Week 37- Hobble, Hobble, Ouch

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock n Roll San Jose 13.1???
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 5K
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 13.1!!!!!

As much fun as last week’s trail race was, it took me much longer to recover from it than I had thought I would need.  I was walking funny for days.   I ended up taking an extra rest day last week and only running 3 days.  But there was a very unhappy twinge from my left shin area that I’ve learned that ignoring it can lead to bad things.  Another day off was the better option.

Monday- 2.3 miles  Ha!  I could barely walk straight but I was hoping that I could try to run it out.   I managed 2 laps of the lake but it was more a hobble-walk-tiny jog.  I still felt so stiff and sore, my legs just weren’t working right.

Tuesday- Rest  And flats again to work.  Still had trouble getting on and off my stool. πŸ˜›

Wednesday- Rest  I was moving better so I planned on trying a run after work.   I even changed.    Once in my car, I had one of my OCD moments where I forgot something very important so I jumped out of the car and ran back to check.  Pain shot up my lower left leg.  Enough to make me doubt the intelligence of a run.  I debated it on the drive back to home town.  I ultimately decided to play it safe and decided not to run.

Thursday- 3.1 miles  I was definitely moving better and the odd leg pain hadn’t reappeared so I set out for an easy run after work.   I was back to following doc’s orders of taking it easy so I went back to 1 minute run/ 1 minute walk.    I was sluggish but overall I felt ok.  I just kept it nice and easy.  I also had a vanity moment where I tried to save a good hair day while running but it drove me nuts and only lasted a mile.  πŸ˜›

Friday- Rest  This day was odd as we said goodbye to my boss after 3 years.    So now, we’ll see what happens next.

Saturday- 8ish miles I planned on running my long run on Sunday so I decided to sleep in and catch up on some things.   I ended up spending the day shopping in SLO with my mother.  Not exactly catching up on rest but fun.  Once I got home I randomly decided there was just enough time left in the day to get in my long run.  So I changed and took my car across town.

I was under hydrated and not properly fueled but this was surprisingly one of my best long runs in months.    I stuck to my 1 run/ 1 walk intervals and just trucked on.   I was probably running too fast as my pace wasn’t too far off my typical long runs.    It all felt pretty good though.  The only irritations were accidentally hitting the lap button halfway through and then completely stopping the watch when some girls shrieked in the riverbed.   Turns out they were just trying to carry a piece of driftwood out and dropped it.   Well, they freaked me out!

Sunday- Rest  I thought about running.  I did.   My leg was a little ache-y.  I was a little tired.   I took the parents to the movies.  When my dad mentions in passing that he wants to see a movie in the actual theater, I will make it happen.   We saw American Assassin.   Then I was in a popcorn coma and ended up taking a nap.  Oops!

13.7 miles for the week.  I miss the miles of that missed run but I know my leg was a little angry after the race.  So, maybe don’t run mountains after 2 months of lackluster training months?  Haha.  🀣

How was your week? Do anything fun?

Longest it’s taken you to recover from a shorter race?

Week 36- Not Quite

Upcoming Races-

  • SLO Ultra 5 Mile
  • Rock n Roll San Jose 13.1???
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 5K
  • Rock N Roll Las Vegas 13.1!!!!!

I had this cutesy little plan that if you lined up weeks 34, 35 and 36 the title modifiers would all add up to say “Kind of Back To Normal“.  Except this week wasn’t the normal that I wanted it to be hence the title change.  While I ran 4 days, when you add up the mileage it looks quite sad.  And adding a run on Sunday became laughable when I was hobbling around and had trouble just walking.

Anyways, moving on.   Last week was an odd one.  We found out on Tuesday that my boss is turning in her 2 weeks so the week just felt a little off.   Well, all weeks after a 3 day weekend feel off but this one felt more off.  Then I realized I seriously overbooked my Saturday and couldn’t figure out how to fix it.  I had a race, a shift at the Avocado Margarita Festival, a bed delivery and a possible haircut appointment.    I needed a clone.. or a teleporter.  Everything took place in a different town.

