I’m going back, going back to San Diego!

Rock n Roll San Diego 2017 was my first time running a Rock n Roll race and it was awesome.

I was a little concerned going into it because it was going to be one of my biggest races yet.Β  It was also flat- by my standards- and in a large city- again by my standards.Β  All of which are outside of my comfort zone.Β  Nothing to worry about it, it was all awesome.Β  πŸ‘

So when I found out that I had the chance to go back to San Diego to run it again, I did a little jig.

Now, Rock n Roll San Diego takes place the weekend of June 2-3.Β  Which is a month after Big Sur.Β  I am not sure how I am going to be feeling so as of now my plan is just go for a nice stroll and enjoy running through all the San Diego neighborhoods again.

I’m also looking forward to checking out the new things Rock n Roll has in store for 2018.

To name a few-

  • A new Marathon finisherΒ zone with massages and pizza–(ok but what about half marathon-ers? 🀣)
  • New corral markers that light up!Β
  • Clearer aid station signage
  • You can rock out to on-course mile markers!Β
  • You can also take a quiz to pick your Rock ‘n’ Roll Spotify BPM playlist that will help inspire you to rock your next run:Β http://runrocknroll.co/5eux3X

Is it June yet???

Big Sur Marathon Training-Week 4

I designed my plan with flexibility.Β Β  I know I like to be able to move my days around depending on how work goes or if my stomach is being a complete asshat.

That said, I didn’t plan on basically chucking the plan out the window in week 4.Β  I am so behind on miles.Β  Don’t freak out, don’t freak out.

I mentioned last week that I ended week 3 feeling broken thanks to a crappy treadmill and some shoe issues.Β  People, getting out bed on Monday hurt.Β  Walking around work hurt.Β  What the hell????? Don’t freak out, don’t freak out.

The plan-haha

week 4

Life-

Monday- Rest Haha, I worked and I rested.Β  I tried not to make any sudden movements and just get through the day.Β  I had to put the thought of my pretty new shoes out my head.

Tuesday- PT Otherwise, more of the same.

Wednesday- 4 miles on the bikeΒ  My lump on a log- ness was getting to me so I went for a very short ride on the bike just to test the legs out.Β Β Β  I followed up with half of my PT exercises.

Thursday- 2 miles I’m feeling very anti treadmill right now but wanted to test the leg considering I had a race on Saturday.Β  Oh crap.Β Β  While I wish I hadn’t been running on super uneven sidewalks, the miles were ok.Β  I always think I run differently at night due to the limited light.Β  IΒ  love my Knuckle Lights but I still feel like I run a little off.Β  That could also be that I don’t run enough in the dark to get used to it though.

Friday- Rest For doing next to nothing all week, I was super tired.Β  That stupid cold/flu better not have caught up to me.Β  I worked the early shift at work and headed home to try and get some sleep before the early morning of race day errr, well supported long run. πŸ˜‹

Saturday- Mission 10 miler– race recap to come.

Sunday- 3.1 miles I finally put some miles in the Altra’s.Β Β  I took it super easy as it was my first time in zero drop shoes but I surprisingly it took over 2 miles for me to feel any calf/achilles tightness.Β  Mini spoiler- that happened within 1/4 mile the day before during the race.Β  I also took it easy because I still wasn’t feeling well- another mini spoiler?Β  All in all this was decent recovery run.

15.4 miles for the week.Β  So basically, I ran a long run and skipped everything else.Β  Only 9 miles short.Β  Don’t freak out.

How was your week?<

Race #2 for the weekend!

I was feeling a little of that leg pain from last week on Sunday morning when Mai and I were walking to and from the BibRave brunch.Β  So after getting back to the hotel, I rested my legs until it was time to head to the start line.Β  I still cleared my daily step goal well before the race started.Β  πŸ˜›

<

Learning from the previous day, we left the hotel with plenty of time to walk to the start line area giving us time for gear drop, bathroom stops, the We Run Social meet up, and whatever else we needed.Β Β Β  And unlike the previous day, we accomplished it all with time to spare! And I met Helly! If you look really close in the We Run Social pic, you can see my hat in the back.Β  πŸ˜›Β Β Β  Then we separated and Mai made her way to her corral and Kate and I went to squeeze our way through the people towards our corral to wait.

The second I knew I had convinced Kate to fly to Las Vegas from Texas and run her very first half marathon, I knew I was running it with her, no matter what.Β Β  In the week leading up to the race, she was worried about slowing me down but I said to not even worry about the pace, we were aiming for ‘party speed’.Β  😎

With an impressive fire show for each corral start, we were off!Β  That said this is going to be a little different from my usual recaps.Β Β  Mile 1 was our fastest, mile 2 was our slowest and everything else fell in between.

