Cake’s a Carb, Right?

Short and sweet tonight!

So, I learned today that glass scales are made of tempered glass.   They still shatter into hundreds of pieces when dropped on a tile floor; but there way fewer sharp edges.  My big toe still found a sharp one.  😦

Today was fairly calm for a Friday- woo- hoo!

My coworkers bought me these beautiful flowers-flowersAs well as pizza for lunch, they know me so well.

Then there was this cake.  Tomorrow’s race may just be fueled by cake.  Cake’s a carb, right?cake#1I managed to sneak out for a break around 4 to pick up the race packet.   That was also the first time I saw tomorrow’s new age in print, yikes!  However, the swag was kind of awesome.pierswagThen it was back to work before heading home.   This is when I had a wardrobe conundrum-piergearNow, my gear is packed.  A new playlist is ready (no Wrecking Ball), my Garmin is charged, and it’s off to bed for me.  I have a 4:30 am wake up call.  Ouch.

How was your Friday?

Anyone else racing this weekend?

And the winner is…

Happy Thursday!  Everyone ready for the 4th and the weekend?

Thank you all for your thoughts on my “Choose my next Race” post.  They were great!  And the winner is-

I was definitely leaning one way but Monday was rougher than I let on in my last post.  I knew that if I chose Pozo I would probably push harder than I should right now.  Between the flat course and fast crowd plus my own desire to beat my last official PR (27:54) I may have had troubles reigning it in like I should.    I’m not saying that I’m still not going to try to push it but now I have some hills to temper my inner (wannabe) speed demon.  Ha!   Plus I have a half marathon next Saturday that I want to try and be as ready for as possible.  Did I mention it’s on my birthday?  33 and 13 miles.

Yesterday, NikeC and I met up at the gym again to workout.   After 3 miles on the treadmill, it was time for the circuit room again.   I feel like I was more consistent this time around.  Well except for the step things, I still can’t remember step aerobics.  🙂  Turns out the 90 I thought NikeC was lifting (pushing?) on the first machine  last week was 110.  I’m so weak!  I had to drop it back to 50.   We weren’t able to complete the whole circuit because once again people had troubles following 1-20.   Come on people!

Then we moved on to the hip abduction things.   I learned that those machines can turn pretty creepy when there is an older, leering man dressed in street clothes using one. Ewww.   Luckily he left fairly quickly.   But I will say that I am glad there are no mirrors in that little area.   Those motions are a little awkward in public.  🙂  After that I goofed around on ab coaster.  They are harder than they look!  Plus kind of fun in a silly way.  NikeC tried one too.   And holy crap, my abs feel sore today!

Can you tell what distance I am running?
Can you tell what distance I am running?

I picked up my race packet tonight on my way home.  It was simple and easy at the gym.  It has the weirdest bunch of food samples in it.  Even a pancake mix.  Also, there was a map of the course and I realized that it’s a bit hillier than I would have liked, dang.  Oh well, it should be fun.  I am looking forward to racing tomorrow.  I am aiming to maintain my recent times around 28:00.  Yes a PR would be awesome, but we’ll see.  🙂

What are your 4th of July plans?

Anyone else racing?

The Liebster

Happy Friday!

I was excited about getting this post up tonight, but I discovered that my blog has gone all wonky!  😦  All of my sidebars and widgets have completely disappeared and I can’t get them to come back.  Ugh.   So if you can see them when you are reading this, then I was eventually victorious.  If you see nothing, then help!!!liebster

I was recently nominated for the Liebster Award by HellyontheRun.   Thank you!  If you’ve never read her blog, head on over and check it out!  It’s great!  So here are the rules-

1. You must link back to the person who nominated you.  Check!
2. You must answer the 10 Liebster questions given to you by the nominee before you.  Look below 🙂
3. You must pick 10 bloggers to nominate.  That’s a big number…
4. You must create 10 questions for your nominees.  Gotta dig deep
5. You must go to their blogs and notify them of their nomination.  I admit that I am so bad about this…

And the questions provided by Helly-

1. When people ask you, “Why do you like running?” How do you respond?

I like knowing that I can and I love the feeling you get after a good run.    I also admit that there is pride involved.   The running community is vast and growing all the time, but there is still that look of mild disbelief mixed with a little bit of awe you get from occasionally from a non-runner.    I try to talk everyone I know into running with me.
2. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I  have always wanted to visit England but I think I would pick Kauai.   My grandparents used to live in Princeville and loved it.  I was able to visit once when I was young and have always wanted to go back.  My grandfather has passed and my grandmother is not well, so that just re-enforces my urge to go.  My mother and I have a quasi plan of going the year we turn 35/55 respectively but right now it’s mostly talk.
3. Someone received an award they cheated to get. Do you notify someone or keep quiet?

I am overly honest, so I would tell someone.  I tend to be a little blunt, so I might end up confronting them as well.  Hmmm, that might not end so well.
4. What’s your favorite food?

It says food not meal, so that would be pineapple.   I love pineapple, eat it almost every day actually.   I just don’t want it on my pizza 🙂
5. Do you speak any other language besides English? If not, what language would you like to learn?

I’m sorely out of practice now but I speak Spanish.   When I worked at the restaurant, I probably spoke Spanish more than English on a daily basis.
6. The Voice or American Idol? (or none)

I don’t watch either, but if I had to choose, it would be The Voice.  Why? Adam Levine.
7. What is the last book you read?

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover
8. If you could time travel, would you go the past or future?

Can I have both?  Preferably with a mad man in a blue box that’s bigger on the inside

9. What are you most looking forward to this year?

Paying down my credit card bills, and running of course 🙂  Breaking 2:00 in the half marathon.
10. What is your favorite holiday?

Hmmmm, any holiday that the family is together and my mom made her Beef Stroganoff.

