Radio silence

Long time no share.   I think that was the longest posting break I have taken since I started this blog almost 3 years ago.   I try to stick to a schedule of posting 3x a week so my one post last week was very lonely.  😞

I wanted to post but just didn’t feel like I was in the right head space there for a while.   I ended up taking Wednesday through Saturday off of running as well.    So attempt 1 of changing my weekly schedule didn’t work out.  A migraine rolled in on Wednesday evening and didn’t leave until Saturday.    Sometimes I run through them but this time I just decided to embrace the Slacker and rest.    The migraine was probably partially hormonal and partially due to stress so rest sounded great.  😃  I watched some tv, read some fanfic online (yes I am that nerdy) and maybe ate some things that I shouldn’t have.    I have zero regrets about that donut- I needed it for my mental health.    🙂

Work is in the process of getting a little crazier so I decided that I just needed some quiet time.   I work in a location with a smaller staff, only about 6, and 3 have given notice.    All are for different life reasons but the timing still makes me doubt myself as a manager.    There are some things that I have no control over and I know this but still that little voice in my head starts whispering.     Ugh.   Plus with 3 leaving, things are about to get really interesting.   I see some very long days in the future… Very soon.    I am trying going to stay optimistic and it is what is and we will get through it.  Where did the cynical Slacker go?

I am hopeful that I can stick to my usual running of 4x a week throughout  the coming weeks but if I have to drop a day I will.   We’ll see.   Also I need to get back on that schedule, I haven’t hit 4 days a week since the week before SLO.  oops!!   IMG_0336

I did get in some miles on Sunday.   On Saturday, my mother and I had headed into SLO for a little shopping.      One of those stops was the Running Warehouse.    It broke my little Mizuno-loving heart but I exchanged my Inspire’s.    I don’t know what it was but I just could not break them in.    I hate exchanging shoes,  I feel bad that they have to be sent back, but I do not have the room in the budget to just keep buying shoes.   I swapped them out for a pair of the Wave Rider 18’s.   Maybe they are what I should have gone with in the first place.  Hmmm, we’ll see.IMG_0355Sunday was Mother’s Day (Happy belated Mother’s Day to all you mothers!) and the day started with a nice run/ walk with my mom.  We did the usual walk for a bit then I would run ahead and double back.    I was feeling a little tired and sluggish but after 4 days off, I wasn’t complaining.   Plus it was my first run in my new shoes.   🙂    In a completely unimportant note, these shoes sure are pretty, I hope I like them.

So I am hoping to get back to the regularly scheduled programming this week.   Hopefully in all areas, fingers crossed!

How was your weekend?  Mother’s Day?

Ever needed a time out? What did you do?

Dress Rehearsal

It was the weekend before SLO, so of course I made sure to get in all my workouts right?  Ummm, no.     I had good intentions but was feeling tired on Saturday.  Even after sleeping in.  I ended up helping my mom move a bunch of rocks.  After multiple buckets of lifting rocks and carrying them, my hamstrings were cranky again.  I decided that counted as cross training and was good or the day.    🙂

Sunday though was going to happen. Last longish run before SLO.   My training plan called for a 75 minute 2/3 progression run, each third progressively faster.    On race days, 75 minutes could mean 8 miles, however on long run days, that would be more like 7.  Having not run on Saturday, I was internally hoping for 9 at an easy pace.   Since I know the likelihood of breaking 2:00 this weekend is small, I was fine with longer, slower miles.IMG_0136

I was a little sore from the rocks, oops, so I headed to the lake path for a flat surface.   I headed out before lunch!!  Who am I?  My mom came with me, she was going to walk laps of the lake while I was running.     I walked my usual warm up and just got to running.   I didn’t feel up to the 2/3 plan but I thought maybe I could run the first have around 10:45 and the last half around 10:00.  That sounded like a solid plan to me.    That’s what I thought I could do, I was wrong.  But in a good way for once!IMG_0150 I didn’t feel like I was moving faster but according to my splits I was.  I’m not sure how I hit those when I was feeling super tired but no complaints from me!    Mile 6 was a little slower as I had run into my mother again and walked a bit with her.  At that point, she was planning on only one more lap and I was torn between 2 or 3 more miles.  It was a warmer day than planned so I decided to be smart and call it at 8 miles.  It was in the 70’s by the time we were done.    Last longish run done!  Bring on the taper- oh wait, my plan doesn’t have one!IMG_0134It’s crunch time for the race now, so I set out on Sunday in a potential race day outfit.    I had purchased a new skirt at Lululemon the week before so I wanted to test it out.  SLO has a Lululemon now, well kind of, it’s only open 3 days a week, and my first time there cost me some money. I love their shorts so I bought a new pair and a skirt.    Oops!  I think I am a skirt fan now.  If I could have an unlimited budget at Skirt Sports and Lulu, that would be awesome.   Well, there and Mizuno too.  🙂  Endless shoes and skirts!!

