San Francisco Marathon Training Week 12

Seriously, that’s a long title.   Oof.

How is it week 12 already?  My little countdown app is telling me I only have 41 days to go.   Holy crap!

I admit I struggled hard with motivation this week.     Everything seemed hard.  I thought my boss coming back from vacation would make things easier but I just felt fried.  At one point on Friday, I had so many pots in the fire I couldn’t even tell which way was up.   I was just waiting for one of them to blow up in my face.  Which may still happen this week, who knows.   All week long, I kind of just wanted to curl up in the corner and hide under a blanket.

This spilled into running.  I had serious trouble getting myself to run on Monday and then Wednesday turned into a rest day too.  Convinced myself that my shins needed more time anyways.   Week 12 is not the time to be getting lazy but I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later.


Monday- 3.5 miles  My legs were feeling rough for this run.   I haven’t run a Monday since I first hurt my shins.   Taking the day off after my long run seemed to help but I knew I couldn’t run on Tuesday this week.   I headed to the lake path and planned to take it nice and easy.    Even slow running with walking intervals was rough.  My shins protested.  I called it when lap 3 put me back at my car.  3.5 miles was not a great way to start the week.

Tuesday- Rest  A mandatory conference call had been scheduled for after normal work hours.  This was why I had to move my run up to Monday.

Wednesday- Rest  I had planned on running, even took my stuff to work.  I tell myself I took the day off because my shins hurt.  While that is partially accurate, I didn’t even take my gym bag out of the car in the morning.  So yeah, I enjoyed pizza night instead.

Thursday- 7 miles  Work was tiring and the last thing I wanted to do was run.  I told myself to suck it up and change.  I left work town and headed for the river path.   Of course, right as I parked I suddenly felt like I needed to use the restroom.  Of course- most of my routes have no bathrooms or water fountains.  Whatever, I figured that would be a reason to keep the run short.   I started out up the hill and just stuck to the run/ walk intervals.  My legs were feeling ok so when I hit the turn around point I decided to go a little further.  I made a left and headed up a street.   I remember the street from my very first 10K years ago but I remembered it wrong.  I thought it was flat but it was hillier than I recalled.  Little rollers but they still felt like mountains.  But it’s cool- I made some new friends-


On the way back, the wind had turned insane.   It was pushing me backwards it was so strong, I felt like I was running in quicksand.   That said, my running intervals were the fastest they’ve been since I got hurt so this run ended up being more like speed work.

Friday- Rest  Work was insane.   Straight up crazy.  By the time I got off I was running out the door.  But I didn’t have to close so yay!

Saturday- 9 miles  The plan called for a 10 mile long run and 8 mile easy this weekend.  I knew Sunday was going to be busy with family stuff so I was doubtful of getting a run in.   With only a 10 mile long run planned, I got a little cocky- I mean what’s 10 miles?  Stupid.  I didn’t start my run until 8:30.  Stupid.   By mile 2 it was warm.  NikeC was out for her run too and we started texted each other about how warm it was.  I kept a comfortable pace until I hit the bridge.  Even though I know it’s stupid, I still fly across the thing and then up past Walmart.  Miles 4-5 saw a 9:14 and 9:44.  Oops.  So not long run pace for a person with wonky shins.   I walked more of mile 6 than planned but still the pace was decent.  Mile 7 saw a break- NikeC!  Our routes crossed paths and I finally got to meet the cutest little guy ever.


We stopped and chatted for a bit before going on to finish our runs.   Our chat meant I wasn’t going to be able to finish 10 but it was worth it.   I was planning on ending my run at the high school and getting a ride from my mother.  She’s having summer practices right now- and bonus- the school has water fountains and sometimes the bathrooms are open.   Thing is her practice ended at 10:30.    I picked up the pace and managed to get there right at 10:30.  Those last 3 miles were most I’ve run without walk breaks in a month.  Sweet!


