And the winner is…

Happy Thursday!  Everyone ready for the 4th and the weekend?

Thank you all for your thoughts on my “Choose my next Race” post.  They were great!  And the winner is-

I was definitely leaning one way but Monday was rougher than I let on in my last post.  I knew that if I chose Pozo I would probably push harder than I should right now.  Between the flat course and fast crowd plus my own desire to beat my last official PR (27:54) I may have had troubles reigning it in like I should.    I’m not saying that I’m still not going to try to push it but now I have some hills to temper my inner (wannabe) speed demon.  Ha!   Plus I have a half marathon next Saturday that I want to try and be as ready for as possible.  Did I mention it’s on my birthday?  33 and 13 miles.

Yesterday, NikeC and I met up at the gym again to workout.   After 3 miles on the treadmill, it was time for the circuit room again.   I feel like I was more consistent this time around.  Well except for the step things, I still can’t remember step aerobics.  🙂  Turns out the 90 I thought NikeC was lifting (pushing?) on the first machine  last week was 110.  I’m so weak!  I had to drop it back to 50.   We weren’t able to complete the whole circuit because once again people had troubles following 1-20.   Come on people!

Then we moved on to the hip abduction things.   I learned that those machines can turn pretty creepy when there is an older, leering man dressed in street clothes using one. Ewww.   Luckily he left fairly quickly.   But I will say that I am glad there are no mirrors in that little area.   Those motions are a little awkward in public.  🙂  After that I goofed around on ab coaster.  They are harder than they look!  Plus kind of fun in a silly way.  NikeC tried one too.   And holy crap, my abs feel sore today!

Can you tell what distance I am running?
Can you tell what distance I am running?

I picked up my race packet tonight on my way home.  It was simple and easy at the gym.  It has the weirdest bunch of food samples in it.  Even a pancake mix.  Also, there was a map of the course and I realized that it’s a bit hillier than I would have liked, dang.  Oh well, it should be fun.  I am looking forward to racing tomorrow.  I am aiming to maintain my recent times around 28:00.  Yes a PR would be awesome, but we’ll see.  🙂

What are your 4th of July plans?

Anyone else racing?

Baby Steps (out of my comfort zone)

Happy Friday!!  Wow, this was a long week.  But let’s catch up.  I stepped out of my comfort zone in very little ways this week, but that still counts right?

First up, Wednesday, I hit the gym after work with NikeC with the intention of doing the circuit room.  I have only done it one other time and that was about 2 years ago.   Machines and I don’t get a long so well.  I did a short 2.5 miles on the treadmill to warm up.   I actually kind of liked the treadmill, either that or I was nervous about the circuit room.   I had hydrated a little too well before hitting the gym that night so before moving to the circuit room I had to use the restroom.  Why is this special?  I had never used the restroom or been in the locker rooms before.  I’ve belonged to the gym for 5 years.  I did mention I was a germophobe right?

After surviving that, we moved onto the circuit room.   Where some people were using it wrong.  Ok, I admit I don’t use it but come on, I can count from 1 to 20.   Once that was straightened out, we got to working out.   #bloggerfail- I don’t remember the names of machines nor did I take pictures.  She went first and demonstrated.  Other than the first machine, I think I did ok.  You sat in the first machine in kind of V shape and the pushed yourself back.  (see- blogger fail)  Also a fail because I couldn’t move it at all- I look over and NikeC had it at 90 lbs, yeah umm no.  She’s a bad ass and I am not.  Backed it down to 40 and I was good.   I also felt really challenged on the stupid steps in between each machine.  Who forgets how to jump?!    I was born in the 80’s, when did I lose my Jazzercise skills!  After the circuit we moved on to the leg room.   Those hip abduction things could be a good thing for running but felt really awkward.   I could do pretty much nothing in the ab room, apparently my butt’s too big for my back to lie flat.  🙂  So that will be a challenge for another night, haha.  Overall, we were there an hour and a half.  Now if I can just make it  a weekly thing.

Since I work Saturday again this week, I had another short day on Thursday.  It was opposite this time, so I worked in the morning and left early.  Knowing this on Wednesday I decided to try to do my long run on Thursday.  Only problem was I didn’t know where.   I thought about running on the beach but was warned away by a text about a bunch of leash less crazy dogs.  (It’s a leash free beach) I am crazy dog bait, so I passed on that.  I headed to nearby park in work town that says it has 2.3 miles of paved trails.   Yeah, I could only find about half a mile.    Any other day I would have just run around and figured it out but I had 12 miles to hit so I wanted a general idea of where I was going.  I headed to the lake to get in some laps, planning for 6 miles before heading back to home town to finish off the second 6.

