Heating Up

My plan of running all the miles, road or trail was thwarted by the weather this past weekend. Who ordered the above 110 degrees for 3 days in a row??? Not me. And yes, it’s actually kind of typical here for those temps in the summer. The part that made the weekend hard was that it was still hot at night too. At least by our standards, we usually drop into the low 60’s at night when it’s that hot.

I finally made it out for some miles on Sunday by running away to the coast. I headed for MDO like usual but found a completely new trail to me. Yay! It was kind of like entering a whole new world.

The trees and mountains were just so different from the other trails. It’s not the longest but still awesome. I’ve already thought of ways to add on to it as well for future adventures.

As Monday was my actual birthday, I had taken the day off of work in case I was moody, haha. It was freakin’ hot so no running occurred, boo. But I did indulge in my annual birthday tradition of eating too much at Sylvestor’s. Yum. Then I may have taken a long nap er, food coma.

Tuesday was back to work and I was looking forward to running after- I had new shoes to try out! The never ending shoe saga continues. And still continues… less than 3 miles in the Hoka’s and I swear everything hurt. My heel, then my arch, quads, then my shins. Then the back of my knee, then my butt. What the hell???? I know I should have tried them again but was too spooked, back in the box they went and shipped back. Yikes!

How many runs do you give a pair of shoes before you throw in the towel?

How’s your weather?

Week 33- Sidelined

If there is an upside to not running, it’s the fewer loads of laundry you have to do on the weekend.

Gotta find the shiny side, right?  Or try to.  ๐Ÿ˜›

So yeah, thanks to the UTI from hell and me not checking about the medication first, last week was super Slacker like.    But maybe I needed it?  I didn’t really have time to worry about my mysterious groin pain issue as the medication issue forced me to rest anyways.

Work wise, things are a little more under control after this week.  I finally managed to get my inbox to 50 ish.  Which is still not great but it’s way better than it was.     I treat my inbox like a to-do list so the triple digits were starting to get to me.   Now if I could just get my piles of paper under control.  ๐Ÿ˜›

So let’s get to the very abbreviated work out week-

Monday- 1.3 miles  I felt crap all day but I was trying to ignore it.  I’d been living in denial for quite some time.  I headed for the lake path to get in some miles but it only took one loop to admit defeat.  I had a problem and I likely needed medicine.  Grrr.

Tuesday- Rest Made it to the doctor and they confirmed my suspicions and my denial.  Ha!  Never been so thankful for medicine…until I realized the side effects.

Wednesday- More rest.

Thursday- 3 mile walk  I had an appointment with my neurologist so I was home a little earlier than normal.  I figured I would try a walk.   Walking is not running.   I listened to a podcast to try not being so bored but I so wanted to be running.

Friday- Rest Holy crap, I was so sore.  What gives- it was only a walk!!  And I know I have a hip imbalance but for the most part I can ignore it during and after running.  After a little walk, I felt like I was walking crooked!

Saturday/Sunday- Rest I really did think about a trying for a long walk but in the end I just didn’t.  I napped a lot which seems to be my MO these days.  I have to get a new bed.  I just keep waking up in pain and feeling more tired than I did before.   I just keep hoping to make it Labor day and hoping that there will good sales.  I didn’t exactly plan for this purchase. Grrr.

4.3 miles for the week.  Yes, I’m counting those walking miles, they freakin’ hurt me.  ๐Ÿ˜›

Now as for this week, the medication has been completed but the effects linger so I think I am going to do some walking/jogging intervals.    Fingers crossed!

How was your week?

Any good running?

Week 28- Too Many Tabs

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock to the Pier 10K?
  • Salinas Valley Half Marathon

This week was so much better than last week but there were numerous points when I felt like an internet browser with too many tabs open.  Not just any internet browser- Internet Explorer.๐Ÿ˜›

The week leading up to system conversion was just as crazy as I anticipated and I didn’t make it to half of the training meetings that I had on the schedule.  I managed to have everyone else stick to the plan but me not so much.  Adding to the chaos, I was greeted Monday by a dead computer.  Yay.   With the computer change coming, I didn’t the point in bugging IT when they were already stressed to the max so I just stole pieces from other computers until I was working, haha.   This actually prompted someone to tell me that I was surprisingly positive.  ๐Ÿ˜›

Oddly enough, this week, I was.   Don’t get me wrong, there were times I felt completely underwater but somehow stayed positive.  At least I think I did.  Maybe I should with my  coworkers.   I was exhausted but kept trucking.  Ran more miles than last week but still fell short in a big way.  Oh and that 10k?   Ha!

Monday-  Rest   I had an early morning conference call and afternoon meeting at the south end of the county.  The meeting ended early but instead of heading home, I headed back to the office which turned out to be a good thing as even with me, we still got out an hour late.    No running for me.

