Week 25- Speed Bump

Upcoming Races-

  • Rock to the Pier 10K
  • Salinas Valley Half Marathon

So, I may have underestimated just how much work and brain power I was going to need for this system conversion.  I fell a little off the workout wagon last week.  Ok, a lot.   By the end of the week, my brain was fried.  In fact, in a training class on Thursday I asked the dumbest question.  Seriously- everyone turned around and stared at me.  It took me a moment or two to figure out that I was basically confusing an apple for a granola bar.  Total blonde moment.    I’ve only been in the business for 10 years, I felt like an idiot.   Grrr.

Combine work training with the heatwave and I had a serious lack of motivation this week.  I kind of just wanted to sit in my comfy chair on the floor and do nothing.

Monday- 2.3 miles In an effort to adjust to the heat I bypassed the lovely 60 degree weather in work town and headed for the lake path.  It was 94 there which wasn’t pleasant but it wasn’t horrible either.  I was also crawling though.  I probably walked more than I ran.    I was truly surprised by how many people were out walking their dogs.  It was too hot for them!

Tuesday- Rest First day long training session.  Somehow I stayed awake throughout the whole thing!  My hand cramped from taking so many notes.

Wednesday- Rest  I had planned on running but by the end of the day I was just not feeling it.   When work ran late, it seemed like a sign.  I went home.

Thursday- 3.1 miles  Second all day meeting.  This is the one where I asked the ridiculous question.  I also left this one early as I had a DR’s appointment in another town to get to.   Traffic on the freeway was ridiculous, there and back- I was literally yelling in my car.   By the time I got home I was so over it- I did not want to run.  At all.  I sat around for 30 minutes before forcing myself to change and at least attempt a few miles.  It wasn’t an amazing run but it wasn’t horrible either.  I was glad that I followed through though.

Friday- Rest  I was so stinkin’ tired.  I was having troubles finishing my sentences, I was  very happy to see 6:00.  Bring on the weekend!

Saturday- Rest I wandered around SLO with my mother and did some shopping.  For once I managed to go to the Running Warehouse and Not spend any money.  It’s a miracle!  Can’t say the same for Banana Republic or Dick’s though.  πŸ˜›

Sunday- 10 miles Once again, I got out the door too late.  My stomach wasn’t having it and I didn’t start until 8:00.  Still too late.   In the first 1/4 mile I was distracted by a CHP who I thought was pulling over a car as they came off the highway and I was on the lack of shoulder in the way.  In my haste to get out of the way I ran into a tree branch.  Oops!  1/4 mile later I was passing the cemetery and was glad that I had made plans to meet up with my mom at the end of my run on the other side of town as I could tell they were preparing for a funeral.  I always change my route if I know there will be a service- they don’t need me running by.

The temp wasn’t bad in the beginning but I was riding the struggle bus by mile 5.5.   I welcomed the longer walk break in mile 6 when I walked with my mother for a bit but those last few miles were uncomfortably warm.    I had hoped for a fast finish since I had the aid of a slight downhill but in reality I crawled mile 10.

15.4 miles for the week.  Zero cross training.

This is shaping up to be a very low mileage year and it kind of bugs me.  But obviously not enough as I haven’t made a drastic change yet.  Grrr.  I also don’t see it changing anytime soon as the busyness at work is only ramping up for the month.

Here’s hoping this week is a little more steady.  I already know one of training sessions was postponed so we’ll see how that affects my schedule but I am keeping things very flexible.    But I need to be flexible and steady.

I think I can, I think I can.

How as your week?

Has summer arrived in your area?

Week 24- Heat Wave

It’s begun.

The work week was long and they are only going to get longer from here on out.   I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.  The last big conversion/ merger I went through was 4 years ago and I ended up falling back to running 1x during the week and both weekend days because I was putting in so much overtime.  Oddly enough, that’s also when I was the fastest but I am sure the 2 have no correlation.   πŸ˜›    Difference is, last time we were the company doing the buying not so there wasn’t a huge learning curve for me- it was just a super busy time.  This time, I’m looking at a Grand Canyon of things I don’t know and not knowing what I don’t know makes me uneasy.   I am trying not to stress about it though.