End of the playground
End of the playground

It was warmer than work town but still mid 80’s so I felt good.   I’ve decided to always walk the playground section of the path.  It gives me a little breather and as an added bonus, I don’t run over any wandering children.  🙂   I have to admit I look forward to that little break, it’s about .10 of a mile, but feels great.    After 3 miles I needed water but I had also over hydrated that day as well.  Was I really going to have to use another restroom?  This one in a public park? Yes…it was only slightly sketchy.  No mirrors and lots of padlocks, classy.7fast

After surviving that I pushed on. It was warm but I felt good, so continued on to 7 miles.  Woo hoo! I stopped to stretch before heading back to my car.  This is where I became an obnoxious runner.  A woman and her daughter were driving by and they stopped near my car.  She asked how far I had walked. I said “run” probably not in the best tone.  I’m sorry!!  Blame it on the heat or the tiredness or something.  And since I do walk the playground now, she could have only seen me walking.  There is nothing wrong with walking.  In fact, I think I am more consistent with scheduled walking breaks.  See example above.   🙂

After driving back home, drinking some Nuun and snacking on some Honey Stinger bites, I headed out to the newer path with my mom.  Again she was going to walk and I was going to run.   Since I had already done 7, all I needed was 5 so I planned on running the same route as Monday.    Same as Monday, I walked most of the first mile with my mom, so I was perfectly fine seeing a 13 minute first mile.  I figured I would pick up the pace, ha!  Never happened.  Maybe it was penance for my earlier snarkiness.    I didn’t schedule any walk breaks but maybe I should have.  Miles 2 and 3 clocked in at 11:00, hey at least I was consistent.  Finally got back down to 10 flat for mile 4 but I also knew 5 wasn’t happening.  I cut out the one cul de sac loop and just headed back to the car.  4.5 miles later and I was done.  Yuck.  I don’t know if it was because the temp had jumped again or if I was just tired.  Either way I was still feeling pretty good for hitting 11.5 miles.   Even if that last missed .5 bugs me a little.   🙂  Apparently my Diet Coke is still spiked.  🙂4.5slow

Today I have yet to hit my measly 10 minutes of exercise but I still have a few hours.  I really should because I ate way too much today.    I was freakin’ starving!   I was a little concerned I would be sore at work today but I was actually pretty good, tall boots and all.   And bonus, I’m heading into the weekend having already completed my long run!   Now I just have work to get through tomorrow and an anniversary party for a friend tomorrow night.  And sleep, I need sleep.   And to maybe read a book.

How was your week?

Anyone racing this weekend?

Am I the only one who has had an #obnoxiousrunner moment?

May Recap = No Excuses Summer

May was a long, kind of rough month that also felt like it passed in the blink of an eye.   But enough whining, lets move on to the numbers-

Races-

Run or Dye–                   ?????
Bands on the Run 10K- 59:28May

May turned out to be my lowest mileage for the year so far.  This was due to a variety of reasons but at this point I calling bullshit and saying that they were all excuses and poor planning on my part.  Which leads into my summer plans-

#noexcusessummer

As of June 1st, I am done whining.  This is going to be really hard so I may need your help.   🙂  What this means is that going forward I will do at least 10 minutes of exercise six days a week.  Doesn’t really sound like anything at all, but considering all I do right now is run and sit on my butt, it’s a step in the right direction.

  • So I will run a minimum of 3 days a week, 4 if I’m feeling feisty.  But I will focus more on quality than hitting a mileage goal.
  • The yoga DVD has made it’s way into the dvd player and will be done once a week, the kettle bell dvd should be done once a week as well.
  • Also on the plan is to start using the gym I pay for but haven’t been to in 3 months. And by use I mean something other than the treadmill 🙂

As for the no excuses, I have made a lot of them lately.  Work was crazy, it was hot, my stomach hurt, I had the paper to work on, etc.   Enough is enough.   Work is going to be crazy until at least the end of the year, so I may as well get over it.  The heat?  As someone pointed out, I live in central California, it’s just a fact of life.  I should be thankful that we don’t have humidity.   I don’t know how anyone runs in that.  My stomach? Well, realistically, it’s never going to work right, I’ve been told that, so why wait in vain for it to be perfect?  As for the paper, it’s done and the class is done.  Not my best work.  😦

There are 24 hours in a day and really I have next to no obligations.   There is nothing stopping me from exercising before or after work other than my Slacker-ness.   While it may be hot in my home town, my work town usually runs about 25º cooler.  Granted, to run more than 4 miles I will have to find roads with actual shoulders but I’m sure it can be done.   And if not, well then there is the nice air conditioned gym.  🙂pupyhike

In keeping with this new attitude, Sunday I completed the yoga dvd and day 1 of the AB challenge that is floating around right now.  After the race on Saturday followed by a 3 mile hike with my mom and the puppy that night, I gave my legs a break from running.  We did the same hike as the Firehouse 5K race, it’s still hard just walking.    But yoga equals exercise so day 1, done!

