Week 5- Training Begins??

Training for:

  • Livermore 13.1 -March 26
  • Destination Races Santa Barbara 13.1- May 13

Or does it?Β Β Β Β  I was looking forward to putting my money where my mouth is as it were and hitting the marks during week 1 of training.Β Β  Or at least trying to.Β Β  I knew the miles were going to be hard and I knew I had a busy week but I was looking forward to the challenge.

Monday- 3.1 milesΒ Β  Baby tempo!Β Β  You can read all about that enlightening run here.Β Β  I’m still debating where to run my tempo miles.Β Β Β  I’ll figure something out.

Tuesday- Planned rest dayΒ  My legs were a little tight after the attempt at speed the previous day.Β Β  I wore compression socks under my slacks most of the day and made sure to foam roll.

And here’s when things went south-

Wednesday- Intervals– restΒ  I woke up with a headache and stomach pain.Β  I held fast that I was going to run after work.Β Β Β  Except that I didn’t make it through the day at work.Β  It got to the point that I couldn’t even stand up straight my stomach hurt so bad.Β Β Β  Joy.

Thursday/ Friday- RestΒ Β  What I didn’t mention was that startingΒ  Tuesday night I woke up every night sweating ridiculously.Β  TMI?Β  Sorry.Β Β Β  Maybe I was fighting something?Β  My brother had been sick, my boss missed a day being sick.Β  Whatever it was, my migraine wouldn’t quit and I felt weird.Β  I also had a doctor’s appointment where he ordered a series of fun tests.Β  Yay.

Saturday- Planned rest.Β Β  We were going out of town for my grandmother’s memorial.Β  I knew I wasn’t running that day.Β Β Β  It was a sad, nostalgic, interesting morning and a long day.

Sunday- 8 miles.Β Β  I didn’t want to run.Β  I still wasn’t feeling great but I also wondered how much of that was real and how much was just lingering inertia of the week.Β Β  I slept in in the morning and headed out a little before 3.Β  Yes, I was running during the Super Bowl.Β Β  πŸ˜›Β Β Β Β  I was bartering with myself in miles 1 and 2, the week was already a wash so I could call it at 4 right?Β  I even slowed down in mile 3 which has a downhill and is usually a little faster.Β  Grrr.Β Β  But I kept running and something changed around mile 3.5.Β Β Β Β Β  I just kept going, mile 4, across the bridge- where I pulled a sub 10 mile.Β  This is only interesting because I average around 11:30ish until I hit the bridge and bring the pace down over the next .3 mile.Β Β  I swear I wasn’t sprinting.Β Β  Mile 5- still going and feeling pretty good.Β  Mile 6 and I ran an entire hill that I have never run all of before.Β Β Β  I celebrated on IG and my mother laughed at me.Β  Ok, so the hill less than 1/2 mile and only gained 92 feet but let me have my tiny victory!!!Β Β  Onto mile 7 and mile 8 and I still felt good!Β  Woo hoo!!Β Β  I have no idea what happened but I’ll take it!

11.1 miles for the week.Β  1 half completed workout, 1 fully completed workout.Β  1 missed run and 2 missed cross trainings.Β Β Β  I’m still on the long run high though so yay!Β  But I am thankful that this is a longer training plan now.Β  If it was the standard 12 weeks, I may be a little nervous but the longer plan is keeping me a little calmer.Β  It may be a false sense of security but only time will tell.

How was your week?

Did you watch the Super Bowl?Β  Puppy Bowl?

Week 51/ Vacation Week 2

And just like 16 days have passed.  For the first time, I feel like I need more time.  Mostly because I feel like I accomplished next to nothing.  Unless there are awards given for the number of Hallmark movies watched.   πŸ˜›

In fact, since I was still sick most of this week, let’s bullet-ize this recap for expediency.  Is that a word? Bullet-ize?  Oh well, I’m using it anyways.

  • I slept… a lot.
  • Watched all the Hallmark Christmas movies…and Lifetime ones too.
  • I coughed a lot.
  • Finished all 11 seasons of Bones.  Ok, I did start this in the summer but still.
  • Watched all second season of Fuller House.
  • Still not a huge fan of food, well, sometimes I am and sometimes I’m not.
  • Rode the stationary bike once for a slow 6.5 miles.
  • Watched Battleship for the 100th time.  It’s my stress movie. More on that below.
  • Had my office Christmas party on Friday evening.  Filet Mignon, yum.
  • I managed a little bit of yoga to try and loosen up.  Ha!
  • Saw Rogue One on Thursday!!!!!!
  • I had an MRI on Friday and I freaked the frak out.   Like full on panic attack freak out.
  • Went for one really short run on Saturday.  Man that was hard! My legs were so confused.
  • Finished most of my Christmas shopping on Sunday.  I think.  I feel like I bought nothing.  😒

So, yeah, a stellar week of vacation.    This didn’t serve to improve my opinion of vacations any.   Waking on Tuesday to the news that the company I work for is being sold was also not something I was expecting.   My boss texted me but even knowing, seeing the headline was not something I was prepared for.  The next few months will be interesting.    I’m going to put a smile on my face and do my best to be positive.  Fingers crossed.