I also hope it is partly the shade. :)
I also hope it is partly the shade. 🙂

Over all the outfit worked well.   I am still not sold on the shirt and I will be wearing full compression socks but the skirt is a go.  It turned out to be super comfy for 8 miles and that was without any Body Glide.     I figured that was the only way to figure where the hot spots might be.  🙂   Since my mom was with me, I asked her to take a pic.  I think another goal of 2015 is to finally get a decent race pic.   Seriously, the pics from Surf City and Wine Country were so bad.   So bad.    Actually breaking 2:00 might be easier than a good race pic.  Ha!   My sock tan makes me laugh.  I don’t wear full compression socks that often, just long runs and races but check that out!

Does moving rocks count as cross training?

What do you like to race in?

Do you take good pictures?

Forget-me-what?

Now, I normally pride myself on freakish memory.  Particularly for numbers and things like that, sometimes I scare people.    This week though, my memory has checked out.    On Tuesday I was all set to run after work.  I felt like I needed a run, the morning had been a little odd.  I often take my clothes into work to change but leave my shoes in the car.  This sometimes means I walk to my car in running clothes and flats or heels.    I changed and walked to my car.  When I went to throw my gym bag on the floor of the passenger seat, I notice something missing. forgot shoes

I forgot my damn shoes.  Seriously.    As I drove back to town, I was irritated and debating what to do.   I could go home and get my shoes but I knew that once I was home, I was less likely to get back and run.    I keep a box of shoes in my trunk with a pair of flip-flops, some flats, a pair of heels and 2 old pairs of running shoes.  I like to be prepared.  🙂   So I decided to try running in one of those pairs.   I put on my old Wave Riders and set out.   I kept it slow and easy because I wasn’t sure how the shoes were going to feel.  No lies, my feet were angry, it’s time to retire those shoes completely, they cannot be run anymore.  I took a complete break at mile 3 to try to calm my feet down.  Once again, I looked up and NikeC was coming my way.  We chatted for a bit before I ran on and back to my car.    If it wasn’t for my shoes making my feet angry, I would say that it was a pretty good run.    9-25Instead of passing each other, NikeC and I decided to just run together tonight.  I made sure to pack my shoes; in fact, I packed both my current Wave Riders and Sayonaras.    🙂  But I forgot my Garmin and a decent sports bra.  Ugh!!!  I had one in my bag as a backup but I wasn’t sure how it would be for 5 miles.   We ran one of her usual routes.  Right away I just felt tired.   I was having troubles catching my breath- stupid humidity!  I felt bad, we would run and then I would have to take a walking break.   Granted, neither of us are used to running and talking so that was probably hindering us as well.  🙂    It may have been slower than planned but it was still a good run.  Plus being able to watch the sun set from different angles was cool.    My Nike+ app has been crashing but it said that we did 4.87 miles while hers was closer to 5.   I choose to go with the 5.  🙂   I missed my Garmin.sunsetAs of right now, I am signed up for the 10K on Sunday.    This may well be my last chance to run a 10K until next year.  10K’s are sparse around here.  I hoping that one will pop up around Thanksgiving but no luck yet- all 5K’s and half marathons.    When it comes to the 5K- well I am also signed up for that.  I have yet to decide if I am running it.   I will figure that out as it gets closer.   Actually right now I am more concerned about chafing.  I am wearing a team tank for the first time on race day, yikes!  I can’t test it out because I won’t even get it until Saturday.    My arms are very particular about what kind shirts they lake.   Which is why I have the same tank in 11 different colors.   Fingers crossed!

Happy Friday!!

Almost there…

Friday was just as crazy as the rest of the week had been but it was ok, I had cookie Friday to get me through it.  🙂  Plus for once, I had plans after work, girls night!  I met ML and A for dinner and a movie after work.    Dinner was at a pub like restaurant, where I took no pictures.  Oops!  The burger was so good I was too busy eating it and catching up with them.   Then it was on the movies, we saw Maze Runner.  It was good and they did a decent job of sticking to the book.  Granted I read it years ago, but they hit all the points I remembered.  I also indulged in movie popcorn, maybe too much, but it was so worth it.

Saturday morning started with work.  While I love that the weather is finally below triple digits, I could do with out the fog increase that has accompanied the cooler weather, particularly on my commute.   At one point, I could barely see 2 car lengths ahead of me.  Ugh.  After work, I decided to use Saturday as a rest day and just ran some errands.   My legs are a little tired from the extra 6 hours or so of standing per day but it’s still awesome.  I decided that it had been too long since I had rearranged the bedroom furniture so that was how I spent my Saturday evening.

She sure thought it was fun

With my new plan to step back on running, I am aiming for 3 days a week, 15-20 miles.   This week I had hoped for 15, a 3, a 5 and a 7 mile run.  Instead it was 3.5, 4.5 and 4.3.    I started the second set of medication that my doctor prescribed last night and woke with a pounding headache.  I don’t have time for that!  I had plans to go toSLO with my mom and get some shopping done plus that 7 mile run.

