Tired Legs- Step 1

I finally pulled it off!   My head cold may have set me back a bit but I woke up Monday with a plan.    I decided I may as well make the most of this last week of vacation running wise.    So I headed out for a long run in the afternoon.

I was still feeling a little yucky so I was planning on taking it slow and walking whenever I needed too.   I wanted to run between 5-8 and then get the puppy and run/ jog with her for another 2-4.  Ok, maybe I was overly ambitious but I was going to run loops around my neighborhood so if I needed to bail I could.

Great start to Tuesday's run before the storm came back-
Great start to Tuesday’s run before the storm came back-

It wasn’t exactly cold but it wasn’t warm either.  We have been enjoying some lingering rain systems here which is great because we desperately need it but hard because it’s so not the norm.   I figured I would be ok in shorts and I decided to test out the new long-sleeved top that I has picked up.   I knew I had to make myself keep it on though.   🙂   I figured I would get hot soon and I did around mile 3.    I kept an easy pace and took some walk breaks.   I felt tired but pretty good.  I have been running the same 5 mile route lately so I know where all the splits should be.   I noticed that my Garmin was lagging a bit, guess it didn’t appreciate the cloud cover.   The mileage geek in me had to re-map my route after my run since it seemed off.   Oh, and while I may have felt warmer on top, my legs stayed a little cold.  I had a minor chafing issue? What gives, it wasn’t 100º and that is usually the only time I have issues with my legs- ugh!

It took me a little longer (1:15:58) to complete 7 miles than I thought so I had to hustle to get the puppy.    My mom had her ready so I grabbed her and off we went.  Due to the rain and setting sun we only managed a little over 3 miles.   We were slower than the day before but that was all me and not the dog.  🙂  When we turned around to head back she looked sad that we weren’t going farther.  😦  But long run officially done!!

Can you see me? hehe

Tuesday was another rainy one- woo hoo!  In keeping with my plan to get used to running on tired legs, I headed out for a run.  I have never run the day after a longer run so I wasn’t too sure how it was going to go.    My pace was actually better than I thought it would be but wow, my ankles were kind of tired.  That was the only part of me that was really achy.   There were clouds rolling in and ridiculous wind- I damn near lost my hat3x- so I called it at 5 instead of 6.   I am kind of digging this 5 mile route.  Too bad I am about to only get it on the weekends.

Yeah, this happened tonight
Yeah, this happened tonight

So 3 days in a row meant Wednesday was a rest day for me.   I don’t want to push it too much.  Plus that worked out well because my mother had her end of season tennis banquet and I help her a little with that.  Oh and if we are counting- I have now watched 4 cheesy Christmas movies- love it!

How’s your weather?  Do you like running in the wind?

Am I the only one watching an excess amount of holiday movies right now?

Happy Wednesday!

Night Night November

Where did November go?! Today should not be the first day of December- I’m not ready!   But, time marches on so here is my November Recap.

Miles- 55.1
Race-  GREW From the Vines 5KHikes-  2 East Cuesta and Cerro AltoNovember recapSo November was kind of a toss-up.  I started the month feeling a little under the weather, so only logged 3.4 miles the first week.  I also figured that meant I finally wouldn’t be sick on vacation.  The following week I started my training plan but the first 2 weeks were fairly easy.   Last week was supposed to step up the mileage and it coincided with my first week of vacation.  I tried really hard to stick to the plan but the stupid head cold of Thanksgiving came back with a vengeance Saturday and Sunday.   Saturday wasn’t wasted because I did enjoy some shopping with my mother.  I was a little confused- where were all the people who were supposed to be out and about?   I may have treated myself to a new running outfit.   Both pieces are by Reebok and the pants are super warm.    The top is long-sleeved and the exact style of an original clearance rack cheapie I picked up almost 2 years ago.    I have worn that light pink one so many times, my mother can no longer stand the sight of it.  🙂   fastpuppySunday dawned gray and rainy, and I had been up coughing most of the night.    Between my asthma and GERD, every time I get a little cold I develop a hacking cough.  Geez, I have issues, nice.  I knew there was no way a long run was happening but I thought I could handle a good puppy walk.    Except the puppy didn’t want to walk, she wanted to run.   I finally just decided to jog with her.  Every so often she would look my way like – “see, I can run with you”.   It was a pretty good run.    I also bundled up before heading out.  I tested out the new pants and wore multiple layers on top plus an ear warmer over my ears.   My bottom half was the warmest part of me, though.   It only rained on us for a short while.  IMG_7710Those 4 puppy miles brought my November total to 55.1 miles.  Not what I had hoped for but better than October (by a mile)!  Another bonus about November?  I hit my yearly goal of 750 miles!!!  Miles to date for 2014- 776.8!!