Monday was a vacation day for me, which was awesome.   I had planned to run 6 miles in the AM and followed by a busy day of errands and helping my mother with her tennis banquet that night.   I woke to find that day 2 was going to be a challenge.  My stomach was horrible and there was no way I was running then.  I did some thinking and knew I had a small window around 1:00 to squeeze in some miles, so I slept a little longer.  By 1:00, my stomach was barely better but I couldn’t quit after a 1 day streak so I went out for a slow run.  I kept it easy and walked every time it got a little worse.   I came to a complete halt at 3.5 miles for a few moments but I pushed though.  4.5 miles completed!    Normally, I would have blown off all exercise for the day.6-2

I was supposed to help my mother hand out the awards during the banquet but the puppy was not doing well with the unusual crowd at the house.  Finally to calm her down, I took her for a walk.  It was supposed to be short, but she had energy to burn and maintained a steady pace for 2.5 miles.  She never does that!  So in a hap hazard way, I hit my mileage goal for the day anyways.  🙂  I only completed half of the ab challenge though, my stomach was in no mood to do sit ups or crunches.

Today was another vacation day, yay!  I met a friend for lunch to celebrate her birthday tomorrow ( Happy birthday ML!).  It was yummy.  My stomach is still not happy so I was planning on taking it easy and doing the yoga dvd in the evening.   Then I ended up helping my mother with tennis practice.    It’s spring practice for fall right now, and she has like 30 girls out there.  She likes when I come help because I am more of a drill sergeant out there.    I lost count of how many times I yelled bend your knees.   Even though that could have counted as my exercise of the day and Tuesdays are a usual running rest day, I couldn’t pass up a vacation day and not run.  So I set out for 4 miles.

I don’t know if it was my stomach or just because I mentally think of Tuesday as a rest day but it was hard.  I ran so slow.  Then I got stuck behind a truck doing an awkward 5 point turn in mile 2 and a phone call in mile 3.  Ok, I get it, not a fast run day, but still got it in.  🙂  So 3 for 3 so far!   Let’s see how far I can go!

It’s back to work for me tomorrow.  😦  Plus I have to get a few miles for National Running Day!   I might check out the gym equipment too.  But seriously? How do you use that stuff?

What are your goals for June?

No really, any gym tips?

Keep Left

My week of self imposed torture is almost done!   I’ve missed running and reading all your posts.   I did manage to read some posts, I tried to hit “like” on what I did read, but  my comments were kind of sparse.  Sorry 😦  Since this week has been so off and all over the place, this post is going to be a little different-

Things I’ve Learned this week-

*Procrastinating is not as cool as you think and working under pressure does not make things more exciting.  And, yes I knew that before but have been forcibly reminded.

*I found something slower than a treadmill mile- and a typo

Ugh
Ugh

*Compression socks are awesome for your circulation on a long drive.  However, if you are wearing said socks under skinny jeans and are stuck in traffic in a poorly ventilated car- watch out!  I was so flippin’ hot and I couldn’t loosen my pant leg enough to get the socks off.   But Pro Compression did retweet me!

*When your GPS app is telling you to keep left, you should keep left!  Instead of making it have to recalculate and circle around.  If the app could talk, I think it would have had some choice things to say.

*No matter how clean the rooms are or how friendly the staff is, care facilities are depressing.  Just straight up sad and I don’t do well with that.  😦

*Why yes, I do eat my feelings.  And it’s usually pizza.

Ok, kind of blurry, sorry.
Ok, kind of blurry, sorry.

*Running into a headwind doesn’t always suck.  For example, when its 90º+ outside.   I still walked a lot but thank you wind.   Was it too hot to run?  Possibly but after 3 days off, I really wanted to run.  Saturday’s original goal was 6 but that wasn’t happening.  3.5 instead. IMG_4560

*Visor’s really do make a difference.   Took a run break from the research today and realized I forgot my visor 1/2 mile in.  I thought I would be ok as it was 10º cooler than yesterday.  So not true.   I was hot and sweaty and sweat was dripping in my eyes.  I don’t think that has ever happened before.   I did an uncomfortable 4 and called it.

