Only Slightly Crazy

Have you ever had one of those weeks where you were just in left field?  Like the world existed on one plane and you were on some other cuckoo level?  Yeah that’s where I am at this week.  Welcome to my planet.   Today I actually told a coworker “that I had never forgetted” something.  Seriously?  Did my brain take a vacation without me?  *Case in point- I published this without a title and had to correct it.isWatermarked

Last Friday, I had the start of a headache.  Combine that with all of the sun from a 2.5 hour run on Saturday afternoon and a few hours at the beach on Sunday and you get a raging headache that arrived Monday.  And it’s still here.  It’s my good buddy now.  Ha!  Monday’s run, though stressful, helped a bit.  On Tuesday I set out for another run.   I met my mom after work at the river path, it made for a nice warm up.   I kept it pretty easy though, so just 4.5 miles with warm up and cool down.   I did push it a bit for mile 4.  Thanks to my lovely stomach I can only go faster than 9:30 in short bursts.  Anything more than that is just not working right now.    Once again the headache eased while running only to return later.  It’s like a bad penny!

still turning off the Garmin for cool down, I'm so odd sometimes.

Wednesday was more of the same but I refused to cancel on gym night with NikeC again.  Plus it’s back to Wednesday nights now since my class was canceled due to low enrollment.  Boo!   I crawled a mile on the treadmill for a warm up before we hit the circuit room.   I used slightly lower weights than normal but at least it was something.   I also did a bunch of squats because those didn’t hurt my head, and I can so feel it in my legs today.    Our gym offers a boot camp type class on Saturdays and NikeC went this last Saturday.  I want to go but am waiting until after the Ventura half.  The trainer came up to us while we were warming up and asked me why I didn’t go.  I said I didn’t want to try anything new before the half.  She replied that they had never had anyone get hurt.   Maybe so but I am just plain clumsy.  When I informed her that I currently had a sliced foot and had managed to cut my hand that day, she decided I needed an injury/ liability waiver.   Nice.isWatermarkedToday I just marched to the beat of my own drum apparently.  And the drumstick was broken.   For those who are thinking why doesn’t she just take something for her headache?  I usually would if a headache lingered this long but I am currently taking the lovely (multiple) antibiotics prescribed by my doctor and figured that was more than enough pills.  I made myself go to sleep earlier last night and slept with an ice pack on my head.  But even with all that, today was a rest day.  Tomorrow likely will be too.  I tried running it out, so now I’ll try waiting it out.  This usually happens 2-3 times a year, so it will pass.

I have one last 8-10 miler that I would like to do this weekend and then it’s taper time!!  I won’t lie, that actually sounds pretty nice right now.     But right now I am looking forward to cookie Friday and a 3 day weekend!!!  Which hopefully means sleeping in.

How about you?  What are your plans this weekend?

Anyone racing?

Any other headache remedy suggestions?

Real Running Conversations

Wow, I love all the comments on the last post.  I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who can get a little crazy while running.  🙂

Tuesdays seem to be turning into a typical rest day for me.   I had briefly thought about trying to squeeze in a run before my doctor’s appointment but I didn’t get off early enough.  That was probably a good thing as it was pretty warm when I got home and I was still in a little funk from Monday’s rambling 🙂     So instead, I went to the doctor (yuck) and then just had an easy night.  And maybe some pizza.  🙂

Yesterday, I had the beginning’s of a migraine but I was ready to run.  I knew I was meeting M after work to run a few miles.   I haven’t run with M since last fall, so I was excited.  Then I found out C was joining us-sweet!     As I drove up to M’s house, I had to laugh out loud.   They were both waiting on the sidewalk and somehow without planning it first, we all wore pink.  Like bright pink, so 3 blondes in pink tanks.  And blogger fail, I forgot to take a picture.  😦   We didn’t really have a route planned but it didn’t matter.  We ran when we wanted to, walked when needed and talked a lot.  It was great.  M’s just getting back into running so when we passed her house at 2.6 miles, she peeled off and C and I rounded it out to 4 miles.    Now if we can just make it a weekly thing.

While it was a great run, it still felt hard.  Granted, I don’t usually talk (out loud) and run at the same time.  Then a light bulb clicked- my doctor had ordered a bunch of lab work and I had the blood work done that morning.  That lady was a vampire!   Seriously, how many vials did she need?!   And she left me with a gnarly bruise.  That could have made me a little tired.  Oops.2.5miles

That headache that was niggling yesterday was a full-blown migraine when I woke up this morning.   It got so bad, that I actually took something for it at work.  Our first aid kit makes me smile, I took a “Pain Terminator” today.  I love the names they make up for their generics 🙂 I also accepted that the planned 6 miler was not happening.  Instead I headed to the lake for a short 2 miles.  Sometimes, running can help my head.  Usually I would head to the gym for the treadmill but I figured the lake was just as good.  If my head was pounding after the first lap, I could call it done.   It wasn’t easy but it wasn’t horrible either, actually pretty speedy.  I finished 2 laps plus a tiny bit to hit 2.5 miles and headed home for the comfy chair.   Interestingly Nike says I ran through the lake tonight-

ummm, not so much
ummm, not so much

I did get an inhaler from my doctor on Tuesday but I haven’t noticed any difference in either run.  Then again I was never very good at using one.  🙂   But in yummy news, we have awesome customers and I got to enjoy this today-cheesecake Anyone racing this weekend?

Any big plans?

Come on now!