4.5 miles walk–  Knowing that Sunday was iffy, I had a second run of the day in the back of my mind.  I headed out around 3 for some more miles.   I wanted to run it like last week’s double but the week caught up with me so I walked it.  I’m still counting it because let’s be real here- there will be walking in this marathon.   I may as well get used to doing it on tired legs now instead of race day.

Sunday- rest  Happy Father’s Day!  I knew my mother and I had plans in SLO and then family dinner in the evening.  I could have run in the morning but I was just so tired, I chose sleep instead.    I still managed to get in 10,000 steps without running so that’s not too lazy.  I also came home with some pretties-


So, 24 miles for the week.  Could have been better, could have been worse.   My shins were overly fussy in the beginning of the week but they calmed down by the end.   I have big plans for this week so I am hoping they will continue to behave.   Fingers crossed!!  I also hope the motivation bus comes by again, I fear I will get sucked into the black hole that is binge watching Lost again and put off running.  Oh and I have some awesome news share this week!

Week 20 Training Recap

Week 20 for real??!? Where has the year gone?

And the marathon training keeps rolling. I am already tired.  Or still tired from an emotional April.  Who knows anymore.  My focus this week was to up my running from 4 days to 5.  My big goal for May is to consistently run 5 days a week.  My training plan actually calls for 6 days of running but one of the first changes I made was dropping Friday’s run.  If I handle May well, I may consider adding in Friday miles but I am not going to worry about that now.


Monday- 4 easy miles.  After an unplanned Sunday rest day, I was really hoping that these “easy” miles would feel easy.  Yeah, not so much.  My legs felt tired.  Part of it may be mental- I was a die-hard believer in never running on Mondays.    It’s only been a month-ish since I started running on Monday’s and I think I still mentally rebel sometimes.  #rebelwithoutaclue    Post-run, things snowballed quickly and the next 6sih hours were spent waiting in the ER.


Tuesday- 6.98 miles- 1.25 mile w/u, 8 x 600’s, 1 mile c/d.  Dude.   This was the first time using the workout feature on my Garmin; it worked pretty well.  With Monday night being so long and not getting to bed until 2 something, I told myself 2 things going into this run.  1-walk the recoveries and 2- listen to your body.   I knew I was overly tired and under fueled.   I didn’t want to just bail on the workout though.  I decided to try the warm up and 2 600’s with recoveries and see how I felt.  If I needed to drop the intervals and do easy miles, I would.  I was hoping that making the recoveries a walk would be enough to get me through it.   My plan calls for 600m repeats to be done between 3:26-3:35 but never having done 600m before, I had no idea what to expect.   I just tried to run by feel and be consistent.  The drawback to the workout feature is that it showed my current pace, I’d knew what overall time I had to hit but had never translated that to pace. Oops.   Actual repeat times– 3:17, 3:22, 3:15, 3:23, 3:20, 3:19,3:16, 3:21.  Holy crap, I did it!!  I felt pretty good when I was done but was tired so I skipped my last recovery and went straight to the cool down.   I might not have done that had I realized the watch would just stop at 6.98 miles!!!!  Grrr.

Wednesday- Rest day Pizza day- nuff said.  😜


Thursday- 7.25 miles- 1.25 mile w/u, 5 tempo miles, 1 mile c/d.   Oof, that was rough.   Nothing about this run ever felt good.  I ran this tempo on the streets and I looked forward to every stop light.    Built in breaks without having to feel guilty?  Hell yeah!    Outside of those, I never walked or took a break, so that is huge in itself.     I was glad to hit the cool down portion and even happier when that was done. I was so happy for cool down that it was almost faster than the tempo miles.  Oops.   A run-in with an off leash dog turned it into a walk and lowered the pace, which was probably better anyways.   😒  Tempo goal- 10:18.  Tempo miles- 10:03, 9:58, 10:04, 10:10, 10:07.  Pace wise, I did what I was supposed to do but it was just ugly.   It was also my first run with my Fitbit and one point it said my heart rate was 182.  What?!  I know that most runs will feel tired but this one just had me worried for the longer tempo runs that I know are coming all too soon.

Friday- Rest day.   Aww, bliss.  I indulged in some very yummy tri-tip, garlic bread and garlic green beans.  It was amazing.