Recent events moved the start line up to New York New York but the course still went south towards the Las Vegas sign before turning around and coming back.Β  These miles were quiet and dark as a moment of silence for Las Vegas.Β  Which made the cheaters we observed just past mile 1 even worse.Β Β  The course was an out and back and this part of the street had a large center divider.Β  Just past the first water station, 3 people just jumped on over to the other side and joined the runners on the way back into town.Β  WTH????!Β  Kate and I and 3 runners behind us were like did we really just see that?

Then came mile 2.Β  We both admitted we could use a bathroom.Β  Waiting in the corrals had been long and there were no port-a -potties near the corrals.Β  So we stopped.Β  And waited forever.Β  Seriously…this was a 20 minute mile.Β Β  7 of that was non moving time according to my Garmin.Β  The bathrooms were set up in an odd way that both sides of the course could access them but it didn’t make sense for lines and was causing serious confusion.Β  And apparently we picked the wrong line because the person before me took forever.Β  To the point where the lady in line behind me wanted to knock on the bathroom door.Β Β Β  And can I just say that entering a port a potty in the dark is like entering a scary unknown land? πŸ˜›

Finally, we were on our way.Β  We were running 1 minute, walking 1 minute.Β  Hit the 5K mark and all was shiny.Β Β  A little past that I told Kate she officially had less than 10 miles to go.Β  Another runner near us thanked me for saying that. πŸ˜€

3.6 is when disaster struck.Β Β  I heard a very verbal inhale, saw a wince and then Kate was limping.Β Β  Her right shin was not happy and not happy in a very bad way.Β  We started walking.Β  I said let’s walk to 4.5 and see how you feel.Β  The answer was no better.Β  I actually tried to get her to stop but she was having none of that.Β Β  All right, then let’s go slowly.

So we walked.Β Β  We embraced the party speed and took in the sights of the Strip.Β  All of the casinos and all of their lights.Β  Counting the CVS’s and Walgreens turned into our version of the license plate game.Β  No, seriously, why are there so many within such a short distance from each other? And why were more people cutting the course?!?!😑

I took a ton of pictures.Β  Except the sketchy mile.Β  The Fremont area was awesome and worth the sketch mile to get there though.Β  We got water at every aid station and Gatorade.Β  We stopped at a medical tent and Kate had them apply some Icy Hot to see if it would help.Β Β  Every now and then I would jog in place just to reset my feet.Β  I had worn my old Adidas and they’re too big, not exactly built for walking, my feet were sliding around.Β  Jogging every now and again helped ease some of the pressure my feet were feeling.

We had a Ghost bride moment too.Β  I looked up to see a runner dressed like a bride just standing forlornly all alone up ahead.Β  The way the light was hitting her, she looked a little ghost like.Β  So then we starting cracking jokes that we needed the Winchester boys.

We were walking, we were slower than planned and Kate was hurt but if you look at the race pictures the photographers took, we’re smiling in all of them.Β Β Β  Kate kept telling me to leave her behind and run ahead and I kept saying hell no.Β  We started together, we’re finishing together.

And we did- 3:27:49πŸ™‚ We collected our awesome spinning medal and went straight to the med tent so Kate could get ice on her leg.Β  Then we headed out through the long staging area getting the goodies.Β Β  Once again, no bags were provided to carry everything but I had come prepared- I had shoved 2 dog bags (clean of course) into my belt so that way we could shove the snacks all in those.Β  Then we headed for our Remix medals and then found a spot to rest before beginning the walk back to the hotel.Β  Where was a taxi when you needed one?

So this wasn’t the race we had expected but it was still an awesome race.Β

Rock n Roll Las Vegas 5K Recap

My first night race! My first race in another state!

The 5K was up first on Saturday evening and would be followed by the headliner concert with The Goo Goo Dolls.  Kate was super organized so we had a plan of exactly when to leave our hotel with plenty of time to get to the Las Vegas Festival grounds.    Or so we thought.

The monorail platform was jam packed with runners, spectators and a few daring Las Vegas travelers.  Needless to say it took a few monorail passes before we managed to get on one and then it was like sardines in a can.  Or even closed than that.  I jokingly call it the “friendliest” monorail ride ever.  Seriously, we were so close, there was awkward touching happening.   We were all cracking jokes about it but it was still super awkward.  And each monorail stop just had more people trying to squeeze in, we had no space!!!

Finally we arrived with minutes to spare and all rushed through the casino to cross the street to the festival grounds only to be greeted by a giant line trying to get through security.  They were checking everyone’s bags, waving medal detector wands over everyone and had made people dump out their water.  They let me keep mine but I left it in my gear bag which we tossed to Kate’s parents as it was past start time and we had no idea where the gear drop trucks were.  They had taken a taxi to the festival, smart people.  πŸ˜›

We hustled over to the second set of corrals and looked for Kate’s corral.  One security person tried to make me go line up in mine- my original corral was 4- but not only had it already left, with my leg being whiny all week, the plan was to run the race with Kate and we were aiming for party speedπŸ˜€.  All race info said it wouldn’t be a problem to drop back.  Except to this one person.  Grrr.  She turned around and we jumped into the corrals.   As we made our way to the start line, we soon realized we should have had some lights or glow sticks to brighten up our outfits.  Oops, too late now!  After a few minutes in the corrals and an energetic countdown, we were off!

