May Miles

And just like that, May is moving on.  In one way I am not ready for the year to be halfway over (almost) but I am ready for June.  A new month and a clean slate.  🙂 So without further ado, here’s May-

Races- Bands on the Run 10K

My SmashRun tells me that I ran 12 days and rested on 19.   Hmm, a little uneven.  So May was not my best month but I’ve already alluded to that on numerous posts so let’s just move on.  🙂  FullSizeRender (13)I made it out for 3 runs last week, so I am holding consistent there at least.    Wednesday was a bit sad and I only ran 2.25 miles.  My stomach was a big butt head at the beginning of last week so I got a late start.    I wasted a perfectly good non work day on Monday by not running.  I love running on holidays but I just wasn’t up to it.  Thursday, I got out for a decent 4 miles followed by a .6 mile cool down.  While the pace was decent, it felt hard.   That could have been partly due the temperature warm up we had late this week.  While the mid 70’s felt awesome, it’s been over a month since I ran in those temps.  But I was so glad to warm, I didn’t even mind that it felt hard.   🙂IMG_0562Then Saturday’s run was in the mid 80’s.  It started as a slow run, turned into a jog and then became a walk.   I had planned on doing the usual run/ walk I sometimes do with my mother but 2.5 miles in I was just walking with her.  It was warm and my left leg was feeling off so I decided that walking was just fine.    Truthfully, my left foot and leg have felt a little off since I tried to break in those Inspires.    Hmmm, I am telling myself that it is mostly in my head and just to take it easy.    I still have 2 weeks before I start training for my fall half’s, so this is the best time to figure out what is making it cranky.

I feel like I should have run more on Saturday as I ate way too much movie popcorn that night.   We went and saw San Andreas.  I admit that I have an odd fascination for earthquakes.   One of my favorite subjects in college was Geology and I briefly considered taking it further.    The movie was essentially a Syfy movie but since it had the Rock, it made it to the big screen.   I thought it was pretty good.  My mom and S laughed multiple times throughout it though.   I have to admit it got a little surreal when we decided to walk across the park after the movie to get some frozen yogurt.    Part of downtown was leveled by an earthquake 12 years ago and seeing the new buildings after the leaving the movie brought a lot of that back.  The town suffered heavy damage and loss and it took a long time to rebuild.    It brought reality back into some of the far fetched scenes in the movie.  IMG_0573

I planned on getting in a few miles today but ended up taking a nap instead.  I really got to stop doing that!  🙂   But I did do a bit of unplanned shopping and picked up some new shirts to run in.    I’ve started running in my Lululemon shorts and they are a little more form-fitting than my other stuff.  Apparently I feel the need to compensate with looser shirts.  🙂    Plus, I’ve worn the same shirt just in various colors for the past 2 years, it’s time to branch out.    Just like I decided that saving the Lulu for a special day was kind of silly, they are super comfy.

So, onto June and getting back on track!  I already know I am not running tomorrow but I am doing something running related.  But more on that later.   🙂     Oh and in May I was nominated for the One Lovely Blog Award by MostlyHealthyLiving so that will be my next post.    🙂   Thank you!  You should go check her out!

Lack of Umph

You know that saying about the difference between try and triumph is a little “umph”?  Or something like that?  I’ve lost my umph.  Where did it go?  Can you help me find it?

I’ve been feeling adrift since SLO.  I thought having no training plan would feel liberating.  I mean I am a Slacker after all, I was looking forward to it, thinking it would be awesome.   Yet it hasn’t been.   My last few posts have talked of my lack of motivation and each one said the same thing- I need to get back on track.  Obviously saying it means absolutely nothing.   Want to know how many miles I’ve run in May?   26.   Seriously!??  Ouch.

Ouch
Ouch

Work has officially hit crazy, and my hours got a little longer, like open to close.  Friday is the biggest change, last Friday ran around 11 hours.   However that should be no excuse to be lazy.   Maybe I should just try to go to sleep earlier.   Ok, that one made me laugh a little.   What time did this post go up?   I also need to work on my time management skills outside of work but that’s for another post.    Anyways,  time to hopefully actually follow through with what I say.  So to that effect, I planned out a race schedule.  With a goal race.  So here we go.

May– Bands on the Run 10K
June–  Talley Vineyard 10K
July– Rock’n around the Pier 13.1 and a possible 4th of July 5kAugust– Trail 25K
September– Central Coast Cancer Challenge 10k, HOB Fun Run 10K/ 5K
October– City to the Sea 13.1 (GOAL)
November– Big Sur Half Marathon

A race schedule seemed to work for me before, so let’s try it again.    Since I really think my training plan for SLO worked, I am going to re purpose it for City to the Sea.    That is also where I set my half marathon PR and I love the course…except they changed the course this year, so we will see what happens.   Now, this plan is flexible, life does happen so I may adjust things if I have to.  May, June, HOB and Big Sur are the only ones set right now.