Saturday- 8 miles   Misery.  I am intentionally keeping one of my weekend runs in the mid-late afternoon.    I need to work on building my heat tolerance back up.  I know that’s one of the things that hurt me at SLO- it was a very warm morning.    Saturday was only 76 but it kicked my ass.  I took more than a few walk breaks, a couple of stops and ran out of water.   Well hell, that’s not a good sign.    We’re not too far from constant triple digits here!   Oh well, I got in some hills.    To add to the pain, I realized that my training plan only called for 6 miles.   😓😂

Sunday- 10 miles  I got up early in an effort to beat the very high heat of 81.  Yes, that was sarcasm.  😏     This was rough, my pace was all over the place.  Some 10’s, some 11’s and some 12 minute miles.   It was warmer than I would have liked but like I said I have to get used to it.  I had more water than the day before but I dropped my bottle around mile 4 and broke the lid.  Seriously??  I had enough left to get me through the run but I had to carry the bottle in a certain way so I didn’t spill the rest.   I also knew that week’s mileage was catching up with me so I was fine with going slower.   When all was said and done, I was still closer to long run place than I thought I would be.

Weekly miles- 36.2 miles

It was a long, hard week but I completed every workout I set out to do.  I felt like throwing a little party when I finished my long run.   This was my highest mileage week ever– hell yeah!  Right now I feel ok, but I know I need to keep on foam rolling and stretching.    Moving on to this week, my mileage stays relatively the same but my intervals shift to 6x 800’s.  Yikes!!   I have a doctor’s appointment on Monday that could mess with my easy run though.  I thought about moving it to the morning but if I am still struggling with 8 AM runs, 4 AM is not going to happen.  😜  I really don’t want to miss my run so we will see.  I know consistency is going to be key to getting through this training cycle.   And a good dose of good luck.

I feel like there is something else I wanted to share but I can’t remember what it was.  Oops!

Week 13 Training Recap

Upcoming Races– Firehouse 5K
SLO Marathon 13.1

Focus– I forgot to pick one- oops

Week 12 was pretty good so of course this week started off rocky.  One of these days the pendulum won’t swing back and forth so quickly.   The whole week was wonky actually.  It started odd, swung into worse and then swung back again.

Monday- Rest  I had planned on riding the bike but as I was leaving work I started getting texts from my brother.  He wanted to know where my dad was.  Odd but ok, so I called my dad.  No answer.  Hmm.  I called my mom, no answer.    That’s odd.  Now my mind goes to worst case scenarios and starts thinking that something happened.    Turns out my brother’s truck had broken down in the Subway parking lot.  As for my parents not answering- well, they have lives.   😛 But eventually, I picked up my mom and we ended up eating Subway for dinner while waiting for AAA to tow my brother’s truck.  

Tuesday- 3.5  miles– With my brother’s truck out of commission, he needed a ride to work.    His current job has him working in SLO.  Not in the town I work or the town we live in.  Well that makes the commuting a little tricky.    It’s sad how much getting up 30 minutes earlier kicked my butt.  I had running gear packed but wasn’t optimistic about getting in a run.  It ended up working out, I only had to take my brother halfway and he found another ride home.

I headed to the lake path to get in a few laps.  Ouch, Ouch, ouch.    My calves and shins were soooo tight.    I hoped they would loosen up after the first lap but no such luck.    I stopped multiple times to stretch during lap 2 but it didn’t help.   Lap 3 probably shouldn’t have happened but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t being a big baby.   It still hurt, so I called it at 3.5 miles.

  
Wednesday- Rest-Another earlier than normal morning and time I did take my brother all the way to SLO.    That led me on a roundabout way to work but bonus- I found a new road to run on!!   You know you’re a runner when you drive new roads and notice how run-able the shoulders are.  I mapped it and I can run from my work location to another one and it’s around 14.5 miles.  Woo hoo!   Just have to figure out how to get back. 😛

  
Thursday- 7.5 miles–  As I mentioned in Friday’s post, this run sucked.   Pain, tightness, clothing issues, asthma issues, body insecurities; you name it, I had it and the run blew.  I was hoping to pull off 12 but called it at 7.5.    My brother took the family to pizza to thank us for the week.  🍕 Then I came home and vented about the run on the blog.   I also had the beginnings of a headache so I went to bed early with an ice pack on my head.