2.5 miles was all I ran this week but that’s 2.5 miles more than last week.    That said, I can see I’m not going to be running any double digit long runs any time soon.   Which means Carlsbad in January might not be the best idea.  Boo.  Good thing I haven’t registered for it yet!  I’m not closing the door on it yet, but I think the smart thing would be to not run it.

How was your week?

Do you have a go to stress movie or show?

Am I the only one behind for Christmas?

Week 50/ Vacation Week 1 Recap

Otherwise known as Disneyland fail, the flu and a DNS.  πŸ˜›

I had so many plans for this first week of vacation.  They were good ones too!  Since when do I have plans?  It was kind of exciting.    So how did those plans go?  Ha ha!

I came down with the flu.  I spent Friday through Sunday alternating between my bed or my comfy chair.   I stopped eating on Wednesday.  I know I talk about wanting to lose weight but not like this, this was miserable.  My back hurt from coughing so much, stomach muscles I forgot about were aching in protest.    I’ve slept too much and yet not enough.    But let’s backtrack to the one fun day of the week.

With my mother’s birthday and Christmas both being in December, I thought it would a great gift and a fun way to spend a few days if we went to Disneyland.  The plan was to drive down on Tuesday, check into the hotel, hit the main park all day Wednesday and then California Adventure on Thursday.  Neither of us had ever been to California Adventure before.

After some nightmare traffic in La, we arrived at our hotel like planned.  I had a tickle in my throat but I was trying to ignore it.   I was hoping a good night’s sleep would make things all better.    My throats didn’t hurt and I felt super tired in the morning but I always wake up a little rough so I put my game face on and we were at Disneyland before it opened.  Yay!

I’ve always wanted to see Disneyland at Christmas and while it was just as awesome as I had hoped, I hadn’t anticipated how crowded it would be.    Ouch.  As crowded as it was, the wait times for the rides weren’t too bad.  We were able to ride every ride we wanted to except for Indiana Jones as it was having technical difficulties throughout the day.   Boo.   I rode a couple of rides for the first time- Autotopia, It’s a Small World, Storybook Canal.  I think I have the name wrong on that last one.

The problem was is that I was losing serious steam throughout the day.  I thought I was doing a decent job of hiding it until my mom pointed out that I was walking hunched over.  Oh, oops.   I had some troubles in the Pirates of the Caribbean line and leaned against whatever I could.   Luckily Pirates is a longer, low key ride and one of my favorites, so it was a good way to get off my feet for a bit.

We were having fun but I was fading fast.    We hoped food would help, but instead I could barely finish it.   Then Space Mountain made me a little green.    Once drenched by Space Mountain, we decided to find a spot to watch the parade from.     The parade was great but oh so cold.    We wandered through a few shops before deciding that we were both cold and tired and heading back to the hotel.   So instead of staying at the park until late in the evening, we were back in the hotel by 6.  😒

The next day I was worse.  So bad we checked out and headed home instead.   I was so ill that I gave my mom the keys so she could drive while I hung my head out the window like a dog.   The proximity to me and an open car window did my mom no favors and instead of a second fun day, I got her sick.  #birthdayfail   We made it home by early afternoon where I showered and then crawled into bed.

And I’ve barely moved since.   I’ve put off errands and Christmas shopping.  I was supposed to run with Ashley on Saturday.   Wah!  And Sunday?  Sunday was supposed to be my last race of 2016.   A 5 mile trail race out at Montana de Oro.    But considering walking to the bathroom tires me out, I probably shouldn’t be running up a mountain.   Wah.   I love this race.

At the rate I am going, I have no idea when I am going to run.   I may end up binging on too many Christmas movies.   One day I’ll be hungry again.  I did manage to drag myself to the DMV though-

How was your week?

Ever go to Disneyland during the holidays?

How long does the flu knock you out?

Week 49 Recap- Double Digits!