Why do my grimaces look smiles?
Why do my grimaces look smiles?

*Finding said visor and dunking it water before taking the puppy out for a puppy jog-awesome!  I was so much cooler.  The puppy also had a really good walk/jog.  She loves to roll in grass.   I think this needs to be our weekend tradition. IMG_4595

I have 2 deadlines, one Monday and one Wednesday, and then freedom!  Haha.   I am sure something else will come up 🙂

How was your weekend?

Anyone race?

Am I the only procrastinator?

Loving this Light

I mentioned in my previous post that this week is inspection time at work.  I thought I was prepared but what I was not prepared for was for him to show at 8:05 on Monday morning.  Seriously?!!?  I hadn’t had my coffee or my soda; I was in a sudden panic that I hadn’t crossed my I’s or dotted my T’s.  Aargh!!!!   By the time the day was done, I was just stressed and cranky.  I needed to run but I knew it wasn’t going to be awesome; my brain was tired.

I may have been stressed but I was so excited to take advantage of the time change!   I changed after work and headed for the lake path that I haven’t been able to run since the time changed last year.    My commute is a narrow two lane highway going through a canyon which is prone to rock slides.  The road has no shoulders, blind corners and is heavily shaded.  Seriously I think my hips are bigger than the “shoulder”.  The speed limit is 55 but most treat that as a suggested minimum.  Imagine my surprise rounding one of the corners to find a man running with traffic wearing black.   Seriously, dude?!   I get that you want to make the most of the extra daylight, but this is not the road for it!

lakeCollageOnce I arrived at the park, the weather was amazing.   I was aiming for 5 miles.  The path is a little over a mile around so I was hoping that 4 laps would be 5 miles.  That would be perfect, right?  Not so lucky.  Lap 1 came in at 1.18.     Lap 1 included my warm up but I could tell I was sluggish.  I was ok with that because I just wanted to run.    I was also a little sore from Saturday’s long run, wearing new boots all day hadn’t helped either.

Miles 2 and 3 were a little rougher than I would have liked; this trail is flat after all.   I feel like it was just after mile 3 that I settled in.  Mile 4 felt good and 5 was better.   Since I was on the backside of the lake when I hit 5 I kept running until 5.5.  I figured that still gave me a quarter mile to cool down before hitting the exercise equipment that I use to stretch.   I didn’t have any real goals with this run, just to enjoy the weather and the path and run off some stress.  Mission accomplished!

IMG_3383The lake was not as low as I thought it would be.   We still desperately need rain but the ducks and geese had some water.  There were plenty of people taking advantage of the weather as well.   I saw other runners, walkers and plenty of dogs.   Some were running solo, some with friends.    Everyone was friendly too.   I had a conversation going with a guy as we passed each other on laps.  He was out walking and saw me pause to take pictures.  I told him I needed a little break.   😛     I also loved that there were 3 guys who looked like they had just come a jam session with their garage band doing laps.

A little traffic on the way out.
A little traffic on the way out.

Today, I had to remind myself that rest days count as training too.    The weather was awesome again.  The inspection is still going on and I am discovering the meaning of stress sweat (TMI?).   I have been through so many of these before but this one just seems intense.    Leaving work I had to go return the previously mentioned new boots.  They ripped yesterday, classy right?    Then driving home, I passed no less than 9 people out running.   Against traffic on wide roads, yay!  I was so jealous.   But rest is good, plus I had classwork to do.  😦    Besides tomorrow is another inspection day, more stress to run off!!!

Moving along
Moving along

I am thankful that the extra daylight brings the lake back into play.    It is outside and flat, both dirt and paved.   More fun than a treadmill but better for my ankle than all hills.   It also brings me back to be being a 3 town runner.  I don’t know why, but the fact that I can run in 3 towns on a weekly basis just makes me smile.  🙂

I am 11 days out from the Wine Country Half and we are officially 46 days away from SLO Marathon.  I am so excited for both but I am getting nervous.    I still have a discount code for the SLO Marathon– anyone want to come run with me? Or faster than me?  🙂   Check out the amazing town and people too!  Check out this bling for SLO Marathon

Sweet!!!
Sweet!!!

Who is ready for hump day?

Anyone taken advantage of daylight savings yet?