Friday- Rest–  Like all Fridays. 😀My headache had turned into a migraine.   I tried drinking tons of water, caffeine, food, sugar, etc to help it but nothing worked.   I even took 2 Excedrin Tension Headache pills.   That was probably a mistake.  I tend to have odd reactions to OTC medicines.  Yeah, my pupils decided they wanted to be different sizes.  I ended up going home an hour early.

Saturday- Rest– I worked in the morning and it was chaos.  That seems to be the new theme for the Saturdays I work.  Can it stop?  Part of me wanted to run in the afternoon but I was considering another long run attempt on Sunday.  I don’t usually follow the 10% rule but since 2 weeks ago saw 4.5 miles and last week 17, I decided to be smart.

Sunday -10 miles run, 3 mile walk–  Holy crap people!!!!   After the crappiness of this week’s runs I was not optimistic for this attempt.    When my alarm went off and I saw 88% humidity for the weather, I hit snooze.   I thought about blowing it off entirely, but an hour later I was heading out the door.   I had zero goals for this run, I turned my watch face to the clock and then ignored it.   My mother, brother and I were doing lunch so she was picking me up at the end.  Erring on the side of caution, I told her to give me 2 hours.

I didn’t worry about keeping my pace slow, I didn’t worry about being fast.  I ran what felt comfortable and walked when I needed to.   Per usual, I picked up my pace running across the bridge, it was the only time I really felt fatigued.   I kept running and was soon off road on the river path.  Which turned into a running hopping dance.   The path was full of stink bugs!  Half a mile of watching my feet and hopping over them when needed- that added some excitement to the morning.     Then it was up the hill for the river route and back down.   The humidity never broke and it was still around 78% at the end of my run.   I felt like a sticky, nasty mess but my lungs held up pretty well.     I finished down on the river trail again and stretched out.

Then I saw my watch- 10 miles at 10:27 average pace?  Where the hell did that come from?   I didn’t think I had seen that pace for a long run since last year’s training for SLO.    Hours later and I am still not sure how I pulled that off.  And I had time to stretch and walk it out before I met my mother.

  
When I uploaded my figures into Smash Run later, I realized just rare this run was.  I thought it had been the fastest in a year, umm, it was my fastest 10 miler since January 2014.  What?!?!  I’m still not sure how it happened but I will take it!

  
My mile splits make me laugh- typical me, all over the place.  But I felt good so I’m just going to call it a win.

This week was all over the place- work, life and running included.  I feel like I need another day to recover. Boo.   Oh well, moving on.     My hope this week is to stay consistent and pull off a new to me distance this weekend.  Fingers crossed!!!!

Low-carb–  umm, yeah, I had Subway 4 times this week.   It just kept happening!   It was easy and not horrible for you.  Ugh, well, Monday is a new week right?

Training Week 9 Recap

Upcoming Races- Wine Country 13.1?
SLO Marathon 13.1

Focus– Just like last week- Just keep running, just keep running.

This week felt insane but I am not sure why.  Work was a little crazy, trying to get all the month end stuff done, giving reviews, etc but I’ve had worse.  It just seemed to take a lot out of me this week.  I swear I had trouble finishing sentences.    I feel like I need a vacation but I’ve booked most of my vacation time this year around races.    So yay but boo at the same time?

Monday- Rest  For some reason, I can’t remember much about Monday.   I even just checked my food log to see if there was something exciting.  Nope.  