Purty, right?
Purty, right?

We were heading to SLO because back in July, I bought her a pair of running shoes at The Running Warehouse.  They were supposed to be a very early Christmas present but after a month, she decided that she hated them because the tongue never stayed in place.   So that was the first stop of the morning.   Probably should have checked the times because they didn’t open until 10.  Oops.  I told her that she had to do all the talking.  🙂  Luckily the service was great as usual.   She didn’t have a second choice, so I took partial store credit and picked up a new pair of Wave Rider’s with the other part.   The new version comes out in a month so this way I have a back up when I need a new pair.  Plus who knows if I will like the new version.  I hated the Wave Inspire update.

And then I sat down.
And then I sat down.

Then it was lunch and some more shopping.  I wanted to stop at Banana Republic, I have an interview on Tuesday, so I felt I needed a new dress.   My head was still pounding and I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get in any running.   Once home, I put my stuff away and then took a 25 minute power nap.    I had very little desire run at that point but my head felt a little better, so I headed out.  I kept it super easy and walked whenever I needed.   Considering how I felt for the most of the day, I’d say it was damn good run.  I even had the energy to take the last hill (slowly) and hit 4.3 miles instead of the other way, 3.8.   I’d call that a win. 🙂  So mileage for the week- 12.3.

How was your weekend?

A Little Running and a Little Tom

Seriously, where has this week gone?  Not that I am complaining that tomorrow is Friday but how is tomorrow Friday?    Yesterday felt like Monday all day long.   Nobody needs two Mondays in one week.

funny quote my week all mondays except friday and saturday
This week, yes. Thanks Pinterest

I still love my new desk even if it is taking me longer to adjust than I thought.  I make it to about 1 each day before I need to sit; but I have adjusted to the chair finally.  I almost fell off the dang thing on Monday.  Between the wheels and the higher height of the seat, I had a few rough moments.  My challenge gave my coworkers a good laugh though.  🙂

Tuesday’s run was rough.  Just ugh.    Not sure if it was partly due to tired legs or what but lets just leave it at 3.5 miles done.    Wednesday turned into a rest day.  I was supposed to go to the gym but I just wasn’t feeling it and work ran later than planned so rest it was.   I switched back to heels as well that day and for some reason, standing seemed easier.  I am so odd.IMG_6403

Tonight I had no desire to run the lake path so I headed back to my town and hit up the river path.   My initial warm up walk extended itself because I was a little nervous to run.  My last 2 4 “easy” runs have been the opposite of easy and throw in the Ventura half and I was just afraid of another rough run.  I couldn’t even decide on how many miles to run.  The Slacker in me was saying that 3 would be fine, the moderately reformed Slacker was telling me to do 5.   That tiny bit of fear was telling me to walk the whole thing.IMG_6407

I still have the 8:30/1:00 intervals set up on my Garmin, so after walking the first 9:30 I decided to stick with that and started running.   I tried to focus on my breathing and take slow, deep breaths.  I wanted to see if it helped any.  My old rule of thumb for most runs was to never be huffing and puffing even if it meant I was slower.  It worked for me last year, so let’s try it again!  I noticed after a mile or so that my form was better than usual.  I felt like I was running tall and it felt good.  Not sure if it was an added bonus of standing more  or if it was the shoes.   I was wearing my Sayonaras and I try to pay a little more attention to my form in them since they are a very neutral shoe and I tend to over pronate on the right side.   I was also running with Tom Cruise hands.  Why??? Again, I am odd.

I walked the 1:00 interval in both miles 2 & 3, telling myself I would try to run all of 4.  Sounds like a little thing but I haven’t run a solid mile in well over a month.   While I succeeded, I don’t think it counts.  At 3.5 miles I have to cross a street to get back to the path.  I tried to run across quickly but somehow my pepper spray leaped out my belt and landed in the cross walk.  I got to the curb and somehow paused both my Garmin and Nike+ app while spinning around.  I must have looked funny because every car was stopped staring at me.  What do I do?  Leave it or bolt and get it? I waved one car on and hoped no one on the other side would run over it.  I then bolted out grabbed it and ran back.  Dang it, that messed with my breathing!  And I finally lost the Tom Cruise hands.  🙂  I carried the pepper spray the rest of the way.  1/4 mile later, I saw NikeC running my way, so we stopped and chatted a bit.  So yes, I ran all of mile 4 but I had 2 breaks.   😦

Overall, this was the least stressful run I have had in over a month.  For once I didn’t feel horrible.   Now just to duplicate it and still take it easy.   Easy, peasy right?  Ha!

How has your week been?  Anyone else have an extra Monday?

Anyone racing this weekend?  Long running?

Ever Tom Cruise’d it up?