Trying.  I need to read more.  For relaxation I mean.  So I ordered some new books.

Monday- 2.5 miles  First day back at work.  Couple hundred emails, schedule overload,  work ran late, and we were down 50% of our staff.  By the end of the day I had zero desire to run after work.  Zero.  But I changed, laced up and headed for home town.  I turned it into a game- could I keep my heart rate in the green zone?  Yeah, no.  But I tried.  πŸ˜›

Tuesday- Rest I meant to do something productive workout wise but I didn’t.  And something about the shoes I wore to work pissed off my right foot.

Wednesday- Rest  Meeting #1 of meeting/ training polooza of the next month.   The day started abnormally early and by day’s end I was just living in migraine city.  I left my gym bag full of running gear at work and just went home.

Thursday- 4 miles  It had been too long since I ran in work town so that was my plan.  Success!  Similar MO to Monday- try to stay in the green zone.  Hell for the first 2 miles I had trouble getting into the green.    I felt like I was working but I guess the temp in the 60’s and a downhill made things easier than I thought.  Then there was the climb in mile 4 and my heart rate went right past green and into threshold.  Grrrr.     Once home I did 8 minutes with my kettle bell.  Ouch.

Friday- Rest  Seriously 8 minutes with a kettle bell should not kick my ass that much.

Saturday- 9 miles bike  I admit I slept in.  Then it was 106 and there was no way I was running in that.  I stuck to the bike.  Except I still haven’t replaced my fan so I was still ended up a sweaty mess.

Sunday- 7.3 miles  Long run fail.  I headed out around 8 to get in my planned long run of 10 miles but it was already too late.  It was 80 when I started.   It wasn’t bad in the beginning but it never got any better.  I started to feel the warmth around mile 4.  My mother was supposed to meet me around mile 5.5 and she was going to walk while I finished the rest.  She drove past me before I even hit 5.  I took a shorter route to her but I knew I wasn’t hitting 10.  I decided to try for 8 but at 7.3 when I was running- not sure what I was doing could be called running- brought me past the car again, I said F* it.  It was 90 degrees and it wasn’t even 10 yet.  I had somehow gone through 38 oz’s of water in 7 miles and both my packs were empty.   I was done.

13.8 miles run, 9 miles bike, 1 strength workout

Not exactly what I was hoping for this week but also not too shabby for a Slacker like me. Now if I can just drag myself out of bed earlier on the weekends.

How was your week?

What’s your weather like?

Week 22- June?!?

Upcoming Races:

  • Rock N Roll San Diego 13.1-June 4

Wait, it’s June?  And race week?  Someone really needs to slow the clock down.   Or I’ll take a Time Turner, wouldn’t it be nice if those were real?  πŸ˜›

I suffered from vacation brain and just burn out this week.  Everything seemed so much harder than it should have been.  Seriously, I had troubles counting.  That’s not a good thing in my line of work.   I had to count things multiple times.    While I love 4 day work weeks, there is still 5 days worth of work to fit into those 4 days.  Years ago I had a coworker tell me she hated 3 day weekends because she spent all of Monday stressing about the increased workload on Tuesday.   I won’t complain about 3 days off but I am beginning to see her point.

I mentioned in my last post that I may have ordered myself a new Garmin.  It’s here!!  It’s so pretty, now I am just trying to figure out the bells and whistles.

Monday- 2.74 miles  Ugly.  I decide to try the Roga’s again and once again it was a bad idea.  I eventually gave up attempting to run and just walked it back to my house.  It felt a waste of the extra time off work.      I did take the dog out for a short walk later but it was super short and slow.

Tuesday- Rest With work typically being crazy busy and now being down a person ( my coworker had the baby!) I didn’t even try to run.  I thought about riding the bike when I got home but thinking is as far as it got.

Wednesday- Rest  Oh hey, I have a race in 4 days.   I started to do the math and realized that if ran today and Thursday like planned, I would have more miles than previous weeks.   That didn’t seem like the best idea.  Granted my miles have been so low that a taper seems silly but it still didn’t seem smart to suddenly increase them on race week.    Then my brother decided to take the family to dinner so I figured it all worked out, right?