Tuesday- 3.5 miles  The original plan was to work a half day as I work on Saturday.   However, one of the employees was feeling poorly so they went home and I stayed.   Luckily my gym bag is double prepared so I had clothes to run in work town after getting off.  While the marine layer stayed back, a definite haze had rolled in.  My lungs did not appreciate it at all.  I tried to keep the pace super easy but I was still wheezing by the end.   But I was able to enjoy that sunset so score!    I also had an irrational moment of tsunami panic but I got over it.    We’d had an earthquake earlier in the day, the tide was farther out than I had ever seen it and not a single bird or sea lion was making a peep of noise.   Like I said, irrational moment. 

 Wednesday- Rest day.  Pizza day- woot woot!

Thursday- 5.5 mile “run”/ 7 mile stationary bike  Miserable, straight up miserable.   I took my rescheduled half day and I was hoping to get in my long run so I could just focus on a short run over the weekend.  I like to move things around when I work on Saturday.  I changed at work and drove back to home town.  I had an 11 mile route mapped out and was looking forward to running.    But it sucked from the get go.  I couldn’t seem to get started and when I did, all I did was wheeze.    I couldn’t keep any sort of pace.   2 miles in I switched to run/walk intervals.  Except I couldn’t even maintain a run for 4:30.  So another mile in, I changed it a 3:00 run.  Nope, still couldn’t do it.  

I couldn’t decide if I should call it or just keep pushing and stop being a baby.  Where is the line between pushing and giving up?   I told myself to just get to the next big corner and I could take a seat on the bench there and figure things out.  Except there was no bench when I got there.   It was too much, I plopped my ass in grass on the corner and damn near cried.   I was done.  I sat there for 15 minutes before finally mustering up the will power to shuffle- run the mile+ back to my car.  I couldn’t even maintain a run going downhill.  My feet hurt, my knees hurt, I couldn’t breathe, my legs were rubbing together uncomfortably and my shorts were riding up.  I was 1/2 mile-ish shy of my car when I hit 5.5 and that was it.  I turned off my Garmin and stood there for a bit.  Then I took off my shoes and jogged the remainder in my socks because why not?    I was hot (it was 80), tired and cranky.  This was one of those runs that made wonder what I was even doing.    I went home, and jumped on the bike for some miles to try and ride out the cranky-ness.

Friday- Rest  Glorious.  I was still frustrated after the previous day.

Saturday- Rest   I think this was second most chaotic Saturday that I have worked.  I was literally turning people away because I could not help them, we were so busy.   I considered attempting my long run again in the afternoon but passed instead.  I ran my errands, ate dinner with the family and then took my mom to the movies.   We were leaning towards seeing Race but I was also trying not to think about running.    We saw Deadpool.  And it shows my demented sense of humor that I thought it awesome and hilarious.  I can’t remember the last time I laughed like that at a movie.

Sunday- 10 miles  Long run attempt 2.    The plan was to head out in the morning and meet up with my mother around mile 6.   That way if it sucked again I had a large walk break to look forward to.  I had also stashed my Brooks in her car so I could change into them if the Nike’s were giving me grief.   I slept a little longer than planned so I was rushing to get out the door.  I considered putting it off until the afternoon but the more I thought about the long run, the more it stressed me out.   I also realized I probably wasn’t going to pull off 6 before I met up with my mother. 

 I took a slightly longer walk warm up and then just tried to run easy.  I turned off the run/walk intervals and changed the Garmin screen to just the clock.   I took walk breaks when I felt like I needed them and just kept going.    I cut the first part of the run to 5.5 miles so I could make sure I was at the meeting point in time.  I also lost 5 minutes at 3 stoplights.   The only split I really saw was right after I ran the bridge- 9:15.  Typical, I hate running the bridge and tend speed up when I run it.

  
I wasn’t feeling horrible but it wasn’t all sunshine and daisies so the 1/2 mile walk break with my mom was kind of awesome.   Then I picked up the pace to finish my run before meeting my mother back at her car for lunch.   I just kept trying to run easy and walked when I needed to.  And I tried to not think about the fact that I was now running the same route where I have had 2 blow ups on long runs in the past month.  I finished down on the river path and was glad to be done.  I was glad I had followed through and made myself get out of bed for my run.    And it didn’t suck!!  It did not feel easy but I stayed calm and watched my breathing and just kept running.   7 out of the 10 miles were all in the 10 min range which for me is very consistent.  Yes, I consider all 60 seconds in that range to be consistent.   Long run success!