Woo hoo!   Time to move on to December.  I have one last week of forced vacation 😦 and then it’s back to work for me.  There is Christmas to prepare for, both of my parents have birthdays this week plus the plethora of Christmas/ end of the year parties are starting.  I also have my colonoscopy to look forward to in a couple of weeks.  All that being said, it’s time to step up the mileage.. and see if I can really follow through!  Oh and it’s time to watch a bunch of silly made for tv Christmas movies.  🙂

How was your November? Are you ready for December?

Any Reindeer runs in your future or are you done racing for 2014?

Intervals and a Big Oops

Hooray, it’s Friday!!!!

Who’s racing this weekend?

Today was a pretty good day.  I worked the early shift at work and was even able to get off a little early.   I have an awesome boss.  I mean I really do, yesterday, while parallel parking I bumped her car.   Like our bumpers were kissing.  I swear I checked before turning off my car.  I never felt a bump, apparently I am just that skillful at backing up. Ha!  No damage at all but it was a momentary panic attack.  Did I mention it’s review time?!  Part of today was spent doing battle with my usual Friday temptation-one day I will resist, I will be strong.  It just wasn’t today.

Cookie Friday!!!!
Cookie Friday!!!!

I have however been strong on the no soda during the week.  🙂  I have not had any soda since I randomly quit at 10:00 AM Tuesday morning.  No headaches to speak of, but I have been draggggggging.   With that being said, I did make it to the gym on Thursday night for an easy interval run.

intervals
Prettier than a treadmill

Normally I manually change the speed anytime I want but I decided to try the interval option instead.   First question it asked was what my weight was?  Nosy much?  Why does my weight affect the speed settings on a treadmill?  And why do they call it jogging speed?  For the sake of all of our delicate egos they should call it something like “fast” and “lightening fast” not “jogging” and “running”.  Ok, mini rant over.  Having to push the button just once to change speeds was nice though.

My intervals looked something like this-

Length (miles) Speed
1.25 5.8
.75 6.3
.25 5.8
.75 6.3
.5 5.8
1.00 6.3
.50 5.8

Total- 5 miles not counting warmup or cool down.

(glad to hear I’m not the only one turns off the watch for those!!)

I admit to taking it slightly easy.  Even with having a cup of coffee in the morning, I am seriously missing the caffeine.   While driving to the gym that night, I told myself I only had to run 4 not the 5 that I planned.  Once I was running though, I figured I could run 5 and thankfully there was nothing freaky on the tv’s.   Whoever is changing the channels needs to stop, Wednesday night, the tv had Devour-Return of the Man Eating Snake on.  I thought I was going to have nightmares about albino pythons eating crocodiles.   Yuck!

All in all it was a good run, it felt like productive miles not just filler miles.  There were some runs in January that felt like mostly filler.  Today was like most Fridays- a rest day.   After leaving work, I fought the Friday crowd at Trader Joe’s- not a good idea- before heading home.   The mail delivered presents!!!!!