This may actually be my 15th attempt at trying to post this damn thing.  I tried numerous times last night and then again on my lunch today.  No luck.  WordPress and I have been having a tense conversation, mostly one sided, by me, with some very colorful language.

As Monday’s go, today was actually pretty good.  Got most everything squared away from last week’s mess, plus the computers were up and running.   I was sad to see just how dark it was tonight when leaving work.  No run tonight, busy getting ready for a long day tomorrow.  Driving to Upland with the tennis team. Wish me luck, I’ll need it.

Happy Monday!!!

And now for the original post-

This Saturday I did not have to work, so yay!   I had the intention to run some errands, go phone shopping with my mom, and get in a good run in the afternoon.

The errands were tedious, lunch was yummy, and the phone store was hilarious.   My mother had a droid which she loved and then hated with a passion.   She was ready for a new one and kept asking my opinion.  I have had an iPhone for years and knew nothing about droids, so I couldn’t really help her.   She claimed she hated iPhones but couldn’t tell me why.   So she did her research online and decided that she wanted the new Moto X (I think).  The phone store was slammed, I was very surprised by how freaking busy they were.   We talked to the representative there for a while before my mom said she would buy the Moto.  The salesperson replied that they did not have any and it would have to be ordered.  Uh oh.   The thing about my family is they have no patience.  When they want something they want it yesterday. My mother thought for about 45 seconds, looked at the sales rep and said “I’ll buy an iPhone.” I cracked up laughing.

So my mother was the brand new owner of an iPhone, I spent the afternoon helping her set it up and download all the apps she may use or need.    Then she and I went for a run/walk.  I have talked her into doing the Spooner’s Cove 5 mile with me.  Her first race!!!   She was tired so we walked together sometimes and sometimes I ran ahead and then doubled back.  I don’t know why, but I loved hills yesterday.  I saw an incline and thought I have to run that.  All in all it was a good 4.5 miles.   Also I took a few fall themed pictures-

Maybe fall will be here awhile?

The plan of attack for today was to hit the track for some speed work.  I was thinking a mile warmup, 3 miles of speed work, and a mile cool down.   However the headache that greeted me this morning derailed that.  I still headed to the track hoping that running would ease it back.  Mile 1- no such luck.  Mile 2- still ouch.  Finshing mile 3, I still felt like crap but figured I would complete 4 miles with trying some sprints for the last mile.   Apparently I should sprint with a headache more often, my last mile came in at 8:47.  And I was done.  I stretched out and headed home to some cleaning and laundry.

I also had the New York marathon on in the background while doing chores.   That was a crazy amount of people!!! And some very impressive running.  I don’t know if I want to run in a race that big or if it kind of scares me. 🙂

miles

As for the November challenge, I chose to sign up for Pile on the Miles over at Run Eat Repeat.  I was torn between this one and The no excuses challenge at Running Bug.  I was also tempted by one I read about called No-Run-vember.  Got to admit that sounded tempting!  But I was good and chose to run instead.  🙂 So 2 3 days in and 8 miles in, I can do this!!!!

And now tomorrow is Monday and fingers crossed, the network and computers will be working again.  Also that it doesn’t take too long to fix the mess left after Friday.

I hope everyone who ran or raced had an awesome weekend!

Troubles with counting…

Sleep has not been my friend these past few days.  After Wednesday’s rest day, I had planned to do 4 miles in between work and class on Thursday.  I was still exhausted when I woke that morning.  We have also had 2 people out sick during the week and numerous sick customers.  Not cool.   Half way through the day I had a sore throat and a headache.  No!

I didn’t feel sick but I didn’t feel well either.  I thought long and hard on whether I should run or not.  I am so afraid of getting sick right now.  I have just over 7 days until City to the Sea.   I ran my second half marathon 2 weeks after having the stomach flu.  That was hell.  I cried at mile 10.  I don’t mean little sniffles; I mean balled my eyes out. I was so done.  😦 I am not doing that again, so I chose to rest and not run.   My running bag and shoes were on the floor of my passenger seat.  I felt like they were judging me on my drive to school.  😦

Friday was more of the same, with an added bonus of waking up at 4AM with a gnarly Charlie horse.  Ouch!  On top of that work was crazy busy.  I spent the day popping Vitamin C and trying to firmly believe in mind over matter.   All this led to another rest day.  But I had done 3 off in a row before, I would be ok right?

Apparently I can’t count.  Checked my nike app this morning and it showed zero miles for October.  That hurt.  Then I noticed the date, October 5.  Wait, what?  But I had only had 3 rest days.  Then it dawned on me that volleyball on Tuesday may have not been a rest day but it didn’t add any miles either.  I hadn’t run in 4 days.  Well crap.

What the hell happened?
What the hell happened?

My head still ached but I had to get in a few miles.  After getting my errands done, laundry done, car cleaned and helping my parents schlep some concrete, I was going to rest for a bit and then head to the gym for some very easy treadmill miles.   Yeah, that rest turned into me falling asleep on the floor.  Oops.   When I woke up I had lost my enthusiasm for the gym.  But I changed my clothes, put on my running shoes and headed out the door.

I didn’t go to the gym but instead just ran / walked around my neighborhood.  Downside to that is there are a lot of hills.  Those were some hard four miles.  I was tired and sluggish and just wanted to be done.

Not the best but moving forward
Walking counts as moving forward right?

But they were run.   I actually felt ok after the run.  My headache had briefly gone away.  It eventually came back but here’s hoping some sleep and a nice relaxing Sunday helps it go away.  Maybe with some more easy miles thrown in.

Anyone else having a rough start to the weekend?