The course was an out back on the road behind the Strip, so it took you behind Circus Circus.  I had no idea that thing has an actual Big Top until I was running by it.  I know this was a night race but I was still surprised by how dark it was.  A light wouldn’t have been a bad thing, that road is not lit up like the Strip.  It still had music stations- DJ’s, speakers and live bands along the way to liven it up, plus checking out all the runners in their glowing outfits was fun, it was just darker than I thought.

I told Kate to set the pace and I would do whatever she wanted but at one point during mile 1, I looked at my watch and tried to subtly slow her down.  Hey, you’re running your first half tomorrow! I needed to be less subtle.  πŸ˜›  She heard her GPS app speak and then knew what I was saying.  But we were having fun.

One thing that helped reign us in was the lack of water.  There was one water stop- at mile 2.   And even though it was an out and back course, there was a center divider so you could only access the water at mile 2 not on both sides.  It was still 70 degrees at race start.  And security had made people dump their water.  I left mine behind thinking oh Rock n Roll has this.  See a problem?

Once back into the festival grounds, we looped around the back lot a bit to add distance before passing a KISS cover band and running under the giant guitar guy towards the finish.

Finish- 39:56

I tried a few selfies with the medal but the lighting was not my friend that nightπŸ˜‚

Once across the line, we picked up our medals and they gave us a few snacks and a bottle of water.  Then we hung and waited a bit for The Goo Goo Dolls to take the stage.  They still sound good!   We hung for a bit before heading back on thankfully less crowded monorail. πŸ‘Œ

Race #1 of the weekend complete. Half recap soon to come.  πŸ™‚

Week 40- Plot Twist

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock n Roll San Jose 13.1?????????
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 5K
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 13.1!!!!!

People, I ran twice last week.  Twice!  That was not the plan.  Not all.

Although last weekend’s long run of 8- should have been 10- had gone well and my back wasn’t any worse after it, I was doubting San Jose.  The idea of sitting in a car for hours, then sleeping on a hotel bed then running a race on a course that is purported to flat and fast ( I hate flat) just sounded bad.  So I let the registration window lapse and canceled both of those hotels that I had booked.

It was the right decision.  That’s not to say I didn’t race last week.  No one ever said I was that smart.  πŸ˜›

In all honesty, I needed more miles than I got in last week.  I took a chance on something work wise and didn’t get the best news.   I needed to get out of my head for a while.  Still do, so hopefully that can happen this week.

Monday- Rest  I planned on running- it was Monday after all and I try not to miss Mondays but work ran almost an hour late and I haven’t quite prepared myself for night runs yet.   I need to find and charge both Knuckle Lights and get a better reflective vest.

Tuesday- Rest Oh crap, ouch.  I was trying to show something to a customer when I felt a sharp pull in my back.  I spent the next 5 minutes helping them and trying not to cry actual tears.   When it still hurt even more than the normal level these days at closing, I took another rest day.

Wednesday- 3 miles Nice and easy miles.   Running actually makes my back feel a little looser, I wish I could have run a few more miles last week.    And funnily enough, the sharp pain of the day before seemed to have really loosened things up in my back.  Who knew?

Thursday- Rest Sometimes life happens and running doesn’t. I may have done something a little last minute too.

Friday- Haha.  Another open to close so no to running.  Although I did think about it and that was before the not so good news dropped.  Then I really thought about it but ending up indulging in a giant quesadilla at a Mexican restaurant instead.

Saturday- Packet Pickup  And some wandering around SLO doing some shopping.  While I didn’t get in a shakeout run, I definitely got my steps in for the day.   Packet pickup was at the Running Warehouse and the place was nuts.  Of course I had to go inside- I somehow lost my Body Glide and I needed to replace it.  πŸ˜›   Then I may have done a thing at Best Buy on the way home.  Who said you needed to relax before a race?  Besides I was treating it like a training run, right?

Sunday- City to the Sea 13.1 Race recap will be up Thursday but let’s just say nothing went how I thought it would. πŸ™‚

16.2 miles for the week.   Which over only 2 runs doesn’t suck but isn’t exactly smart either.  My Slacker handle really fits these days.  Maybe I should rename myself- Confessions of a Chaotic Runner.  πŸ˜›

In other news, I did get my PT referral started last week so I am finally on track that way.   We are also changing the dosage on my thyroid medication so it’s time to ride that roller coaster again.   That said, fingers crossed I have a more consistent running week.   The thoughts in my head still need it.

How was your week?

Any head clearing tips?