Low carb– I would say I was around 65/35%.  Not too bad.   I did feel better for most of the week, so I need to keep on cutting back on the carbs.    Cookies got the best of me last week.  Oops.

This week was a little all over the place.   Work was crazy and I think I went a little crazy as well.   Hopefully I can keep my head on straight this week.   Fingers crossed!!!

Week 5/ January Recap

Upcoming races- Surf City 13.1

Focus–  I forgot to choose one this week. Oops.

How is it February?  Seriously, how did that happen?  Wasn’t is just Christmas?  Or I don’t know summer?  Anyways moving on.   One plus about El Nino is that things have been warmer than usual but that changed this week.   Brrrr.

Monday- Rest  Mondays really work as rest days for me.  Why do I keep trying to change that?   I will say that I felt guilty for not getting in some miles on the bike though.

  

Tuesday- 4 miles  Some very, very slow miles.  I had an episode of Z Nation to get me through it.  Though I do wonder if anyone can see my phone, between Z Nation and Blacklist, I feel kind of weird watching my phone at the gym.

Wednesday- 6 miles Stationary   I woke feeling more sore from 4 treadmill miles than I had from my long run on Saturday.   Grrr.   Daylight savings, are you here yet?    I ended up testing out the new Little Caesar’s on the way home so it almost ended up another rest day.  But instead it was just a very late start and fewer miles.

Thursday- 10 miles  I had to work this weekend so I was able to take a half day and I actually made it out of work by 1.    With a storm predicted for the weekend I had planned on trying to get my long run in early.  After last week’s successful though slow 12 milers, I was looking forward to it.    I almost quit in the first 2 miles.  Everything felt off, I was still sore, I felt uncomfortable in shorts, my throat had an alligator instead of a frog in it.  Every time I started to run I felt like I was going to hyperventilate.  What the hell?!  Was I embarrassed to be seen in shorts or something?

  
I got to the top of the hill and just stopped.   I stretched, had a conversation with myself and scrolled Instagram.   Anything to get my mind off of my panic issue.  I didn’t feel like anything was actually really wrong and I didn’t want to miss the chance to complete my long run so I reassessed.  Pace meant nothing so I turned on the run/ walk interval on my watch and set off again.  Slowly.   At mile 5 I assessed again, felt ok so I continued on.  Between walking and running my pace was holding around 11:30.  Since I was moving slower than planned I ended up having to run through the traffic when the high school let out.  Cuz I wasn’t feeling fluffy enough?!

  
When the run was finally done, I joked on Instagram that it was my slowest 10 miler ever.  Except it turns out it wasn’t a joke- it really was my slowest 10 miles ever.  It took me 2 hours to run 10 miles plus another 20 minutes of stopping for head games and a chafing concern.   But you know what?  I ran 10 miles.  Trying to think on the shiny side here. ☺

Friday- Rest Woo hoo!!!

Saturday- 11 miles Stationary   It was cold and the storm was looming when I got home after work.  I had planned on getting in a run after I finished my errands but just couldn’t bring myself to go back out.   Cross training and the comfy chair won.

Sunday- 4 miles  The storm was predicted to clear by the afternoon so I was going to run then.  While the rain did clear, it was freakin’ cold!  I still feel oddly achy and sore, so I kept it slow and easy for 4 miles.

  
And that wraps up my last full week before Surf City.  Since I am treating it like a very large, friendly long run I normally wouldn’t taper.  But the treadmill and I need to break up and this soreness needs to go away so this may be a heavy cross training week.  We’ll see.   And that brings us to the end of January-

   

Double what December was and that was with 6 days off due to the flu.  I am calling this a good base building month.  I will probably continue to build into February.   I’m currently trying to mash 2 training plans together.  Excel is giving me a headache trying to merge the 2 books.  Ugh.   I get the feeling I may just have to start over.