Thursday- 3.22 miles   Ok dinner was a bad idea, it made me sick.  At first I thought it was just my stomach being an asshat but I later found out that my dad was kind of sick too and we ate the same thing.   There was a point I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to run at all.  Yet, I changed and headed for home town.  Once I got there I realized it was 85 degrees and I had somehow forgotten a water bottle.  Lovely.  Then somehow this run kicked ass.   I decided to keep it shorter and slower than planned due to lack of hydration and heat and managed to stick to one of those. πŸ˜›   I ended up running my fastest 5K in the last 6 months.  Still slow as I made sure to take walk breaks every 2 minutes but my legs felt great!   Where did that come from?!

Friday- Rest Total vacation brain, stress ball.  I was trying to get everything done so no one had to worry about anything while I was gone and I was stressing out.  I love vacations but the type A in me hates not being there.

Saturday- Road trip!!  Oh good lord, it took 7 hours to get to San Diego.   Traffic, you suck.  Once we were finally there we headed straight for the Convention Center and the Expo.  Bib pickup and shirt pick up was a cinch then it was into the crowd.  I figured we were so late most people would have already picked up their stuff…nope!  People everywhere!   I was able to meet up with Mai of Once Upon A Run and Chelsea of The Dancing Runner, which was awesome!  Then it was of to Seaport Village for a Bibrave Pro meetup with Mai and Emily of azSunGoddess.

Finally we checked into our hotel- literally across the street from the finish line festival- before heading out for some food.    I tried to go sleep early as I knew I had a really early wake up call but I was realizing that you really could eat too much pizza.  Food and I did not get along this week.  😭

Sunday- Rock n Roll San Diego 13.1  Recap to come.  But for the first time, I took a race shuttle to the start.  Look at me being all runner like.  πŸ˜›

19.2 miles for the week.  I meant to ride the bike but it just never happened.  I wasn’t too busy I just didn’t make it a priority.  Next week.

Speaking of next week, I have the week off!! Woo hoo!  I have so many things I need and should get done but I also kind of want to spend a day or 2 doing nothing.  Which one will win?

How was your week?

Do anything fun this weekend?

What do you do on Stay-cations?

Week 21- Trucking On

Upcoming Races:

  • Rock N Roll San Diego 13.1-June 4

This week was pretty good.  My brain felt fried for part of it but eh, that happens sometimes right?  I ran, I ate yummy food, I read and I tried to sleep.   I had a really bad moment at work one day where I got a little frustrated with a situation but I dug myself out of that mood and moved on.    Not to say it won’t happen again but I got past it for last week.  And my coworker made me laugh hysterically- a customer asks her “so, any big plans for the 3 day weekend”.  Her very calm, almost bored response was “not really, just having a baby’.   I damn near spit out my water.  I’ll miss her sense of humor while she’s on leave. πŸ˜›

Monday- 3.5 Miles  Holy tight calves, batman. Ouch.  I headed to the lake after work to get in a few miles and I was feeling good.  Until I started running that is.  My calves were so tight, I felt like they were going to rip.   I crawled these miles and stopped to stretch about every 1/2 mile.  Nothing seemed to help.  I called it after 3 laps of the lake.  They weren’t loosening up and it wasn’t worth risking an injury for more miles.

Tuesday- Rest  After the day before I was taking time to rest the legs.  I made sure that I foam rolled that evening though.   It was a long day at work with an early morning meeting so my brain was kind of fried so I just vegged that evening.

Wednesday-3.1 miles I had planned for running more in the morning but the weather had turned on me by the evening.  I had packed shorts and a tank which was fine for Monday but today the weather barely hit 60 and the winds were gusting up to 25mph.   Luckily I had an old race shirt in my emergency stash of clothes so I layered that over my tank but my ears were still cold.  I made it to the turn around for 5K before I decided to bail.  I hate cold ears.  Cold ears turn me into a giant baby.  I need to make sure I keep a Buff in my bag for rare days like this.   My legs felt ok, if I could have warmed up my ears I think I would have kept running.