Oh, wow that's pink
Oh, wow that’s pink

I just ordered them Tuesday night so the shipping was great!  Have to say that these are my first pairs of compression socks.   Oh the shame  🙂  Anytime my pics showed me in knee socks, they were derby socks.   I am eager to test them out on my long run this weekend.  The weather is calling for rain on Saturday so the timing of that run is a little up in the air.  The rain wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for my proclivity for slipping.   But we desperately need rain, so no complaints here.   Even if it means I have to dodge rocks on the road while driving to work  🙂

Any one have big plans this weekend?

Any ideas on how I can learn to like coffee faster?

My Happy Place

It rained!!!!!  Only for a bit and it was more of a mist but it rained!   It happened while I was working Saturday, I tried to take a picture but it just looks gray.   We’re in the middle of a drought so any rain is exciting.  Granted I wasn’t in my home town and it turns out it didn’t get any rain.  Driving home in the rain and fog was less exciting.  I was behind a car going 40 in a 60, but that was actually ok as I could hardly see the car itself due to the fog.

It really is raining!
It really is raining!

I arrived home to find new toys in the mail!  My new belt had arrived.  I had searched numerous web sites and asked  fellow bloggers opinions as I was super frustrated by my current hydration belt.   After checking things out, RunningFromitAll (awesome blog) recommended iFitness.  Duh! They made my basic running belt that I really liked aside from it being too small for longer races.  I had forgotten about them.  So I checked out their website, turns out they changed their name to Fitletic.  After mulling things over, I ordered myself a new belt.

New gear!
New gear!

Now this is not a hydration belt.  I can order the add on’s for that but I think I am going to try it without.  There are 5 water stations in my next half marathon, so I figure between those and a little handheld with Gatorade, I will be ok.  At least that is the plan.  We’ll see how it works out after the race.  It has 2 pockets and some straps for gels, as well as race bib holders.   I probably won’t use the bib holders, I tend to wear my belt really low on my hips.   My phone does fit much better in this belt as well.

I was torn between the track and the gym for my run, but I really wanted to test out my new belt.  The track won.  Which is more than fine by me, the track is my “happy place”.  I was aiming for between 4-5 miles and was thinking about trying some 800’s.  I felt pretty good after my first mile, so I decided to just try and maintain pace as long as I could.  I had a larger bottle of water to carry but it was driving me bonkers so I left it on a table by the track.

I hit mile 4 and still felt good, so I kept going.  My mother had come with me for this workout and I noticed then that she was doing her sprints.  She does those when she nears the end of her workout.  I rounded the south curve and hit mile 5, and she was sitting on the table waiting.  It was too good of run to quit so I pushed through to a full 10K.   Mile 6 was my best mile out of the 6, 9:38 🙂  My overall pace was better than my previous run on the treadmill.  But I also love the track now, like I said, it’s a happy place.  I hated it in high school, but then I hated running too.  I have always been a slacker.  I was actually asked a couple times if I wanted to run track back then and I was like “why the heck would I do that?”.  I ran the required amount for tennis and softball and that was it.  Not a foot more.  Now I wish I had maybe given it a shot then, maybe it wouldn’t be so hard now.

Today was a designated Slacker day.  I spent the day shopping.  Prior to getting healthier and losing weight, I use to say that window shopping was exercise, all that walking up and down the street right?  My Nike Fuelband quickly put that theory to rest.  Shopping days are actually some of my laziest days.  I earn more fuel points at work, and I sit at a desk a lot.   Today, I discovered that trying on clothes is a work out, haha!  I went to Dick’s to look for a new pair of running capris.  I tried on 9 pairs, that was just ridiculous.   I ended up going with the Nike Filament Capri, which was funny because they were the pair I liked the least on the rack and based on fabric.  Once on, though, they felt awesome.  Now to see if they run awesome.

I also picked up some new work clothes for a steal 🙂  and ate some yummy food.  I picked up a few things to finish the mini room makeover, but still haven’t been able to get the headboard to work.  All in all, a very good Slacker Sunday.

So yummy, I snacked a bit first :)