And for the nominees are-

Don’t Blink- Just Run

Tartan Jogger

Running From it All

Did that Just Happen

irishrunnerchick

Pink Elephant on Parade

BayRunner Jamie

The Blonder Side of Life

The Road to Physical Fitness

I feel like I am forgetting so very many blogs right now.  I will do my best to notify you all within the next day or two!

And my questions-

1.  What’s is something you’ve learned about yourself from running?

2.  Name that song or artist that you can’t admit you like but sing along every time you hear?

3. What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately?

4.  Name the best piece of advice you’ve received about running? Or anything?

5.  Now name the worst-

6.  What can you absolutely not leave the house without?

7.  If you won the lottery, would you keep your job?

8.  What is your dream job?

9.  Guilty pleasure tv show?

10.  Can you play an instrument?

Thanks again to Helly for the shout out!!!

Now it’s off to bed for me, I have a race in the morning!  At least Kimi approves the shirt and bag-Photo by slackerrunnerWho has big Easter Plans?

Any races or egg hunts planned?

Pre Race Jitters

Where did this week go?  Seriously wasn’t it just Tuesday?   Now it is Saturday evening, and I feel unprepared for tomorrow‘s race.   I’ve picked up my bib, edited my playlist, and laid out my clothes.   Since I decided that a PR is unlikely with that last hill, what do I have to be nervous about?

Taper week has been completed, probably a little too well.  After Monday’s 10K, I headed back to the lake path on Tuesday,    I ran a good 4.5 miles.  Probably a little faster than I should have but they felt like good miles.   After that the week seemed to pick up speed.

I had a meeting Wednesday morning but when that was completed I was done for the day, woo hoo!!   Since I had to drive through SLO on the way home, I stopped by the Running Warehouse to exchange the handheld I had picked up on Saturday.    That thing drove me batty; taking the sleeve off was a pain and I decided to just exchange it.    Hopefully the Ultimate Direction handheld I chose will be better.   I then headed home to change and go drive tomorrow’s race course.  After getting home and changing, I checked Twitter and was ticked.    Apparently Jordan Hasay stopped by the Running Warehouse like an hour after I left!!!  Ugh!!!!  So in the past 2 weeks, Benedict Cumberbatch comes to SLO and I miss it, Jordan Hasay shows up and I miss that too 😦    Oh and Lady Gaga was nearby a few weeks ago too.   😦

Thursday I had a business mixer after work, but the night ended fun!  I met some friends for an early showing of Divergent!!!  It was really good, they did a pretty good job converting it to a movie.     I treated myself to In n Out before the movie, carb loading right?  It was so yummy but apparently I was still hungry because 20 minutes into the movie my stomach growled.  And it was loud.   So awkward.

Danger!!!!
Danger!!!!

Friday I had briefly thought about getting in a 2 mile run after work but decided against it.  Which turned out to be a good thing because I ended up working longer.  The carb loading rationale struck again when I ate a bag of chips.  😦  Today I woke feeling a little under the weather, I have felt like that for a few days now but I am in denial.  I keep telling myself that it is just nerves.  I worked this morning so I didn’t get to packet pick up until later.    It was quick and easy.    They are using a new timing system this year so I won’t have to worry about them cutting the chip off as soon as I cross the finish line.  🙂  The shirt is cool too.  This is the first time I have received a long sleeve tech tee.  And I love gray.

winecountryshirtI indulged with a little nap today too.  🙂  Then I went through the swag bag to see what was there-

wineswagNow I am in my comfy chair relaxing.  Well trying too, I am still antsy for some reason…   I have gone through the list a few times and I swear I have everything ready.  I can’t shake the feeling that I forgot something.    Guess I will find out tomorrow.   now if I can just get to sleep at a decent hour tonight…

How was your Saturday?

Anyone else ever get that antsy feeling?

Less than 12 hours to go!

Race day is just a few hours from now and I am stoked.  I worked the registration booth for a few hours today and it’s always fun.   People are so eager and excited to pick up their gear and see what this year’s shirt looks like.   Grey and oh so soft, mine might become a sleep shirt.

Woo hoo!
Woo hoo!

There are also the first timers.  Picking up their packets and asking lots of questions. Where’s the start, how does my chip work, do I wear my shirt?   Awww, I remember that feeling.   I kind of wish I could go back.   I still get super excited (and nervous) but that first race was just so new and so different.

So what the HOB Fun Run offers are a 10K, a 5K, a kids ½ mile, a 75 yard dash and a not so dirty diaper dash.  On that note, how cute is this onesie!  Even the smallest competitors receive race swag!

How cute is this?
How cute is this?

This year the adults don’t receive a medal but the kids all earn a cool dog tag for completing their race.  Plus, like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, the winners receive cash! Woo hoo!   Not that I will ever be that fast.  Last year, the same guy won the 10K and the 5K.  I think his times were 30 min and then 15:something.  Or something around that, either way, freakishly fast.

The start/ finish line goes up today, so that section of road closed early.  By the time my shift was done, the big parts were up.  By tomorrow morning there will be banners and lots of red carpet.  This is the only way I will ever be on the red carpet!

Getting Ready!
Getting Ready!

There’s also a pasta feed tonight, pancakes in the park tomorrow, face painting and bounce houses.  I am so pumped up!  I had my own spaghetti carb load meal for dinner.

carbs are good right?
carbs are good right?

I still can’t decide what to wear tomorrow; I have 3 outfits lying in various spots around the room.  I really need to try and get to bed early, got a big day ahead tomorrow.  2 races, with a great crowd and some friends running too!  I still haven’t quite worked out the logistics of 2 bib numbers and 2 timing chips, but I will.

I hope everyone had a great Saturday and a better Sunday to follow!  Sweet dreams!