Thursday- 2.5 miles Cold and misty miles.  Seriously, weather just pick one and stick with it!  I was just better this time though- capris, long sleeves and my Buff.   My legs were feeling fussy though so I kept the run short.  I just did 2 laps of the lake before stretching it out.    I figured out part of my problem may have been that my shoes were tied too loose.  I was stretching on the parallel bars and my right shoe popped right off!  Oops.    I was also to meet someone I’ve been following on IG for the last year.  We’ve run a bunch of local races at the same time but I’m slow and she’s fast so we’ve never met in real life.  πŸ™‚

Friday- Rest  It was an open to close kind of day.  I planned on riding the bike when I got home but yeah that didn’t happen.  Slacker.

Saturday- Rest I went to SLO for some shopping with my mother.  I feel like we walked miles.  We didn’t but that’s how I felt.  I may have spent more than I had planned.   Which I had planned to spend zero but that never seems to work, does it?  I meant to ride the bike that evening when I got home but I didn’t.  I also briefly considered trying for my long late that evening but I was exhausted.   That seems to be my current state.  I discovered that Hulu has Eli Stone and that is how I spent my evening.

Sunday- 8 mile run, 5 mile bike  I had planned for 10 miles as my last long run before Rock n Roll Diego.   However I really didn’t want to get out of bed that morning.   I pushed it later then I should have.   The plan was to run 10 miles, have my mother pick me then we were going to lunch.   I left later then planned and it was warmer then I wanted it to be.  As I passed the cemetery, I paused and thanked all those that had served.  There were a lot of flags on the graves.

While the first 5 miles were pretty good, I slammed into a wall in mile 6.  My pulse was jumping and I was too warm.  It was also uphill.  I pretty much walked all of it.   I decided to just run 8 and spend some more time stretching before she met me.  Plus those last 3 miles were slow so they took me longer than planned.  😐   I actually ran more than 8 too, at some point my Garmin paused and it took me a while to figure it out.  Boo.  Later that evening I hopped on the bike just to get some miles in before dinner- the family bbq’ed on Sunday- once again, I really need to find my fan.

17.1 miles run, 5 miles biked.  Another week of 5 workouts.  Can I keep this up?  Maybe get to 6 or 7?  How about adding in some strength workout?  Woah, that’s crazy talk for this Slacker.  We’ll see how it goes.  Especially since this is a race week so I shouldn’t be doing anything too radical during it.  That wouldn’t be very smart of me, right?

Oh an I may have bought a shiny new Garmin.

How was your weekend?

Do anything fun?

Anyone make any impulse purchases?

Rambling On 9

Happy Friday Eve!

Nope, it’s Friday now.  πŸ˜›

I am so looking forward to a 3 day weekend.  I have so many things I need to do.  My car has reached a ridiculous level of dirty again.    And I probably should get in a long run.   Seems like a smart thing to do with a race next week.

So I bought a new sports bra.  Realized it was past time to replace some of mine but the store had very few in my size.  Guess it’s a popular size?  The only color they had was white, kind of boring but whatever.   Then I wore it.  Makes no sense but I felt weird having my straps show.  Purple, coral or flowers and I have no problem but something about the white made me want to cover it up!  That doesn’t even make sense!

My stomach has been an asshat of a different level this week.   I was having a pretty good month- still sick everyday but having a good month- but this week the right side has been hurting abnormally.  Not cool.  I’m pretty good at ignoring pain and it’s nothing too severe but it’s not a normal spot.  Boo.

I’m debating seeing a movie this weekend.   I’m on the fence about the new Pirates movie and can’t decide if it’s worth the expense.  Part of me also wants to go car shopping.   nothing wrong with my car, I’ve just had it for 3 years.  That sounds bad I know but this is car number 10… no 9.  Crap, I’ve lost count.

Random- Did you know that Luffa’s are a vegetable?  I had no idea.  I feel like I know nothing now.    So you shower with a vegetable?  Huh?

What are your plans this weekend?