Monday- 3.1 miles  With the day off for Labor Day, I had thought about getting a long run out of the way early in the week but then I overslept.  It was another triple digit day and my motivation flagged as the day went on.  At the last minute I threw on running clothes and managed to get out the door for a late evening 5k.  It was short but I am glad I did something other than laze around like a sloth.

Tuesday-  Rest I rarely run the Tuesday after a 3 day weekend.  Work is usually crazy and runs late.  Theory held.  πŸ˜›

Wednesday- 2.0 miles This was supposed to be 4 miles but work ran late and this was all I squeezed in before the light really faded once I got back to town.   Oops.

It looks so much brighter in this pic than it was

Thursday- 1.5 miles Failed kitten rescue!  I set out to run but only made it about 3/4 of a mile up the hill before I heard a little meow then saw a tiny kitten in the storm drain.   He looked like he needed help so I tried to rescue him.  I managed to coax him out of the storm drain and noticed he was limping but he wouldn’t let me near him.   I followed/chased him through bushes, freaked out a dog in a yard, almost fell down a little hill, got odd looks from other runners passing by but couldn’t find him.  He went into stealth mode!  After more than 30 minutes I gave up, sad.  By then it was getting dark so I just headed back to the car.

Friday- Rest  I worked then out to Avila Beach to pick up my race packet.  Packet might be a misnomer- it was a bib and shirt.  And I almost got lost in the parking lot- a few more signs would have been nice.

Saturday- SLO Ultra 5 Miler Recap to come but I will say -oh my quad—the hills.

Then I attempted a quick change before heading to work town for the Avocado Margarita Festival.  Where I had to park way too far away and book it down to the volunteer tent in flip flops.   My haircut appointment was a no go and my dad was a champ and met the delivery guys to accept the bed delivery.    Even though that was an adventure in itself.  His solution to making sure that the cats or dog didn’t get out while the guys were there was to just have them deliver the new bed to the garage.  Then when I got home we carried it into the house and set it up.  πŸ˜›

Sunday- Haha!  Oh my god, I’m broken.  I can’t move.   I can’t even remember the last time I’ve been this sore.  Like I wish my bathroom had those handicap accessible bars in it for I need to use the restroom.  πŸ˜‚  I kept telling myself that I was going to run but the very idea of going down my driveway actually scared me.  Ouch!!!

11.6 miles for the week.  Haha.  I really should have run that long run on Monday.  Maybe I also should have looked at the elevation profile of the race sooner than Friday too.   I might have anticipated my broken-ess a little more.   Right now I am just hoping I can walk normally on Monday.  πŸ˜›

How was your week?

When was the last time you felt abnormally sore?

Rambling On 15

Maybe this will be a weekly thing until I get my act together? πŸ˜›

Just when I think I know what’s going on- wham!
My boss turned in her notice so now I have no idea what’s going to happen.

I had an interview for another position but now it looks like it’s changed.  Plus talk about the timing.

Back to my car… I bought it in June.  Just cleared 5000 miles. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Should have taken an after pic too

I have a race on Saturday!  Right? I know what you’re thinking.  I’m trying to figure out how to get my bib.  Freaky long lunch on Friday or show super early to race on Saturday and gear check something for the first time. πŸ€”

Speaking of Saturday-  I have the race, a volunteer shift at the Avocado Margarita Festival, just found out my bed is being delivered and my hair dresser may try to squeeze me in.     All of those things take place in 3 different towns. I have a problem and I haven’t figured out how to fix it.

What are you doing this weekend?

Week 33- Sidelined

If there is an upside to not running, it’s the fewer loads of laundry you have to do on the weekend.

Gotta find the shiny side, right?  Or try to.  πŸ˜›

So yeah, thanks to the UTI from hell and me not checking about the medication first, last week was super Slacker like.    But maybe I needed it?  I didn’t really have time to worry about my mysterious groin pain issue as the medication issue forced me to rest anyways.