Ok, for the week but we’re getting somewhere right??  πŸ™‚

Last week was weird and long and rough and short -all wrapped up into 7 days.   My boss said it best- when you wake up Monday thinking it’s Friday, you know it’s going to be a long week.  While I wasn’t quite that bad, I was pretty close.    Part of my issue was vacation brain.  I was trying to get everything done that I had to do before I left.  I wanted to try and leave nothing behind when I left for 2 weeks.  It didn’t help that open enrollment for our health insurance fell during the 2 weeks I am gone.   Well, that’s not good timing.  Grrr.   But as of 6:30 Friday I am on vacation!   Ask me again in 3 days if I am still liking this vacation thing.  πŸ˜›

Monday- Rest  Hmmm, I can’t remember anything particularly special about Monday

Tuesday- Rest  Same as above

img_9891

Wednesday- 3.1 miles  Another night run.   Farthest one yet!   I was bundled up and in reflective gear.  Or at least I hope it was reflective.  It’s not like I stopped a car and asked and I received no helpful cat calls this time.  On the plus side, Christmas lights are going up and every light helps to run to!  Then I went and did some shopping for the Toy Bank and that was nerve wracking.  When did toys get so expensive??  If you follow me on Twitter, you know I was asking for help.   πŸ˜›

Thursday- Rest I’m giving my lungs a chance to adjust to the 4o’s and only running at night once a week and I just couldn’t force myself to go to the gym just yet.

Friday- Last day of work!  Also, my mom’s birthday.  I made poor food choices throughout the day.  Oops.

Saturday- 4.7 miles  Farthest and fastest run in a month!   Which is awesome and kind of sad all at the same time.  I set out in the middle of the afternoon and I quickly realized how over dressed I was.   The plan had been to run to the high school where my mother was having tennis practice then we’d run some errands.    I was hoping to run 5 miles but unfortunately all of my sugary, carby food choices made over the last few days came back to haunt me while I was running across the bridge.   The fact that that was also my fastest mile in well over a month and a half probably didn’t help either.  I spent that last .7 just trying not to be sick.  That put me right at the high school and I figured that was good enough for the day.

Oh, and for the first time in the 30+ years I’ve lived in this town, I went to the Christmas Parade!   We froze- 70 floats?!!- but it was super cute.   The announcers on the other hand- they needed help. They either thought they were funny or were a little deeper in their cups then they should have been.

Sunday- 3 miles  Ooof.    I had a headache in the morning and a dinner plans with the family in the evening so I headed in the early afternoon.   Maybe I should have skipped it.   My Garmin died 1/2 mile in.  My lungs never got on board the run train.    I took a ton of walk breaks.  Near as I can tell, I completed 3 miles around a 13:00 pace.  Say what?   3 miles is 3 miles right?    My legs felt fine, my lungs and head had other plans.  It is what it is, right?  I brushed it off before joining the family for dinner at Olive Garden.  Breadsticks, anyone?

Just barely over double digits for the week, woo hoo!     Food choices on the other hand got a little screwy by the end of the week.   With work having donuts on Thursday, a celebratory lunch on Friday, my mom’s birthday Friday and my dad’s birthday Sunday, I’m feeling a little fluffy and bogged down.   I didn’t even feel like this after Thanksgiving.

How was your week?

Any vacation tips?

Week 46 Un-Training Recap

Training for:

<insert sound of crickets>

Nothing!   I have no scheduled races for the remainder of 2016 right now.  That is so weird!   After the last month of feeling stressed and sick, slightly injured and seriously bitchy, I knew what I was going to do post Golden Gate Half.

I was taking the week off.  I  didn’t even do that post marathon.  Mostly because I had crazy high hopes that marathon training would bring me speedy fall half marathons…which didn’t happen.    Actually I don’t think I’ve taken a solid week off all year long.  Which is odd for this Slacker.

I had plans, I really did.  I was going to get on the bike to keep the legs loose and blood moving.  I was going to try more of my yoga app.   I was thinking about busting out the kettle bell, maybe attempting a plank or 2.    What happened?

Nothing.   Not a damn thing.

Well, I gained 5 pounds but let’s not go there.

see those sad steps?!!πŸ˜‚

I slept… a lot.  Turns out I really wasn’t feeling well.   The week kind of passed in a foggy haze.   I took Monday off as a vacation day to recover from the race and had Friday off due to the holiday.  You’d think all that extra rest would have helped me feel better but no such luck.

Granted part of that fog may be due to drastically cutting back on my caffeine and sugar intake last week.    I also finally had an appointment with a neurologist last week so maybe my daily headaches will be coming to an end?  Fingers crossed?!?!?   The appointment made me laugh though- at one point I had to do the “one foot in front of the other walk” down the hallway and I fell into into the wall.  Ha!

A week off is enough though.  I’m feeling equal parts twitchy and nervous.  That first run back is always so hard.  Combine that with the fact that I know it will be on a treadmill and boo.     I also have that same old shoe conundrum again.  My Hoka’s are ok but not great.  They aggravate a weird soft spot in the bottom of my left foot.   Also, by the end of the Harvest Half, I felt like my toes were bruised and bloody.  They weren’t but they sure felt like it.   I admit that I no longer look forward to shoe shopping.  Now it just stresses me out.  Grrr.

Ever take a week off? Or more?

What did you do?

How was your week?
