 It Takes a Special Kind of Idiot... I think I should start training for a half marathon :)
7 days later, ouch source

I was a little achy but headed to the gym on Tuesday per usual.  I ran super slow but I was just fine with that.  3.5 miles later, I stretched and called it a day.  Even though my pace was slow, I unintentionally pulled off the perceived effort progression that was on tap per my training plan.  Calling that a win!  Oh and my gym now has those scary stair things, it was interesting watching people on them.  But much better than the freaky cut-the-alien-out-of-the-stomach sci fi movie on in front me.  Blech, I love sci fi but not creature flicks.

Going Tuesday worked out well as I was so tired on Wednesday I overslept that morning.  Then I fell asleep in the comfy chair trying to watch Supernatural that night.  How I didn’t knock the laptop off my lap, I have no idea.   I had planned on running today per usual but my stomach was rebelling pretty badly so I went back to the Friday plan.  Well hopefully.  🙂  I kind of need to pack at some point too.

I got this... right?
I got this… right?

I took a few days off around Surf City because I figured these 8-9 days were going make me pretty tired.  However when I planned that I didn’t realize that was also my window to complete reviews at work.  So I spent most of this week trying to kick those out.  Or at least to a point where I only have to make some minor edits when I return.   Writing reviews stress me out, maybe that’s contributing to my tiredness.   I am so turning off the alarm tomorrow morning.

Wednesday was also my re-check with my gastro.  He’s at a loss, so we’re changing my medication.  This kind of freaks me out, I’ve been taking it for 12 years, what’s going to happen?  He actually warned me that I could have a rough couple of days when I make the change, so we agreed that I could do that Monday after the race.  Plus I have those days off so yay?    Way less exciting than the original plan to go to Disneyland on Monday.  But you know, measles.

Ever use those scary stair machines?  I am not even sure I could even get on one without falling.

Would you chance the measles?

Anyone racing this weekend or having a Super Bowl party?

Who cried at the Budweiser commercial?

Sayonara September

September was synonymous with stress.  Anyone else have that feeling?  I didn’t even have to deal with the biggest stressor- back to school.   Starting with the last 2 weekends of August, I had something going on every weekend since.  Either work events or work, races or the festival.  I call myself Slacker for a reason; I like a weekend where the only thing I need to plan is if I want to run before or after lunch.   I am so looking forward to this weekend, I swear I am sleeping until after 9 on Saturday.

But all whining aside, let’s talk numbers.  I said I needed to step back and have a few more rest days and I followed through.  September is my lowest mileage month yet.   But that’s ok because I am finally listening to my body, it only had to shout for a while.  🙂

Miles-61
Races-3

  • Ventura Half Marathon
  • HOB Fun Run 10K
  • HOB Fun Run 5kseptemberrecapGoing forward into October (how is it October?!) I will continue to take it easy.  Running only 3 days a week and hopefully cross training 2.    I am trying to work on slowing down my paces until I figure out this asthma thing.   That’s actually a lot harder than it sounds.   Sometimes I feel like I am crawling but running a 9:00 minute pace, other times I feel like I am really pushing and look at my watch to see an 11:00 minute pace.   Time to focus on trying to run by feel, fingers crossed.

    Me these days.

I also want to have fun.  Health issues aside, the 5k last weekend was fun.    I wouldn’t mind a few more of those.  At this moment, my race calendar is completely clear.   I had wanted to run 2 half marathons in October and 1 in November, so now I am looking for fun 5k’s.    I was also hoping to run a trail race in November with my mom again but it’s been pushed to January for some reason.   However that actually works better.  🙂

Funny thing about my 62 miles?  On Tuesday I was super tired but wanted to hit 60 miles for the month.  I was at 57.5, so I told myself I only needed 3.5 miles to hit 60.   See a problem there?  While running I wanted to quit at mile 2.5 but my lack of math skills were still in full force.    It wasn’t until I added the run into Nike+ that I realized my error.   Seriously?!  Basic addition and I mess it up.

Happy October!  Happy Friday!

Anyone else add wrong running?

Any awesome October plans?

Fessing Up

Considering how badly I hurt after Ventura I was expecting to be in pain on Monday and Tuesday.  Surprisingly, I felt fine.  I only felt a couple of twinges here and there.   Which was good as Monday was my first night back to volleyball.   I had Monday and Tuesday as vacation days, so it was super nice to sleep in on Monday.   I ran some errands and played on the computer, a nice relaxing day before volleyball in the evening.    While we didn’t win, we played well.  It was new team (sort of) and I hadn’t played in almost a year.   I thought I was going to be more rusty but it felt very familiar.

Damn, my shoes are white
Damn, my shoes are white

The only downside was the niggling of headache that had been lingering for a few days.  That niggling turned into a full blown migraine by Tuesday morning and I could barely walk, let alone get in my planned run.  I spent Tuesday in bed in a dark room.  Great vacation day right?   That headache has hung around since, so I actually have not run since Ventura.  I did make it to work the rest of the week though.  I had to take a personality type assessment (similar to Myers Briggs) on Wednesday for a training seminar.   Never take those when you have a headache.    Your answers are just a little off.    Oops!   Oh well, at least I got a decent laugh out of it.   And I think I figured out what triggered the headaches, so hopefully those will be easing.  🙂

My 6+ miles of walking in the Ventura half gave me plenty of time to think; plenty of time to fess up.  Back in the beginning of June I posted my No Excuses Summer post.  For the most part I stuck to it.  But I shouldn’t have.  My lovely GI issue flared up shortly after that and it’s now going on 3 months.  Instead of stepping back and getting some rest, I turned in 2 of my highest mileage months ever.   My body said one thing and my head ego said something else.   Which led me to Ventura.   I’m not even mad because honestly the writing was on the wall.  My paces have gotten slower, walking breaks longer and I take a nap any chance I get- damn near everyday.

So, where am I going with this?  Half marathons and I are taking a little break.  I am dropping back to running 3x a week and capping my long runs around 9.    I have run 4 half marathons this year, that is double any previous year so really I have nothing to complain about.   But this means missing City to the Sea and that kind of pisses me off.   This would have been my third year running it.  I really like the course and the volunteers and this year the shirt is purple! I want that!  But the race also falls 4 days after I go to USC so a smarter head must prevail.  I’m not done racing though, I love races!  I am just going to stick to 10K’s and under for a bit.    I would love to run a half in November if I am healthy enough but I have accepted that Surf City (NikeC!) in February might be my next half.

At times I am ok with this scaled back plan and others I am irritated.  But then I did it to myself.  Now I have to stick to this plan and not let the lower monthly numbers play with my head.  Which is what happened the last time I said I should scale back.    I have the Avocado Margarita Festival this weekend so it’s going to be busy but hopefully my next post will have some actual running in it.   I want to run 3 days a week not none!

Ever taken one of those fun assessment tests?

Ever run yourself into a hole or is it just my special talent?

What are you doing this weekend?

Anyone racing?  (Good luck to Courtney at Don’t Blink Just Run!)