Work wise, things are a little more under control after this week.  I finally managed to get my inbox to 50 ish.  Which is still not great but it’s way better than it was.     I treat my inbox like a to-do list so the triple digits were starting to get to me.   Now if I could just get my piles of paper under control.  πŸ˜›

So let’s get to the very abbreviated work out week-

Monday- 1.3 miles  I felt crap all day but I was trying to ignore it.  I’d been living in denial for quite some time.  I headed for the lake path to get in some miles but it only took one loop to admit defeat.  I had a problem and I likely needed medicine.  Grrr.

Tuesday- Rest Made it to the doctor and they confirmed my suspicions and my denial.  Ha!  Never been so thankful for medicine…until I realized the side effects.

Wednesday- More rest.

Thursday- 3 mile walk  I had an appointment with my neurologist so I was home a little earlier than normal.  I figured I would try a walk.   Walking is not running.   I listened to a podcast to try not being so bored but I so wanted to be running.

Friday- Rest Holy crap, I was so sore.  What gives- it was only a walk!!  And I know I have a hip imbalance but for the most part I can ignore it during and after running.  After a little walk, I felt like I was walking crooked!

Saturday/Sunday- Rest I really did think about a trying for a long walk but in the end I just didn’t.  I napped a lot which seems to be my MO these days.  I have to get a new bed.  I just keep waking up in pain and feeling more tired than I did before.   I just keep hoping to make it Labor day and hoping that there will good sales.  I didn’t exactly plan for this purchase. Grrr.

4.3 miles for the week.  Yes, I’m counting those walking miles, they freakin’ hurt me.  πŸ˜›

Now as for this week, the medication has been completed but the effects linger so I think I am going to do some walking/jogging intervals.    Fingers crossed!

How was your week?

Any good running?

Week 32- Ragged

I was so glad that I didn’t have any races to worry about this week.

With all of the conversion craziness and trying to stay somewhat ready for Salinas Valley, I was beginning to feel a little run down.    As much as I want to run all the miles to get my numbers back up, I also need to not break myself.  And this was my thought process before the stomach flu tore it’s way through the office.  So glad I’d already decided to keep things chill this week.  πŸ˜›

Monday- 3.55 miles  I had taken the day off as a vacation day post Salinas with the hope of getting some rest and catching up on some things I woefully behind on.  Umm, not so much.  But I did make it to the new trail in run town for a few miles up and down.   The trail is great, the drive to the parking lot though is ridiculous.

Tuesday- Rest Sticking to any sort of post work schedule has been difficult.

Wednesday- Rest  I am sure I did something but I don’t remember what it was. πŸ˜›

Thursday- 3.1 miles  I had zero desire to run after work.  None.  The long days were catching up to me.   But I changed and started driving towards home.     I ended up at the River path and told myself a mile was better than nothing.   I started out walking and had a hard time convincing myself to run but eventually I started.  I expected the crappiest run ever however I ended up running the smoothest, most consistent miles since marathon training last year.      I stopped once when I thought I heard a stray kitten.  If you follow me on IG then you might know that I spent a few moments looking for it in the bushes before thinking that this might be a good way for creepers to lure people into the bushes.  πŸ˜›   Ok, the exhaustion is making me delusional.

Friday- Rest Yay, it’s Friday!  It was the first time I worked the late shift without opening too in months.  I couldn’t remember what time to set my alarm for, ha!

Saturday- 4 miles  After spending some time shopping in SLO, I hit up a path in work town that I haven’t been on since last year.   I love it but there are parts that I don’t feel comfortable by myself in the evenings.  This time it was the early afternoon and I took my mother along for the ride.  πŸ˜›    The route is great and very scenic but about a mile from the car my left leg did that buckling in pain thing again.  WTH?!  I hadn’t felt it all week and I now I felt like it was going to knock me flat.   Grrr.

Sunday- Rest  I was still super tired and with my leg acting all wonky, I decided not to push it.    There are races I would like to run in October and I can’t do that if my leg is still giving me fits.    Stupid leg.  Where’s my foam roller?

10.65 miles for the week.  Not great but not too bad either.  I stayed upright during the stomach flu epidemic and my leg didn’t start screaming until Saturday, so I was able to get in some decent short miles.    Now if I could just figure out what is going on with my leg.

How was your week?

Any tips for odd leg pain in the groin area?πŸ˜›