Thank you wind for the crazy hair.
Thank you wind for the crazy hair.

Most of this was thought out after a truly lackluster weekend of running.  I ended up napping on Saturday- again.  Sunday did see my longest run since SLO- a slow 10K.    I ran a 10:52 pace which is great for an easy run which was the goal.  What was not so great was how hard it was.  I was huffing and puffing the whole way, that pace felt more like race pace than easy run.  Ugh.    That was not confidence inspiring, but rough runs happen and we move on.  But I was out there long enough to think of all the reasons I have been lazy and what I can do about it.   I am 20 weeks out from City to the Sea and I am aiming for a 16 week plan.  The next 4 weeks will be testing a couple of new weekly schedules out since this newest one isn’t working out so well.   🙂    Plus I need to figure out what works best with the work schedule.    Running later in the evening makes it harder to sleep and now I have to get up earlier so that probably won’t work, but I will figure it out.    I also need to figure out how to stop the stress eating that has been happening for 2 weeks.

What do you do when you lose your “umph”?

What’s your race schedule look like?

Adios April- Recap

May Day!!!! I am in total denial that tomorrow is May Day.    How does this keep happening?

April, while all over the place, was a pretty dang good month.   So, here we go-

SLO Half Marathon

I wish that my miles were higher but with the dietary changes during the month, I am still pretty happy with that number.     The first couple of weeks were a little rough.   A full post on what changes I made… or was supposed to make will be up this weekend.      I still feel proud of how I handled everything thrown at me during me SLO.   I feel like using an actual training plan and following through 85% of the time gave me the confidence I needed in myself.  The last half of last year kind of kicked my pride and confidence in the gut.  I know I can and will break 2 and when it happens, it happens.    🙂   Plus those hills at SLO didn’t seem very big this year.   🙂

My body seems confused this week.  SLO was my last big race for a while and though it’s only been a few days, I feel a little lost.   I am sure the Slacker in me will kick in sooner or later and embrace the laziness but this week I just wanted to run.    Monday, I was sore from the fall.  My legs felt great after the race but my knees hurt and I suddenly knew how hard I had landed on my right shoulder so I rested.    I had Monday and Tuesday off and I indulged by being lazy.   sadrunOn Tuesday, I set out for a slow recovery jog.  Ha ha!    3.5 miles in 47:51.   It was in the high 80’s and I loved it.  I wore my new Wave Inspires since I am still trying to break them in.  I just can’t, I’ve never met a pair of Mizuno’s that I didn’t like but these are leaning towards hate.    They still feel huge and I can feel the insole on the inside of my right foot.  I’ve tried moving it around but no luck so far.   A coworker described it perfectly- it’s like when you are wearing boots and short socks and your sock keeps slipping down inside the shoe.    I finally just gave up and walked most of it.  I figured I didn’t make it through 4 months of training and 5 races to hurt myself on a short recovery jog.     I am planning on trying the shoes one more time but I am afraid that we may have to break up.   😦IMG_0276

Today’s run was a farce.  My head is in the game but my body is not.   I did one lap of the lake.  One lap.  1.2 miles.  And the Garmin registered it short so it doesn’t even show as that long.   My mother called part way through the lap asking if I wanted to meet her and a tennis player at Chipotle.  It didn’t take too much convincing.  So, that brought me to 79.3 miles for the month.  Yes, a tiny part of me considered running up and down my driveway to hit 80 but I didn’t.

On to May.   I have decided to pass on one of the 10k’s but I would like to up my training.   I want to bring my base mileage up so that I when I start training for fall races, I feel stronger.    Also with temps hitting the 90’s again, I would like to transition to running 3x a week after work and a long run on the weekends.   That would mean a little less heat and sun exposure, plus an entire weekend day off.    That sounds kind of nice.   🙂   Or who knows, this could be the start of me transitioning to running 5x a week.   Ok, let’s not get that crazy yet… I’m still a Slacker.    I also want to get back out on the trails, I miss them.    I should also add cross training.   Or at least try.

Oh and I finally figured out what to do with my medals!! –IMG_0272Non running goals for May are a little up in the air.    I would like to read more, and hang out with friends.   There are some movie nights coming up too.  I need to focus on the diet a little more as well.  And I really need to start that project for the craft swap I signed up for.  Oops!!   Running may also turn into stress relief because work is about get insane for a month or two.

How was your April?  Goals/ plans for May?

Anyone racing this weekend?

Ever been unable to break in a pair of shoes?  Any suggestions?

Happy Friday!!!

Testing the Waters

After a great hike on Saturday, I was ready for a long run.  Or I was cautiously optimistic for one.  My training plan called for 12-14 miles but I knew that was highly unlikely.   I was eager but also lazy.  🙂   I was aiming for 8-10.  This was my test run.  If I felt good throughout the run and after I was registering for Wine Country.  Which is now 4 days away.