Tuesday- 4 miles First run in 4 days.  And a source of amusement.  I was a little accident prone this week.   How I did not cause actual harm to myself on this run, I have no idea.   It was a slow run but it was a nice stress release besides all the drama.  ๐Ÿ˜›

Wednesday- Rest The day was chaos.  It was also my birthday.    Neither meeting really panned out.   My coworkers brought me donuts, Taco Works and Starburst’s.   Aww, they know me.   This system conversion is going to make my pants tighter. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thursday- 3.6 miles  The tiredness was setting in. I was beginning to realize that Saturday’s 10K was not a good idea.  I really did not want to run.   I changed and headed for home town trying to talk myself out of running the whole way.   However I parked, changed into my shoes and told myself I could do a 5K.   I ended up running a little more that but it wasn’t pretty.   I was sluggish and stopped more than necessary for a short run but it was done.

Friday- Work We’re just going to call it that.   I think I left work after a long day a little after 7.  Maybe later.  It’s hard to remember.

Saturday- 4.2 miles trail  Ok- no 10K race because- 1) the thought of an early morning alarm made me want to cry, 2) the idea of driving to work town 12 days in a row, mmm, nope.   So instead my mother took me shopping for my birthday- new shoes!- and then we did a little trail run in the afternoon.  The trail is awesome and very friendly to tired Slackers like me.    I considered running 6ish miles when I got home to finish a long run but it was 100+ still and there was another fire so we had a smoke advisory.   Boo.

Sunday- Work  Here’s where the 12 days in a row would have come in.   I actually went in to work in running clothes with my shoes and pack in the car but we ended up being there so much longer than planned.  I also found that while I had managed to get a computer working for me during the week I didn’t come out so pretty on the other side of conversion.  A lot of my settings and links were unrecoverable. ๐Ÿ˜ข It’s cool, I didn’t need those anyway right?  Fingers crossed.  I returned home to temps of 104.  I still planned on trying for a few miles but I ended up passing out for a long nap instead.  Oops.

11.8 miles for the week.  Again so much better than last week but kind of missing that 10 mile long run.   I am hopeful for the coming week but I know that it’s going to be another intense week at work and that needs to be my top priority.     I think I can, I think I can.   I also don’t want to disappear into a hole.  I feel like I barely read or commented on your blogs last week- well I think I read them but I’m not sure what happened after that.  Like I said- I was kind of hazardous.  ๐Ÿ˜›

How was your week?

Do you ever have accident prone weeks?  Moments?

Recovery Week Recap

I hadn’t planned on a recovery week after City to the Sea but that’s how it worked out.    But that’s ok.   Contradicts my last post though right?

In brief-
Monday- I thought about a shake out run but it was 94*.  Seriously?!
Tuesday-  I was looking forward to a good run but only made it one lap of the lake.   I felt…off, kind of tired and not right, a little woozy, so I called it after 1.15 miles.
Wednesday- The room was shaking and I turned a little green so I ended up leaving work early and going home sick.  I spent the afternoon sleeping.    On a side note, I found out I have 180 hours of sick time saved up.  ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
Thursday- I still wasn’t feeling great and couldn’t figure out how to change after a work meeting in a different town.   Walking around in shorts when the CEO is in the building?  Um no.   I didn’t count on my stomach making its whale song throughout the CEO’s presentation though.   Nice.
Friday-  My brother’s birthday- I indulged in pasta and birthday cake.  Homemade beef stroganoff and marble fudge frosting?  Yes, please.
Saturday– 3.85 miles.   I worked in the morning and was still feeling tired but I really wanted to run.  The run actually felt pretty good until my stomach turned on me around 2.7 miles in.  From there it was as fast as I could slowly get home.    And taking a shortcut.
Sunday-  Does a 3 hour nap count as training?  And more birthday cake.

Did I mention there are goats in the lake?

So yeah, more recovery that running.  I finally just decided to go with it.    Work has been chaos and stressful for months now, I’ve felt like I have been fighting something for a while.    At least it held off until after City to the Sea, or I was in denial until this week.   It takes a lot for me to leave work early because I feel sick.   Maybe I feel like I have to overcompensate for all my stomach issues? But at one point I was sitting on the ground under my desk; I felt so nauseous, I wasn’t doing any good there so I went home.    I slept a lot last week and I am feeling better today.    Oh and what does a sick runner do when they are resting?  Register for a race of course.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, last week’s training thoughts.   I think I have a plan for a new regimen, not a race training plan per se, but a plan for improving my running over all.     What I can’t decide is when to start it.    Part of me is eager to start this week but another part thinks it might be better to hold off.   I have a half marathon in less than 3 weeks followed by a 25K trail race 7 days later (potentially).   Since both of those races are more for the experience than PR’s, I am thinking it might be smarter to wait until after those 2 races.    Especially since I am not 100% on the new regimen.   There were some great book suggestions after my last post so I want to check a few of those out.  Right now I feel torn.  Grrr.

How was your weekend?

Would you start a new plan 3 weeks before a race?

What’s your favorite kind of cake?