As much as I love daylight savings time and was looking forward to it, there was no way that I was running in the morning.   I was looking forward to sleeping in.  Besides my favorite time to run is the afternoon, so why change?  Ha!   I set out around 2:30 for my run.    What I forgot to take into account was the unseasonably warm weather we have been having.  High 70’s- low 80’s when I set out.    This actually sounds like my perfect running weather, and it is, when I am used to it.    I’m just not there yet.  🙂IMG_9458I kept it slow and easy and felt pretty good.     Because I am a sucker for punishment, I did my usual hill repeats.   Why am I not better at hills?  Actually I know that part of my problem is the downhills.  I tend to slow down when running down a street.  Which is odd because I practically throw myself down trails where there is more chance to hurt myself.   🙂  That’s a little backwards.   I need to work on keeping my pace more consistent on downhills.  FullSizeRender (4)It was warm so I was actually managing to keep my pace just under 11:00 for once.  I have a route that if I loop twice is 10 miles but then I would have to run past my driveway halfway through.  I always end up doing little loops instead and end up shorting myself mileage.  Which drives me crazy because in theory I am covering the same ground just in a different way.  Ugh.   I had just completed mile 8 and was trying to figure out where I went wrong again when my phone went off.  Texts from my brother and mother, they wanted to do family dinner…soon.  I was still a mile from home plus I needed to try and make myself look (and smell) presentable and that was only if I gave up on 10 miles.  I’d kept walking while trying to figure out the plans so that added to getting back home brought me to 9.25 miles for the day.   Not what I was aiming for but pretty good.   Once cleaned up, I proceeded to eat way too many chips and salsa at dinner with my family.  Oops!

It was hot but I got to test put my new skirt!! Too bad I suck at selfies, haha!

I felt pretty good after my run.  I was achy but not in any unusual ways.  Sitting through dinner in a small booth so soon after running didn’t make it any worse.   I had stretched briefly before leaving for dinner so I made sure to stretch really well later as well.   I rolled a bit but not too much, I’ve learned my muscles get real cranky if I try to push it with the roller.   Also is it any wonder I ache some when the roads I run look this-

And this is a hill
And this is a hill

Do you slow down or speed up when running downhills?

What do your roads look like?

What’s your weakness- chips and salsa or a breadbasket?

Slow and Easy

While Saturday’s easy run had gone fairly well I was still nervous about my long run.  How were my legs going to handle it?   I knew the planned progression wasn’t going to happen but I was hoping to run long-ish and easy.

An old friend was coming to town for the weekend and we had been messaging about running together.  We have tried this before but never made it work.    We always seem to miss each other.  She ran SLO the year before I did, I ran City to the Sea the year before she did.   We did run into each other at my first Super Fun Run but she was running the 10k and I was running the 5K.   She’s running Wine Country next weekend and was aiming for 8-11 miles.   I said I would be slow but hang on if that was ok with her.  coldrunSeriously, there’s a reason I don’t run in the mornings.  It’s freakin’ cold!!   Yes, I realize that high 30’s, low 40’s is a heat wave to everyone outside of California.  Again let me state that I am a big baby in the cold!  For a variety of reasons we both had rough nights and there were more messages going back and forth on Sunday morning.   🙂  But we stuck it out and met up to run.   I planned the route and figured that my habit of running in circles up hills probably wouldn’t be the best idea.  So I mapped out a very lopsided figure 8 that led us across town and back for a little over 8 miles.  If we were feeling good I had ways to add on miles.    IMG_9458I was stiff and had to take numerous walking breaks.  My stomach has also been an asshat since Saturday night so that slowed me down as well.  I felt so bad for slowing her down.    Other than those 2 things I felt pretty good though which was cool considering how much I had not wanted to get out of bed.   If I am thinking optimistically then it’s not all my fault that we were slower than hoped for.  I live in a small town, proven by the fact that an 8 mile route can take me across town and back.  However, within that route we had 8 traffic light stops.  8.    That said, I wouldn’t mind running that route again.

We finished our run and chatted for a bit before heading our separate ways.   It was nice running with someone.  I so very rarely do that.  It does a little more energy to talk and run at the sametime- it should count as crosstraining- ha!   Maybe we can try that the next time she is in town.   Also, I would not have run in the morning had I not been meeting her.  I am so not a morning person.  I don’t think I ever will be.  Races are my extent of early mornings.

Running before made this seem a little less indulgent.
Running before made this seem a little less indulgent.

I am still on the fence about Wine Country.  I actually felt ok after Sunday’s run.   I stretched really well and rolled a little.    It’s probably just me using it wrong but my roller has not been helping.    I have a feeling I am going to put off the decision-making as long as possible.  On a random note- my Garmin shows 2 different average paces for the same run?!
